Beware the new Windows update.

Recommended Posts

Turned on the PC and it said Windows wanted to update and it will take some time, don't switch off yada yada.

PC finished updating and all the ED/DCS folders and shortcuts had vanished. Repair, update;everything. Nothing in file explorer. Even Oculus could not find it.

Thankfully I learned my lesson and bought a backup drive to store a system image on a few weeks ago, or I would be looking at downloading everything again all week.

Microsoft screws up again. Every flipping time.

Update at your peril if you don't have a recent backup.

Edit. Restored to previous build and all the files have reappeared....

No idea why. :noexpression:

can you specify what you updated/upgraded ?

This, what you mentioned, if I understand correctly, came with 1809 when it got first released, then pulled to fix that,...took many many weeks, and should be fixed.

Did you update to 1809 that day ??

edit: are you using MS One Drive ? that was involved for most installs affected iirc

As far as I was aware, my PC was up to date with all windows updates, it seems to do it on a weekly basis.

This update downloaded itself last weekend and prompted me to install it or press "later". I pressed later.

I do not use the PC during the working week for the sake of my marriage, so when I fired it up yesterday it automatically started installing the update.

It was a big one that took some time and restarted my PC several times. It started with a screen showcasing several new features that I ignored, because my immediate task was to update DCS.

I'm afraid when looking for the DCS World updater and main folder in the start menu it was gone, as was the DCS shortcut on the desktop.

Could not find in in file explorer either.

At that point, the thing was gone. I was not having whatever it was on my PC.

sorry, no idea of build number ect and not using one drive.

I also have big problems with update 1809

Windows sees the update, it downloads it and installs it.

It tells me to restart and finishes the installation of 1809

But it still says I have version 1803 then it searches for updates again, it sees update 1809 available and it tries to install again.

It goes on and on.....in some kind of loop.

Anybody experienced something similar?

Any suggestion?

I'm thinking about formatting.

I have a dedicated M2 SSD for DCS, would I be able to just use my current DCS after formatting my operating system SSD or would I need to format also DCS ssd and re-download DCS from the beginning?

Maybe you need to make a USB stick and install it OVER your existing one, wiping the old one.

Not nice, but that is MS.

BTW, type "winver" in the search box, it tells you all your Windows version numbers etc..

Thanks for trying to help guys

My windows version number is 1803

The pc it's stuck in a loop

tries to update, fails, tries again forever

I contacted MS support, they spent all the morning doing stuff and at the end the answer was..

Don't know why it does that, we are unable to fix it but I can hide the update on your computer so it doesn't download it continously.

I'm not satisfied with that so the bootable usb stick with the iso file is ready.

I'm ready to kill it and make it reborn

for 1809...I am on my 3rd install

check the mobo drivers for sound lan usb etc... mine ( asus from sig ) said 1809 needed a full clean driver install as 1809 changed significantly. Better install the latest drivers right away

You say “beware”, but what can be done to prevent it from occuring? My home edition will force feed updates down my throat no matter what. My next install ill upgrade to pro just to stop this update insanity.

Personally, I have no issues with 1809, and most manufacturer's latest drivers and bios coincide with windows build 1809.

You want to be on the latest version, if it's not working right for you something else is going on.

The only exception to this, really, might be older hardware that is no longer receiving ongoing driver support. As windows 10 builds seem to require hardware manufacturer's to keep up.

My windows updated recently,

I was left without internet as my onboard network would not work, tried new drivers, old drivers nothing worked.

Installed PCI network card, onboard network started working again, really strange.

But since then no issues.

I did this, found it exactly as described. I finally snapped after Windows update for some reason broke all my DCS keybindings via resetting device IDs or something. Right about the time I made that thread about device bindings, in fact @@

Sadly, this only postpones the problems. Eventually we have to bite the bitter fruit.

I learned my lesson and clone my C drive (M.2 NVMe 1 TB) and D drive 1 TB SSD to two HD's after updates once things stabilized. The trouble with Microsoft is a fix can take a month or more as we found in the 1903 mishap.
