Our group is going to run this on Sunday evening, It looks like a really well thought out mission, and the video briefing is a nice touch.

@skylit -- Thank you for your comments and sorry for the late response--I missed a number of posts. If your group did fly the mission, I hope it went well for you.

Thanks again,

Paul

Hi I just saw this mission and would love to give it a try. A few of our guys got interested in the Mi-8 can I simply exchange the player (client) Hueys with Mi-8s? That should leave all triggers intact, no?

@EntropySG -- It might be a little after the fact now, but I believe the exchange should work. Sorry for not responding sooner.

Thanks,

Paul

Just an update. We gave this mission a pretty good workout with the latest DCS World update as of 5/7/16 and all went well. If anyone else does experience problems, please post those and I will look into it as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Paul

First, I'd like to thank you for this mission and the briefing you made to go with it.

I've only tested Cargo_Escort_Public_Release_02.miz. 2016-02-27 as a UH-1H single player mission with a view to Coop later.

I really enjoyed it but found some problems with the AI C-130's (Cargo2 and Cargo3) either refusing to land or RTB'ing.

I'm not sure if it's intended but the BM-21 Rocket Attack on Novorossiysk airbase (after Cargo1 unloads), destroys the Warehouse and stops Cargo2 and Cargo3 landing so they RTB.

Of course you can destroy the BM-21 units before they fire but it feels a bit of a cheat.

I placed a

  • Hemtt TFFT
  • APC M1025 HMMWV

at the south ATC Tower, so the AB would continue to function.

I also created a 'Runway' trigger zone and used CTLD to count unloaded crates and the flag so when the runway was clear

if trigger.misc.getUserFlag(4) == 0 then
return true
else
return false
end

the C-130's (Cargo2/Cargo3) waypoint 2 orbit 'STOP condition' would trigger and they could progress to landing at Novorossiysk.

I also used a numeric flag to record which C-130 (Cargo1, Cargo2 or Cargo3) crates where blocking/cleared from the runway, so a message was displayed for each state change of Runway CLOSED/OPEN to traffic.

Managing ATC with unitexists/isalive/inzone/outzone was a problem so I ended 'keeping is simple' / sequential as I want to use it in MP

  • Cargo1 - straight in
  • Cargo2 - Spawn at Sochi-Adler, hold at WP 2 until R/wy clear of Cargo
  • Cargo3 - delayed activation at Sochi-Adler, activated when Time more than 10 min and Cargo2 not in Theater i.e. Cargo2 unloaded or shot down, hold at WP 2 until R/wy clear of Cargo

There is a lull between Cargo2 and Cargo3 arriving because of Cargo3's late activation but it's better than an RTB and the time can be used to hunt for enemy infantry and/or artillery in the UH-1H or just too have a break/brew while waiting.

First, I'd like to thank you for this mission and the briefing you made to go with it.

Thank you very much for your comments and for taking time to work on the mission. It can definitely benefit from some tweaks. While flying this mission we also found a few scenarios that could preclude the cargo aircraft from landing. I'll work on those and will also incorporate your changes.

The artillery attack on the north end of the base is just to add some action and has no bearing on mission success. So far, I have not seen a case where that attack has stopped the cargo aircraft from landing. However, if any aircraft are operating near or over the base, that will cause an approaching cargo plane to abort its landing. They will try to come back a few times, but sometimes they do RTB. Since I only expected choppers to be operating at the base, they get an alert when a cargo plane is in-bound and are instructed to land. One problem we have seen, though, is any CAS flights working a close enemy convoy will also get in the way of the cargo craft. Other than moving the initial enemy convoys much further from the base, I'm not sure how to handle that. I did want to add a little sense of urgency to the mission. I think I'll have that alert go to all aircraft so they can leave the immediate area around the base long enough to let the cargo plane land.

If you do fly this as a coop mission, I hope your group will enjoy it.

Thanks again,

Paul

Thanks for the mission - we (2 of us) tried it out last week. The problem we had was that the C-130s never took off.

We couldn't find a way to entice them into taking off and we ran the mission a couple of times - first time we waited to see if they would take off first (they didn't) and second we took off first - but they still got stuck on the taxiway, near where they should turn to go onto the runway.

@Brixmis -- I am very sorry to hear that you had trouble with the mission. We did run into a similar problem when piloted F-15s, i.e. non-AI, were in the mission, so I made a version with client F-15s taking off from a different air base. It seems that human pilot activity has a negative effect on AI behavior from which it never recovers.

I'm not quite sure why I did not post this at the time, but I have attached it to this post. I'll try to make it more official and replace the other version.

If you do give this another try, please let me know how it goes.

Thank you,

Paul

Thanks Paul and don't worry - we didn't spend too long on it - just decided to check here in case I had missed something.

We'll try the new version (I don't know how long it will be, but I will try it on my own on the server in the meantime) and let you know how we get on.

If anyone wants to have a go with me this weekend, just give a shout (pm best).

We tested it on the server this afternoon and it worked, no problem, once we knew what we were doing.

We were unsure whether we were supposed to take off before the C-130s or after. We found that if we took off before them, they got stuck like before, on the taxiway. But if we followed them along the taxiway, there was no problem.

One strange thing, though - the MiG-23s that took off to intercept got shot down down by the MiG-21 that was attacking us.

It looked to us like they were both Russian, so it was a bit confusing.

Thanks for the follow-up. I'm glad it worked better for you. Regarding the interceptor behavior, I have no idea why that's happening. Very odd. I'll have a look at the mission.

Thanks.

We are not very experienced in A/A combat, so we didn't get to the end, but we would like to use it for future practise. It does seem a good mission for that.

Oh - I had a go with the UH-1 from the carrier, too - good fun, that :thumbup:

@Brixmis--Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.

I took a look at the mission and all aircraft coalitions are set up correctly. I wonder if AI can be guilty of friendly fire. I suppose it's possible that a missile, once launched, can lock on to an unintended target. That's an odd one for sure.
