KA-50 Missle defense.

With the KA50 getting the new missiles defense system, appears to be the President-S (just a guess).. Is that something we can hope for in the future for the MI8?

Yes? The Mi-8 does have lots of different weapons to carry, not limited to cannon pods or rockets.

ATGM has been from start one of the requirement for many of them.

Missiles like 9M17 and 9M17P.

That is something what I wonder why doesn't Mi-8MTv2 have any ATGM usable, while previous Mi-8 variants has had it and after it too?

I believe they were fairly specialised variants...? In any case it requires quite a bit of new avionics and the Mi-8 wasn't as profitable as hoped (in spite of some of us valuing it more than jet fighters - we're a minority)!

They were defined but limited, especially compared if there is over 12000 Mi-8's produced around the world. The Russian army liked their helicopters to be multiversal.

Lots of field modifications and some got to serial productions. There are so many variants that it is hard to keep up what is what.

The Mi-8T likely was the first serial production variant with ATGM capability. But thinking that you would be firing a MCLOS Malyutka missile from the cockpit....

Or in 1997 the Mi-8AMTSh was revealed, same armament as the Mi-24 had, Ataka-V etc.

The latest one is more of a Mi-24 in the cargo transport version, armored cockpit, all sensors etc, hardpoints etc and still the same Mi-8 by fuselage.

Even our Mi-8MTV-2 is fairly special unit. And IIRC the current one is on #5 version or maybe #6, so a lot of has been changed since then.

The Mi-8 is just one of those that you can order in any configuration you really want, and customer gets what they want. So you will have hundreds of special kinds all over places.

Too hard to model probably.

Yeah, I remember pictures of field mods with AGS-17 firing from the door, or PK machine guns tied to the gear struts! There are so many variants, retrofits, and so much history around this plane it can be hard to make sense of.

It could probably be possible. I believe the newsletter mentioned though that the team that is working on the Hind is the team behind the MI-8, so they are probably a bit too busy to implement new stuff for the MI-8 at the moment. :P

I'm happy to see the upgrade of MI-8, whether it's adding missiles or improving avionics, or even becoming MI-17.

The Mi-17 is nothing more than the export variant of the MT. Thats basically an MTV2 with less powerful engines.

The Mi-17 is nothing more than the export variant of the MT. Thats basically an MTV2 with less powerful engines.

Mi-17 can be equipped with TV3-117VM engines (the same the MTV2 uses)

The Mi-17 is the export version of the Mi-8MT, equipped with TV3-117MT engines. In fact, they are the only Mi-17/Mi-8 versions with the MT engines.

The Mi-17-1V is the export version of the Mi-8MTV-1, equipped with TV3-117VM engines, as are all later versions of the Mi-17 and Mi-8. (Well, except those with the newer engines such as the VK-2500 but those are still pretty rare.)

The Mi-8MTV-2 and Mi-8MTV-3 were internal Russian versions and have no direct Mi-17 counterpart.

The Mi-17V-5 is the export version of the Mi-8MTV-5.

From Ulan-Ude, we have the Mi-171 (export version of Mi-8AMT) and the Mi-171Sh (export version of the Mi-8AMTSh). Like the Mi-8MTV-1 and later, this series of helicopters also has the TV3-117VM engines.

There are, of course, a few I'm leaving out, but there is a dizzying array of variants, as has been mentioned before.

:D (sadly the S-24 doesn't seem to work)

Before anything, I'd rather have the bombing sight device. I know Belsimtek said they'll not do it, but that was Belsimtek and years ago. Now it's all ED, so who knows.

Not saying no to the ATGM's of which I'm aware too, nor to the Igla's.
