Oooh clusterbombs sound fun! I'm looking foreward to using the P47 for ground attack and more options for what to drop on people can only make it better!

I don't think the 5" HVARs were used by European based P-47s; no doubt I'll be corrected on this.

I'm not sure if the 5" HVAR's were theater based or not... But I don't think the P-47's got them until the Block -40 model. I think it was just the -40 and all the P-47N's that had the rocket stubs added. All the previous models used the 3 bazooka tube type rockets.

Good one! Any pics with wrecked engine, especially the cylinder section shot? I've heard it mentioned many times but never actually seen any evidence of a P-47 surviving a cylinder actually being shot at.

I've read about a cylinder being shot out leaving a piston flopping around in several books, as well as hearing pilots give first hand accounts in a couple documentaries.

I did a search and couldn't find a specific picture that demonstrated this damage.... But it would look like the above picture... oil leaking out of one of the broken top cylinders.... Enough oil would stay in the bottom part of the engine to keep the motor from seizing. If a bottom cylinder was shot out I'd imagine the oil would all drain out and the motor would seize.

So he had to stick his head out the window to land this right. Did this involve some form of standing while landing? No way could he see anything out that cockpit window.

I imagine he flew off his wingman/leads wing while they talked him down and he scanned his gauges.

It depends on the oil system. I'm not an engine-er but AFAIK only some form of 'splashing' oil lubrication would prevent oil from leaking out of the engine for good. Any sort of an oil pressurized nozzle looking towards or located in the lost cylinder and you're done.

Any Idea about the time frame the P-47 will be available to kickstarter and purchase? Thanks TC

It's un-officially slated for March 2015..... But I imagine that date will slip a few times before then.

Don't know if this has been posted yet but it was new to me when I saw it. The video goes over operation and a little bit of the construction of the P-47. Loved the ground loop on the runway later on =P

Cool video. I can't wait for the awesome 47. But as a ground school and flight instructor myself, those teaching techniques are hard to listen to. The instructor was jumping all over the place.

I think you're right.... I think the roll rate was surprising for how big the P-47 was... So it's more reletive.... But while searching I did find this document from when the RAF was testing an early model P-47:

It basically says the P-47's roll rate was:

 

Comparable if not better than the Spit MK IX above 30k feet of altitude... Though the Spit had the edge down low.

 

Far superior than the Typhoon IB

 

Considerably better than the Mustang X

 

The P-38F doesn't really go into roll rates... But the P-38F out maneuvered the P-47C.

 

It's a pretty interesting read!

If P-47 had comparable roll to Spitfire it was deffinitely worse than a P-51B or D. Mustang X is not representative of the P-51 serries. At low speed Spitifire is realy good, but the faster it goes the curve is droping rapidly. Speed is realy a factor here.

Above 370kph the P-51B is still getting better while P-47C starts to drop. Although, one must admire the curve for Fw190 :P

One would hope. But with the current engine it will be darn near impossible to spot a enemy below you at useful distances IE: as significant altitude advantage. Hopefully Edge helps alot with this. ED has now admitted the DMG model has issues, and hopefully it fixed soon, because the combination of poor visibility and weak guns will make BnZ next to useless.
