A-10C DSMS Sim mode

Several purposes.

First of all, nothing gets expanded, so it's safe to set Master Arm to Train and use the aircraft just like you would in combat.

Secondly, while in train mode it's possible to create entirely virtual loadouts so that you could train to drop pretty much any type of weapon, even when no weapon of that type is loaded. As far as the IFFCC is concerned, all the steering and guidance and abort cues will be the same as if that weapon was loaded.

Obviously what the system can't do is simulate sensors that aren't loaded, so without TGP, it can't simulate the TGP. Without Mav, there will be no Mav display, and without Sidewinder, there will be no heat seeker.

But the inert/training variants TGM-65 and CAT-9 will do the job just fine.

These virtual loads will not influence how the place flies. 6 virtual GBU-31s will not make the Hog any heavier and the aircraft will not simulate any asymmetric drag, roll, or yaw.

It's great for training in a "realistic" virtual environment, although in DCS we can drop live weapons like crazy and not have to worry about the amount of money the taxpayers have to cover. ;)

For dogfight training, the train mode combined with CAT-9 is a really safe way to do a realistic training and be sure that no missiles will be launched under any circumstances.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! One question, does the sim/train mode simulate a hit? For instance shooting a CAT-9 in training mode, how do you know you fictionally hit your target?

Nope, but IIRC the training planes usually also have a sensor probe which evaluates all data and then you can make an educated guess on your impact chance taking into account enemy speed, angle, heading...

For bombs you have training bombs for that, the small ones have the ballistic performance of the Mk82 and they have a smoke warhead so you can see were you hit.

Once again, that is all set for training in the real airplane where every maverick launched cost the taxpayers around 70.000 $. In a simulator it is not needed really, since all your weapons are free.

But as Yurgon said, it pumps up the simulation even more.

Well.. I think it could be effective for example if you wanted to train air to air with friends and not want to kill them.. or training air to ground without having to go back and rearm.

There is a script available which allows you to fire live A/A missiles (and it will also work for SAMs) and the script detonates the missile / SAM at a safe distance so as to not cause damage. We run it on our dedicated NTTR server.

Of course, you could also build a training mission where you and your adversary are invulnerable. And if you really don’t want to have to RTB to re-arm, you could set it up with unlimited weapons / fuel.

True.. however to "simulate in the simulator" type mission . I know that's taking it a bit too far but it adds to the realism of the simulator.

This is why I like the self-destruct script. Nothing really gives proper feedback on maneuvering for a shot like reaching the point where you can actually pull the trigger.

Just to be clear: sim mode and training mode are not the same: if you refer to master arm on training and training weapons use, what has been said Is true; if you refer to sim mode in keyboard assignment and option screen of dcs, that Is the realism setting of the game: in sim mode you have the maximum realism, compared to game mode in which flight dynamics and some systems are simplified for the casual user.

I was referring to master arm on training.
