imacken
I have posted about issues I have regarding maps not showing data in metres when it should be feet elsewhere, but I have a more general question on elevation data that I have observed. I have attached the results of inputting the QNH and QFE given in Briefing Notes for various scenarios and compared them to the map elevation data. Now, from what I can see, the QNH and map correspond reasonably well, but the QFE? My understanding is that adjusting the altimeter pressure to the QFE should show 0 altitude when sitting on the runway. If that is correct, then what is the explanation for this data? lemoen
So, QNH gives the altitude above mean sea level (when working out altitude from air pressure). QFE is the air pressure at the level of the runway or airfield or some other point on the ground. So you set your altimeter to that. These values are only valid if you stay close to the place where the pressure was known, air pressure changes with temperature, winds, weather etc. In your case, QNH and F10 map should be approximately equal, like you're seeing. imacken
Thanks but that is not what I was trying to understand. The QNH values look fine as they agree pretty much with the map values. It is the QFE that I don't get. These are taken sittting on the runways in question, and in my limited knowledge base, should show zero altitude. But they don't! That is what I don't understand. JG14_Smil
I have a better explanation yet... It's bugged. Different planes give different altitude values, even if the standard *should* be the same. F10 values don't match altimeters either. I detest QFE, but I believe it is needed to place objects in DCS at ground level. Setting a gauge to a variable and not a baseline defies logic. imacken
If this is a bug, then it's pretty serious! If my figures are right, then the QFEs are out by up to 1500 feet! How could objects be placed in DCS on the ground with that kind of data? Ramsay
My understanding is that adjusting the altimeter pressure to the QFE should show 0 altitude when sitting on the runway. If that is correct, then what is the explanation for this data? There was a post that suggested that QFE simulation assumes standard ISA temperature (15°C). However, in game ATC and weather briefings report the QFE taking temperature into account - so the two values differ. I haven't tested the report to see if it is true or applies to all modules. i9 9900K @4.7GHz, 64GB DDR4, RTX4070 12GB, 1+2TB NVMe, 6+4TB HD, 4+1TB SSD, Winwing Orion 2 F-15EX Throttle + F-16EX Stick, TPR Pedals, TIR5, Win 10 Pro x64, 1920X1080
imacken
I really don't get this. Surely if the briefing gives a QFE, then sitting on that runway should show 0 altitude at that pressure. I mean, if the info from ATC in flight is impossible to interpret, then what is the point of it? 98abaile
So QFE at any runway should always give an altimeter reading of 0? In that case I'm pretty sure it's bugged, since whenever tower tells me the QFE and I input it, my altimeter doesn't read 0.
imacken
Do ED read these posts and comment? If not, I might raise a support case and ask about this. ED Team BIGNEWY Posted April 19, 2017 ED Team Share Posted April 19, 2017 (edited) I am still looking into this, but from what I have found out the information for the briefing including the weather is taken from the mission file. If the weather is dynamic in the mission the value's can be slightly off, static weather should give better results. Edited April 19, 2017 by BIGNEWY Forum rules - DCS Crashing?
