Its not THAT bad. The reflections are a bit annoying but it's most definitely not un-flyable.

Just looking at this now, seems very subtle to me.

Are you testing in VR? Any static reflections look awful in VR.

Is something Id really like to see for every module in DCS, the option to choose clean reflection free canopy , just as we can choose different language cockpits etc. As already mentioned, any fake reflection is annoying in VR. In VR we sense depth, and the fake reflections dont have any depth, so its just this pixelated surface in 'space'. Goes for dial surfaces too for that matter.

- Jack of many DCS modules, master of none.

- Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS.

That pic is in no way indicative of what we see. Also the position and time of day can make even reflections in 2d terrible. And in VR, it is a whole different ballgame.

It doesn't clearly refute anything, my personal opinion is they are strong but not unrealistic. I only wish the image was smooth. While moving, it rarely causes a problem, and when it does, I am not so sure that is unreasonable to think it happens in the real thing. I am asking a pilot his opinion and will go from there.

I'm also not a fan of it. No it doesn't make it unflyable but to suggest it looks realistic... at all.... in the slightest.... is unrealistic.

It's also very low resolution which makes it even more terrible. It's the only issue i have with this module, it's very very nice except when this reflection pop up and distract you from your target as it's soooo bad.

Scratches would be so much better...

The only thing I will report is how low-res and chunky the reflections look, the amount they show has been confirmed realistic by Mr Grey, he has plenty of experience in this type of cockpit. In fact, he stated that in some cases other modules are underdone. I asked him of course because my cockpit is generally a Ford Edge, but even then you can see some pretty good examples of reflections with different light conditions.

Pictures are great, but generally dont show the whole story, while you are moving and flying, the amount changes, and is blocked by shadows and such.

The problem with the current Mig-15 reflections isn't that they're a bit blocky - it's because they look exactly like textures painted on the canopy.

I'm sure Nick Grey is right about how intrusive reflections can be - but until we can model reflections properly in 3D with parallax and all that good stuff we're stuck with textures painted to the canopy. And the more intrusive you make them the more terribly obvious it becomes that you're looking at a texture stuck to the canopy. So you have to dial them back a bit.

In terms of intrusiveness the reflections in 1.5.x might have been underdone but at least they didn't scream 'TEXTURE' at you.

I agree in VR they are extremely immersion breaking because when they do show, they are:

1) Static.

2) Extremely low res

These two combined make them very fake.

While moving, it rarely causes a problem, and when it does, I am not so sure that is unreasonable to think it happens in the real thing. I am asking a pilot his opinion and will go from there.

Pilot's opinion (but definitely not on this bird or anything close): when you fly in a real aircraft, your vision is focused on infinity, and those reflections tend to be discarded because they are much closer and thus become blurry. In the simulation they are on the same screen, the eyes are focusing on them as well as what is behind the canopy, and so they are obfuscating the view to a greater extent in the sim than in reality. It doesn't look as if that had been taken into account (some games have that feature but I doubt it would be easy or even desirable in DCS).

It is possible to roll the aircraft a bit if they become really annoying, such as when you have the sun directly behind. It's possible to move one's head also, but not on those models since those pilots are fastened quite securely to their seat, and the cockpit offers little room to move.

In the sim, it is still possible to roll the aircraft, but the position of the head has not been taken into account, those images are static. So moving slightly the head has less effect than in the real cockpit, there the curvature of the canopy makes the reflection move around differently (hard to explain in a few words but look at a curved mirror and you'll see the effect). This difference makes the reflection more obstructive in the simulation, sometimes.

The combination of this and the previous limitation makes them look as stains, not reflections, which is distracting.

I haven't tried during the night. At that time, in a real cockpit, it is very annoying, I suspect this becomes the opposite in the sim? On the other hand, the fact the reflections are not taking the head's position would become even more noticeable and break the realism further.
