Cobra847 said:
The Corsair is well advanced and we're excited to show it off.

It's however part of a much larger undertaking; and we're inclined to make sure that we ship a minimum level of content together with the aircraft to ensure it's marketability and attractiveness from a gameplay perspective.

First impressions are everything, afterall. 🙂

Fleet Air Arm (FAA) units were created and equipped in the United States, at Quonset Point or Brunswick and then shipped to war theaters aboard escort carriers. The first FAA Corsair unit was 1830 NAS, created on the first of June 1943, and soon operating from HMS Illustrious. At the end of the war, 18 FAA squadrons were operating the Corsair. British Corsairs served both in Europe and in the Pacific. The first, and also most important, European operations were the series of attacks (Operation Tungsten) in April, July and August 1944 on the German battleship Tirpitz, for which Corsairs from HMS Victorious and HMS Formidable provided fighter cover.[75] It appears the Corsairs did not encounter aerial opposition on these raids.

Luftwaffe and Japanese Corsairs

On 18 July 1944, a British Corsair F4U-1A, JT404 of 1841 Naval Air Squadron, was involved in anti-submarine patrol from HMS Formidable en route to Scapa after Operation Mascot (an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz). It flew in company with a Fairey Barracuda. Due to technical problems the Corsair made an emergency landing in a field on Hamarøy north of Bodø, Norway. The pilot, Lt Mattholie, was taken prisoner and the aircraft captured undamaged. Luftwaffe interrogators failed to get the pilot to explain how to fold the wings so as to transport the aircraft to Narvik. The Corsair was ferried by boat for further investigation. Later the Corsair was taken to Germany and listed as one of the captured enemy aircraft (Beuteflugzeug) based at Erprobungsstelle Rechlin, the central German military aviation test facility and the equivalent of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, for 1944 under repair. This was probably the only Corsair captured by the Germans.[89]

The versions of the Corsair used in Korea from 1950 to 1953 were the AU-1, F4U-4B, -4P and -5N and 5-NL.[91] There were dogfights between F4Us and Soviet-built Yakovlev Yak-9 fighters early in the war, but when the enemy introduced the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15, the Corsair was outmatched: on 10 September 1952, a MiG-15 made the mistake of getting into a turning contest with a Corsair piloted by Marine pilot Captain Jesse G. Folmar, with Folmar shooting the MiG down with his four 20 mm cannon. In turn, four MiG-15s shot down Folmar minutes later; Folmar bailed out and was quickly rescued with little injury.[92] ...

Last but not least, is a note on F4U-1D Corsair development. We can proudly report that PBR conversion of it's textures is underway.

F4U-1D Corsair

So we’re pretty sure you’re ready to have your Mk II Eyeballs cringe with excitement, and have mentioned for months the Whistling Death is going through texture conversion for physically based rendered textures. Our artist has almost completed retexturing of all enclosed or hard to access parts and objects, after that he will proceed with the large airframe areas. This should take far less time, after which we can move on to cockpit retexturing. Hopefully, by the time we post our next update, we will be able to show you a complete or near complete external model. Below, is our work in progress sneak peeks, but do keep in mind they are WIP and not finalized.

Christmas Update

We’re pleased that everyone enjoyed the Flight Model and Weapons demonstration during VFAT this year. In case you missed it, here’s the video:

Many of you have wondered why we didn’t show the cockpit, and it’s because it is getting extensive updates. With the available manufactures documentation and drawings, our artist have been able to replicate assemblies with ease and accuracy.

Below you’ll see many of the major assemblies in a mostly completed state; barring some bolts and wire cables. The instruments had their Federal Standard and Army/Navy part numbers cross checked with Volume 6 of the Army/Navy Index of Aeronautical Equipment dated 1 March 1944. An assortment of Kollsman, Pioneer, and Sperry instruments have been modeled in detail as one would expect to see in 1944.

In September of 44, a modification order was issued to the manufactures to have the stall warning and water/methanol injection lights removed. Corsairs already in the line of duty had field orders to remove them. We realize users may feel the need to use them since there is no sense of momentum sitting at a desk, so in our version we will add a special menu item so that users have a choice to enable them.

Next, our artists modeled the missing manual release bomb and drop tank assembly. This device was added in an event that the electrical connection to the pylons had failed. But if the cable is hit by a bullet, expect it not to work and/or the items to fall off the pylons!

F4U-1D_Cockpit-Fixes_005.jpg

F4U-1D_Cockpit-Fixes_003.jpg

The canopy was a high priority item to get corrected. Many flight simulators have had very inaccurate assemblies over the years and we want to do our best to portray the real deal. Sitting in the cockpit, users will find that it’s pretty cramped with such a thick canopy frame. Especially since it’s crowded with levers, pulleys and mirrors! The 1D variant also had it’s slide stoppers shortened to two notches allowing a few inches of ventilation while flying. Of course, one can still fly fully open as well! The emergency release procedure is manual labor in itself:

  • Step 1: Pull safety cord
  • Step 2: Pull handles inward to release from rail bracket
  • Step 3: Jam handles forward
  • Step 4: Push up on canopy

Throughout World War II, radio systems were constantly being modified. None more than the famous AN/ARC-5 system. We exchanged many e-mails with subject matter experts, and have decided on the following ancillary equipment that one might find on any given late war 1D Corsair (Left to Right):

  • C-38 Remote Receiver Selector
  • C-30A Remote Transmitter Selector
  • C-26 Remote Tuner
  • Manufacture Fabricated AN/APX-1 IFF remote switches.

These babies come with hand cranks so get those scrolling fingers on a workout!

Essex Class Aircraft Carrier

Viewers of our VFAT demonstration finally had a good look at our Essex Class carrier. That was just a basic model allowing us to begin coding. Within the next few months, there will be considerable updates to the island and weapon systems. We want users to have an immersive experience while sitting on the deck up close and personal. In the renders below, details have been added to the 127mm, 40mm, and 20mm guns. As well as the island detailing for those wing checks. The hanger bay will be modeled with working lifts too!
