Upgrade: 1070 or 1080?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

In a previous thread, I identified that I had to increase my RAM to 16 Gb and change my graphic card.

RAM increase is now done and my current config is:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 4670K OC@4.3 Ghz
  • Processor Cores: 4
  • Processor Speed: 3.4 Ghz
  • RAM: 16 Gb DDR3
  • Video Board Manufacturer :NVIDIA
  • Video Board Model: GeForce GTX 770
  • Video Memory: 2 Gb
  • Mother Board: MSI Z87-G43 Gaming
  • Cooler: Master Hyper 212 EVO
  • Hard Drives: SATA 3 (2 Tb) + SSD (256 Gb)
  • Power: Antec HCG 620 Watts 80+ Bronze

Next month I plan to buy a 2560 x 1440, TN, 144 Hz GSync, 27" monitor.

I now need to make a decision regarding the graphic card. I have made this short list:

  • MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G: 599,90€ on Amazon.fr
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080: 599,90€ on Nvidia store
  • MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming 8G: 475,87€ on Amazon.fr
  • MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Aero OC - 8 Go: 439,90€ on Materiel.net
  • Nvidia GTX 1070:429,00€ on Nvidia store

This is my first and last upgrade on this PC. I want to last 3-4 years and the next time I will buy a new PC.

Advices are most welcome but please don't tell me to buy a 1080Ti (not on budget).

I am wondering if my motherboard and cpu will be able to follow?

Even if they cannot follow 100%, the graphic card will work anyway?

If it happens that Nvidia releases a 1070Ti ;) Apparently it is taking shape if Gygabyte hints to it.

I'd grab the 1080Ti if I had to buy now and wanted it to last 3-4 years with 2k QHD resolution.

In Nevada I am anywhere between 50 ish over Vegas and up to 143 fps in the less dense areas. My GPU is always at full load in NTTR and my settings are all high/extreme but shadows are low and deferred shadows is ON. The fps are mainly the same with DS off and 16x AF and 2x MSAA.

To get away from the 50-60 fps over vegas to more thrilling 80-100 you need twice the power of a 980GTX roughly, the 1070 is only like 20-30% faster I guess, the 1080 40-50% and the Ti another 30% up to 70-80% faster in my assumption.

But the Ti's hefty price tag I am not willing to pay as long as my 980 is still fluent ( thanks to Gsync ). Normandie I assume is more taxing than NTTR for the GPU, butI cant tell as I dont have it.

Thanks Toxic and BitMaster, for your return on experience.

Much appreciated.

I don't have the budget for a 1080Ti, so I think I'll go with a 1080 which is already very good I believe. The goal is to handle 2K with Ultra settings in games and DCS and to last as much as possible until the next whole PC change.

You can get a 1080 already for 500€.

I bought a 1070 for 400€ several months ago, when a 1080 still cost over 600€ but now I would prefer a 1080. Especially if you want to play on 1440p.

And I dont think its necessary to pay 100€ more for a OC-version with better cooling system. The 10XX cards dont produce much heat and you can overclock on your own.

Edit: I forgot something. Avoid radial cooling systems! These are less effective and loud in most cases.

  • 4 weeks later...

Same thing here. I'll slowly start to upgrade my rig and will start with GPU.

1070 TI is no option? Should I swallow it and get a 1080 right away? If so, is there a particular model to recommend?

Ultimate goal is to dig into Oculus and VR in the long run.

Thx in advance,

Dennis

I was upgrading recently, and decided to go with 1070. Here is the logic:

- 1080 is not enough to milk most out of DCS when using VR;

- at the same time 1080 is too pricey for now;

- 1070 is damn cheap, and gives enough to make DCS+VR playable.

- Spend less, and save money for a better card that will replace 1080ti.

To all who participated to this thread: again thank you :) Finally I bought a MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G for 569€ on Amazon.

I chose MSI because it is a good brand for me (I've had cards from them before) and the card does not make much noise when gaming and is silent when not gaming.

And I'm not sure but by default it seems that it is overclocked.

To Canadus: what is your screen resolution? Shortly if you intend to play 1920x1080 (Full HD), a 1070 or 1070Ti will be fine to play game with Ultra settings.

If you have a resolution of 2560x1440 (2K), with a 1070(Ti) you can have High settings in game. To move to Ultra, you would need a 1080. Not rocket science though.

As it is still in beta..I wouldnt be so sure what is enough and what is not and take all this with a grain of salt.

I'm playing in HD right now, but want to move on to at least 2K & also to VR in the long run.

Good performance in 2.5 is an important point, though...

Additionally to DCS, I wan't to re-enter CA in X-Plane again. Had it installed a few months ago, but needed the SSD space for DCS 2.1 :D

In my opinion, for 2K you need at least a 1070. For VR I am not knowledgeable but I read that it is demanding.

If your budget allows for a 1070Ti, 1080 or 1080Ti, it will depend on your expectations regarding graphic quality and fps, as well as how long you want to last until you change your graphic card or buy a new PC.

Of course you can take a cheaper card than your budget allow, in order to save money for a new card upgrade in 1 or 2 years.

But at that time in the future, there will be new low-medium-high-very high end cards and the same question will arise again. Do I take a medium-high or a very high card? It is endless...

The 1070 is great for everything that's out in VR, such as the Car sims and other games in the oculus store etc. DCS, on the other hand, is one of the most demanding sims, I'm guessing it will be somewhat better when optimised more, I still think it will allways need the best card to get the best experience if you want to play decent medium-size missions. For now I just fly very small missions to keep the frames up, I'm also just happy to just fly around with no AI at all, it's still is an amazing experance, cannot wait when the rez is just ea little better for sims like DCS.
