HP's Reverb VR Pro Headset

For some a powered PCI USB card works like a charm, for others it fails and the powered USB hub does the trick. It could be that those that don’t find success with the PCI USB card need an upgraded PC power supply as well.

It seems to be impossible to know how this whole thing works. I am not under powered with a 650W PSU. However, when I had the Index, it wouldn't work with my powered PCIe USB card, nor my powered external USB hub. It only worked with a mobo socket. The Reverb works with my powered external USB hub and not with either the PCIe card or mobo sockets!

I've never figured it out either. When I had the cv1, it didn't work with the pcie card I bought, it worked with the mobo USB sockets but had issues. So I bought a better pcie card. The issue is each person's usb's sockets will be different so there is no telling what the real solution would be. Specifically each mobo will have different drivers for USB too. Not so universal after all. I remember a lot of people complaining when the Oculus came out, that it required a third party USB card.

These VR headsets, especially the Reverb should always be used with powered USB hubs (or separately powered PCIe cards) in general. No one with a sane mind does want to power his computer screen via USB connection, let alone two displays. This is basically what these headsets are.

I bought a 7-port powered USB PCIe card based on the recommendations I read in this forum.

It performed worse than my motherboard's integrated USB ports.

I have frequent drop outs of the HMD, which also led to other peripherals connected to the card losing connection. Note that this card is the best USB 3.0 add-on card available in Australia. So, getting another peripheral shouldn't be necessary unless you don't have a spare port.

I think that for most of us USB addon card is redundant and a loss of money. Instead, most of our PC have USB TypeC that can afford the power draw and stability required by the Reverb

I don't know if HP design have flow in this, since the cable is USB 3.1 it should max draw 900mA, but anyway USB-C can push by design up to 3A@5V more than 3 times the normal USB 3.0 specifications.

I'm using a short USB to USB-TypeC adapter bought from Amazon and not found issues with it.

My motherboard only has one USB c port but I don't think everyone's board has them. They are more widely accepted now and should be more of a normality soon.

My PC it's 2 years old and have 2 USB-C , front and rear, but type -C was first introduced in 2015... 5 years ago. I think that unless you have an ITX format or a mini-pc, you should have 1 of this free: if you exclude phone/tablet cables, very few external peripheral use this connector(just now some external M2 SSD are coming with USB-C).

By the way, some gaming motherboard have an hybrid TypeA Gen 2 (red instead of blue) that can draw up to 1.5A

I updated my board last year which is why I have one because the previous gigabyte board which was also a gaming board, didn't have type C. Mine currently is a red port.

I thought I had my Reverb running really well, and it was, but I brought a powered USB hub and its now running absolutely flawlessly. So smooth, no ghosting, really really happy with it. So in my journey to getting this Reverb running well the biggest performance gains have been - running in full screen, selecting 'Low latency mode' to ultra on the Nvidia control panel (biggest result) and running through a powered USB hub. Your mileage may very but damn its nice to be able to spot your refueling tanker at 30 miles!

Where is this latency setting in the Nvidia control panel?

Low latency is either on or off. There is no "Ultra" for it. Perhaps I misunderstand something.

Hm, I have a 1080ti and need to go back and have a look. I can say the Reverb is REALLY CLEAR compared to the CV1. What a difference!

You guys all have me wanting to try that low latency setting now. I'm already getting great performance, so maybe I can turn some more eye candy on. :D

This is not a magic bullet. It can have a negative effect on fps. Just do a search on it.

Seems to be effective only in GPU bound circumstances. Use with caution.

So, in other words, try it and see what it does. If it doesn't give me a visual improvement, set it back. Got it. So glad I have somebody to tell me these things.

I don’t think, I functionally got any spare FPS out of it, but, the visual improvement was much more crisp/clear

Not sure I understand why the low latency option would have any effect on crispness or clarity.

Hmmm, I think some of that may be placebo or you've inadvertently changed other settings. USB either works or it doesn't as it's a digital signal. The NVIDIA ultra setting is simply lowering the frame buffer, which again shouldn't impact smoothness (it made zero difference on my 2080 Ti). Not sure how running in full screen could make any difference either, as your GPU doesn't need to do extra work to pass through a ln image it's already rendered. Still, I might give this last suggestion a try, as who knows if there's some kind of bug in DCS.

I'm confident that it won't impact performance or image quality at all. That's not how the low latency Tech works.

The low latency setting for me didn't change fps or clarity it stopped the super annoying degenerating frames from fine at the start to choppy to unplayable (DCS is waiting or whatever it said) It was really bad before and never again after switching this setting to ultra. The USB hub took draining power from my PC to draining from the wall socket and this smoothed out the whole experience amazingly well. I know practically nothing about software and hardware setups but I know I now have a Reverb that is astonishingly good in DCS. For me its been incremental steps from looks awesome with some issues, adjust a setting and either wow! or back to where I was (the motionvector settings in the steam file reprojection thingy made it heaps worse for me), I have by accident stumbled upon a series of settings that make the Reverb run exceptionally well in my case with my hardware and software settings quite by accident and certainly not by superior knowledge on the subject. But damn its good to be me! :D
