Your 1080ti has fewer CUDA cores, it's missing Tensor cores, and it has horrible ray-tracing performance. In 12 months your Pascal will be about 3.5 years old as far as GPU technology, and there won't be a 3080 in 12 months, so you'll be waiting another 18 months to get the next gen.

 

So you'll be running a 5 year old GPU, waiting for the next gen, and trying to justify your Pascal purchase? Good luck with that. :doh:

If you bought a 1080ti in July 2018, you got about a month of having the latest tech. If you buy the 2080ti on day 1, you get 2.5 years of latest tech. If you buy a 2080ti in 2.5 years, you have latest tech for 1 month. Ad nauseum.

I will wait and see some REAL benchmarks in DCS, that's all I'm mainly interested in anyway, if DCS is good the driving sims I use will be very good. I want a good experience in DCS and will pay and lose money to have that, it's part of the cost of this hobby. I'm still pushing DCS quite high now and still running an older 7700K with a 1080ti. Vulkan should help allow larger missions and if I can hold good 50/60+ fps on high graphics settings I'm very happy.

The only reason I would upgrade now, is when the ASUS etc 2080ti's are out and they can hold 90 fps all the time in the rift or if the new rift 2 was out and I needed more power to run it in DCS.

I would certainly not consider 1080 Ti today ancient technology.

 

Yeah I am excited and plan on getting a 2080 Ti here soon, but my 1080 Ti in the meantime is serving me well.

VR is quite demanding, and will remain so for the near future.

No money tree however, have been saving up for a complete new build all year - had some extra so will put towards this.

You'd think that they would have upped the VRAM to maybe 14GB (or more) by now...

No competition from AMD does this, the same way Intel kept pushing quad cores as their flagships for 12 years until AMD released Ryzen.

Well ok...Now let's look at this from an adult point of view. In the real world adults have many many obligations to worry about that are far more important than wether or not their video card is "Ancient". The people who couldn't afford 750.00 for a 1080TI Friday can't suddenly afford a 999.00 2080ti today. However, they might be able to squeeze out 450.00 for 1080 now that prices dropping. Personally I know a several people who will be more than happy to use what you dismiss as "ancient tech" because it will be a giant step up from what they are currently using. Check Amazon...prices are already coming down less than 24 hours after the announcement.

Dismissing what was cutting edge on Friday as ancient tech on Tuesday is arrogant.

In short...tech will always be evolving. Buy what you can afford and be happy with your purchase.

1.) the keynote took place in Germany. Not sure what he was inferring about it happening at 2AM his time.

It claims the 2080 Ti will be superior to the Titan V. As someone that has a regular 1080 and uses 4k and VR, would this not be a decent step up for me?

Usually when you see titles like that (and Nvidia saying the 2080 will be 10x as power as 1080ti) they are talking in VERY specific circumstances.

Basically... I will just repeat what others have said, wait for benchmarks to come out.

I think the biggest thing it comes down to is last week I was mulling over the fact I have 2 kidneys and no 1080TI...

THIS week...the price for a 1080TI has fallen to the point I can keep all of my internal organs AND have a smoking fast video card...but that is assuming the 2070 is hype...which the jury is out on.

Exactly, today I see 1080 ti going for $450. Im also curious about the 2070 vs 1080 ti. I may jump in one of the wagons for an upgrade, just waiting on benchmarks to choose which.

Good old USA - here in Europe the cheapest price for a 1080ti I see is 711 EUR incl. VAT.

Looks like the 2080ti is 30-50% faster than the 1080ti. That's all you need to realize how much more advanced Turing is compared to Pascal.
