“These are very biased news and in fact they are wrong.

 

For starters, only the first submarine has a floatability problem. The other submarines in the series are larger, therefore they have no problem.

 

Now, why has the fist submarine (the original design) a floatability problem? Because the Navy asked for more equipment (electronic equipment, weapons, etc) and more comfortable cabins for the sailors than originally planned.

 

It is not a design problem but a modifications problem and this is very very very frequent in large projects, especially if military.

 

The changes have been taken into account in the design for the second and subsequent submarines (S81, S82, etc). The first submarine (S80) will be fixed by making it a bit longer and adding some floating aids.

ARLINGTON, Va. --- ATK and Alenia Aermacchi successfully completed the first phase of ground and flight tests of their MC-27J multi-mission aircraft. A Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) Gun System pallet was installed and tested on the Alenia Aermacchi C-27J Spartan airlifter. The series of tests were conducted by ATK and Alenia personnel at Eglin Air Force base in Florida. The test events were designed and certified by the U.S. Air Force and deemed successful by Air Force Special Operations Command.

 

The series of ground and flight tests demonstrated the ability of the C-27J to host the self-contained, modular pallet utilizing ATK’s proven GAU-23 30mm cannon in a side-firing configuration. Live-fire tests and a timed demonstration of the ability to quickly go from a cargo configuration to a weaponized configuration of the aircraft exceeded all test objectives.

 

“The performance and functionality of the gunship pallet in this first round of testing met all of our objectives, and we are now ready to move on to Phase 2 of development and testing,” said Bill Kasting, vice president and general manager for ATK Defense Electronic Systems. “Our modular Roll-on/Roll-off mission and weapon systems, coupled with the proven capability of the C-27J, provide customers with an adaptable, agile and affordable multi-mission solution.”

 

"The introduction of the ATK palletized system is a perfect fit for the C-27J,” said Ben Stone, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alenia Aermacchi North America. “It combines the aircraft’s inherent mission capability with ATK’s proven ability to develop cost-effective integration solutions. We are excited to continue Phase 2 of the test program to provide our worldwide customers true multi-mission options for the already combat-proven C-27J Spartan.”

 

ATK and Alenia Aermacchi announced their intent to jointly develop and market the MC-27J multi-mission aircraft using a phased approach at the Farnborough Air Show last year. The MC-27J will provide customers with the ability to quickly transition from a tactical cargo mission to a persistent multi-mission capability utilizing RORO pallets for the integrated mission system consoles, GAU-23 cannon, Precision Guided Munition weapon systems and enabling C2/ISR architectures. The next phase will further advance the Technology Readiness Level of this game-changing product.

MBDA’s combat proven, UK developed, Brimstone missile carried out the world’s first surface to surface salvo engagement of multiple Fast In-shore Attack Craft (FIAC) threats with a single button push. The success of the trial has shown Brimstone’s unrivalled ability to swiftly strike numerous individual vessels without the need to laboriously designate each target, thereby demonstrating its prowess as a fire and forget maritime surface attack weapon.

 

On the 29th May 2013, three millimetric wave operational Brimstone missiles were launched in a rapid salvo of less than a second against a simulated attack formation of five representative FIACs. The three missiles independently acquired and engaged their respective targets at a distance between 4km and 5km (constrained by range safety); direct hits resulted in extensive structural damage to the three leading vessels, including one travelling at around 20 knots. The missiles were launched from a surface trials platform using a Brimstone triple rail launcher in conditions of sea state 3.

 

This exceptional achievement follows on from a previously undisclosed, successful surface launch trial against a single static FIAC on the 6th April 2013. Instead of a warhead the missile carried a telemetry unit to transmit trials data. The missile acquired and identified the target with a subsequent direct hit on the vessel’s control cabin, with the missile passing through the hull at the rear of the craft causing the target to sink.

 

The Brimstone programme is run by MBDA UK’s team in Stevenage, Hertfordshire while both of these trials were carried out off the west coast of Scotland with range support provided by QinetiQ.

 

Brimstone is being proposed by MBDA UK as a surface attack missile for deployment within the Sea Spear system against FIACs and other small surface threats in all weather environments. As an effective maritime Force Protection capability, it rapidly provides significant utility beyond the range of medium calibre naval gun systems. With a range of deck-mounted launcher options, from single to six-pack configurations, the system’s very small footprint gives it a high level of deck positioning flexibility making it suitable for small vessels such Fast Attack Craft as well as much larger vessels such as auxiliary ships.

Rosoboronexport, Russia was awarded a $572,180,894 firm-fixed-price contract modification for 30 Mi-17 helicopters, spare parts, test equipment and engineering support services.

 

The Mi-17 military helicopters will be used by the Afghan National Security Forces Special Mission Wing, an aviation unit that supports counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics and special operations missions.

 

Work will be performed in Russia and is expected to be complete by Dec. 31, 2014. This contract involves foreign military sales. FY12 funds in the amount of $572,180,894 are being obligated at time of award.

 

Army contracting command Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala. is the contracting activity (W58RGZ11-C-0072/P0006).

Russia has for the first time demonstrated the short-to-mid-range air defense platform ‘Vityaz,’ which will replace older variants of the S-300 system due to be scrapped soon. The army will begin testing the new hardware later this year.

 

The new surface-to-air missile system is made by Russian weapons manufacturer Almaz-Antey. The company demonstrated the system at the Obukhov State Plant in St. Petersburg, home to its branch that manufactures the Vityaz launchers.

The system boasts advanced all-aspect phased array radar, a new mobile command post and a launcher carrying 12 vertical-launch missiles, which will use a variant of the 9M96 active radar homing missile. Similar missiles are used by the S-400, the newer generation of the S-300, which is currently being deployed in Russia.

 

Vityaz launchers can also fire a short-range missile that was not officially identified, but is likely a variant of the 9M100.

 

“I believe the system will be able to engage target within ranges from 30km to 120km,” Said Aminov, military analyst and editor of the World of Air Defense website told RT. “It’s a system of object air defense with some element of tactical antimissile defense.”

 

Almaz-Antey aims to hand over the system to the Russian Defense Ministry for testing before the year’s end, company head Vladislav Menshikov told Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was inspecting the plant.

 

The company partially based the design of the Vityaz on its work with the South Korean KM-SAM Chun Koong system. Almaz-Antey designed three radar units for the KM-SAM, and is rumored to have also helped design the system’s missiles.

 

The Russian military officially backed the Vityaz project – which has better capabilities than the Korean air defense system – after studying its performance, Almaz-Antey said in 2010. The new Russian system has been in the works since 2007, and is expected to be completed in record time.

 

The ministry earlier said it plans to buy at least 30 Vityaz systems before 2020, if it passes testing, and deployment of the platforms could start as early as next year.

Vityaz was designed as a replacement for the S-300PS, an older variant of the S-300 air defense system developed in the early 1980s. The Russian army is expected to decommission about 50 of the S-300PS by 2015 due to old age.

 

The name of the system comes from an archaic Slavic word for a noble warrior. It is shared by the famous aerobatic team known as the Russkie Vityazi (‘Russian Knights’).

 

Russia plans to deploy the Vityaz system alongside other advanced air defense weapons, including the service-ready S-400 and Pantsir-S1, and the future long-range S-500 and short-range Morfei. Moscow aims to create a multi-layered grid to cover Russia’s airspace, defending against threats ranging from drones, to conventional manned aircraft, to cruise and ballistic missiles.
