JTAC support for mission creation.

Hi All,

 

After communicating with Maple Flag productions I was encouraged to approach the community to offer JTAC consultation to any users that required assistance creating missions.

 

I have just retired from 14 years of military service with the CAF (Canadian armed forces). 3 years with Field artillery as a forward observer attached with a infantry parachute company and 11 years with the CANSOFCOM with the Canadian special operations regiment CSOR. 8 of those years were spent as a JTAC and JTAC-I.

 

I have been apart of 3 tours in Afghanistan, central america and 1 tour in Iraq against ISIS.

 

My motivation is what the community has done for me with the A-10C module. Some of my brothers and sisters have found less attractive means to help with their stresses and mine I found in this great simulation. Now that I am no longer serving I would like to contribute where I can helping others have a great and realistic time. I also look to learn from others where I can within the community.

 

My experience is heavy on the SOF side of things but in general they are to aide conventional forces accomplish thier goals.

 

I have executed and created a significant amount of real and dry exercises at home and abroad with numerous peer units employing most CAS aircraft in small exercises all the way up to LFE (large force exercises).

 

I can aide with CAS with the J-Fire and 3.09-3 as well as 3-3. I have little experience with NATO specific TTPS and what some of those nations do.

 

I will not discuss any TTPs that CSOR or other peer units deemed their go to TTPs however that shouldnt effect creating real, effective mission sets you would like to create for the community.

 

My experiences include CAS with A-10, AV-8B, B-1,2 and 52, AC-130H/U/W and J, KC-130 HH, F15E/16/18 (CF-188, US navy and marine )/22/35,OV-10, British Harrier, Tornado, current french aircraft, dutch F16.

 

RW. Canadian Griffon in a CCA role with 7.62 and .50 cal side firing. OH-58, AH-1,64, UH-Y and Seahawk.

 

Field artillery. mortars to 155mm.

 

Naval gun fire. Canadian frigate and destroyer. American DDG.

 

I have vast experiences planning integrated attacks with all combat arms to achieve simo or sequential effects and the planning is truly a strong point here for me followed by its execution.

 

Please note that I dont preach to have the 100% solution but I aim to achieve the ground force commanders intent and that can be obtained numerous ways. With that said I understand other Jtacs will achieve this differently but I am quite confident I can bring value added to your mission of campaign development.

I hope you had a great Canada day as well!

 

I would like to do a tutorial that begins with the bare bones Aircraft check in all the way through the 12 steps of CAS as it is now dictated in the joint pubs and J-Fire. Keep it real regimented for beginners and then get flowing with missions or lessons that would be "friendly centric" CAS where you are really just completing a 5 line and moving fires along faster with those that are proficient.

 

At this time I am currently moving from Base to the city of Ottawa and dont have access to my computer cause Im living at a friends place until the house sells. Its an insane transition.

 

But it is for sure on my radar.

Wasnt that long ago the J'Fire was updated and a lot of Marine aviators sat at the round table and I love Marines dont get me wrong. But man do they love check lists and a solid plan. So they agreed to implement the below cut and paste as a guide. Its great for beginners but also great to look back at if youve been busy for a few hours and dont want things to get out of hand.

 

1. Routing/Safety of flight

2. CAS check in

3. Situation Update

4. Game plan

5. CAS brief "9 line"

6. Remarks/Restrictions

7. Readbacks

8. Correlation

9. Attack

10. Assess

11. BDA

12. Routing/Safety of flight

 

Now this is written so that all members can play off the same sheet of music so to speak but situation on the ground will dictate where you may have to "cut the fat".

Hello and welcome to DCS!

 

Its always welcome to have Veterans share their knowledge and expertise with the DCS crowd. The Goal of DCS seems to have always been to be as realistic as possible and the Veterans help add the realism aspect, may it be flight models, weaponry, JTAC/FAC, sensors, avionics, Mission and campaign design, etc.

Please keep in mind this is a guide and a great way to teach beginners to get the basics engrained into your brain.

 

However when you become proficient with this you can become significantly more flexible. However this flexibility comes at the cost of greater risk and also depends on how comfortable the aircraft and pilot you are working with is!

 

you can be a fantastic JTAC but if you get a Aussie F-18 or a dutch F16 the experience will be different.

I have another question about the 9 line Medevac:

the 3rd line is about priority in almost all documents it's

 

A - Urgent

B - Urgent Surgical

C - Priority

D - Routine

E - Convenience

 

But a mate tells me that since Afganistan the T format is used T0-T4 (in wikipedia it is said that NATO use that format) and to finish Here in this training center The ABC format is used :joystick:

 

Are the 3 format authorised ? ABC for people whith no medical knowledge, and T format for Medics ?

Or the JTAC isn't in the TOC and the unit who owns the AO is who you talk to, usually the S2 NCO via the RTO, possibly the Battle Captain or Battle NCOIC, or FIRES, but in my case it was me, the S2 NCO. Mine was a scout recon unit and we had a 8 man intel section and ran COISTs as well (Company Intelligence Support Team), which put intel assets in the line companies directly.

60% of the controls by JTAC were Type II from the TOC in OIF and when they weren't there the S2 took over.

 

We learned on the job pretty much. There were nights when I was doing air deconfliction for a Predator, a Scan Eagle, an AWT, CAS out of Baghdad and anything else coming in or out of the FOB from the TOC. I was trained to 'Find, Fix and Finish' enemy elements on the ground either supporting from the TOC or embeded in a ODA driven TF, not air deconflictions and CAS control, but I did it. When outside the wire I had a toughbook that gave me feeds of any UAV in the AO and in those situations I did no CAS control, just directing the UAVs.

 

In Indian Country the schoolhouse scenarios go out the window and you just make it happen, so there is a wide range of scenarios that can be used in DCS that are realistic.

 

I've been working on a couple of missions that kinda mimic some of the things I experienced, play testing internally and will share soon.

 

The biggest enemy in Iraq of air assets, MEDEVAC especially was the weather. MEDEVAC status RED happened all the time. Hopefully with the new Gulf map we get some dust storm weather to play with.

Working in a TOC. And out in the field.

 

To answer your question I am not familiar with the medical 9 line. In fact i dont like the fact its called a 9 line cause the two can get mixed in the fog of wat and it sucks!

 

I have called 4 medivac birds and I just spone english on the radio. Some questions were asked and I gave them the answer. It wasnt a time and place where you can take out your pen and start filling out a cheet sheet.

 

I want to stress that authorizations as you put it are for fools. For example in Afghanistan you HAVE to give a 9 line. Let me tell you when hawg is ovrehead and has been visual frindlies that he and jtac feel comfortable with the sa he is tipping the wing and bringing in 30mm

 

If you all train with the same medical 9 line it meets the intent of streemlining the battle.

J'ai une question concernant le guidage laser, dans le cas d'un jtac qui va guider une gbu depuis le sol, l'avion largue la bombe "bomb away 30 second" la phrase "10 second" est-ce que c'est le pilote qui le dit pour indiquer au JTAC quand allumer le laser ou bien c'est le JTAC qui le dit pour indiquer qu'il va bientôt l'allumer.

 

Si c'est au pilote de le dire quel est le meilleur moment pour allumer le laser ? 5,10,15 sec avant impact ?

Sorry about the delay.

 

The weapon is dropped balistically as you know in ccrp. You are dropping in a laser basket.

 

10 seconds prior to impact the PILOT calls "10 seconds, laser on". The JTAC would then designate the tgt with the laser and reply "lasing, 1688" for example.

 

The reason the laser is not activated sooner is because the weapon could make so many corrections in the air it would loose velocity and land short of the tgt.

 

This tactic works well in BOC or bomb on coordinate especially with a low ceilling of no less than 5 or 6k feet to acquire the laser enegry and not have to pass a talk on to the air craft.

I dont fly the M2000 but perhaps the models user manual has a chart?

 

Otherwise I would invest time in making practice deliveries. I.e. 20k feet at x speed takes y amount of seconds. Subtract ten seconds and call that your "10 seconds laser on".

 

Just a thought.
