RECORD AVI - a Mission Editor tool

Recommended Posts

Great tutorial for recording tool, but me and my friends having problems with recording from multiplayer tracks. With singleplayer tracks its working fine, but it doesnt matter which quality, resolution, recording method i choose with multi tracks simply cant work. After pressing record, game loads and recording doesnt start. I see only map, on which i can move, so game is responding and its paused due to "P" next to time. I can press Pause Break, clicking on anything i want, recording cant start. I need it fast, for important video and worst is that its happening to my friends too :( can somebody help me?

Isn't it the case that the mission/recording starts at XX:XX time while actual action (e.g. you entering the cockpit) starts at time YY:YY?

What a nightmare compared to just saving as a DiVX format its taken me hours to view my track as a ogv. Its quite annoying as I want to edit in windows live movie maker but the file cannot seem to be converted and the VLC player is quite bad at converting.

I am trying to redo my training videos to accommodate changes in the startup procedures in the 1.1.0.9 patch. The mouse pointer is showing up as a white box after exporting the track? Anyone know what might be causing this and how I can get rid it. I did not have this problem in the 1.1.0.8 patch.

I think your workflow is completely wrong and that's why you suffer :)

I presume your goal is to edit the recorded vid in WMM. It looks like WMM doesn't fit a proper workflow because it supoorts import of only these formats http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Importing-files-into-Windows-Movie-Maker-frequently-asked-questions# so you'd have to:

 1. RAT: record in one of its formats
 2. output vid -> convert to one of the formats supported by WMM
 3. open the converted video in WMM

Now, from the resource given above it appears that the best choice for step #2 would be a 100% quality MPEG. This however introduces an extra, obsolete conversion path. Not only the quality will be (at least) slightly worse compared to my reference procedure given earlier, it can also result in an unexpected color space conversion which will give washed out colors http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=989796&postcount=10 The solution given there applies to all formats - both lossless and lossy, the latter being your case.

I have no idea. I suggest you limit your selection for export to something like 10 seconds and try all the codecs choices to see if it's limited to one codec only. But first of all, start a new topic. You won't get the attention you'll need here as it seems the topic has settled into being miinnne ;)

Here's a quick RAT demo. Time wasted on preparation (track recording into AVI, avi editing in VirtualDUB, encoding using x264): ~30 minutes.

Another one from 800x600 test RAT recording

Routine: RAT -> uncompressed AVI* -> virtualdub -> x264 lossless

Something has gotten screwed up in the process as the quality is not as good as it should have been.

* 90 s video ~ 7.5 GB :)

Important notes:

1. It seems that recording at 1.0 speed using RAT may result in some small stutters. Recording at less than 1.0 - to be investigated. EDIT: Doesn't solve the issue with the camera jiggle.

For the same reason: do not use camera jiggle [LShift+J]. It will look really bad.

2. Info bar [?Ctrl+Y]

It's necessary when noting scene times but it will get recorded. If disabled the track playback switches to camera editing mode. Solution:

FUIResourcesStatusbar-Plane-1024.res

the beginning of the file contains:

dialog
egin
	ag{-1}
coord{0, 738, 1024, 768}

Change 738 to some high number, e.g. 838. The info bar will not be disabled but will not be visible during the recording.

I tried your other method but its incompatible with the sound, what I did was record as OGV then convert to MP4 and edit. Took a day but I got there in the end.

Any specifics? Which procedure?

I think the MP tracks don't work with RAT is because RAT doesn't recognize

the host unpausing the game. At least, that'd be my best guess, as I've tried

setting the record start time so that I know I was in game at that point, but

no luck :(

Dowly,

does the track PLAY properly? Can you watch it after the pause, where the action is?

EDIT:

To answer noc_orthodontist questions from another topic:

Certainly. Just watch this track I made using my native resolution

1366 X 768, 24 fps, Max quality (100), and Theora+Vorbis compression. This was converted by this program to FLV, which I directly uploaded to youtube.

Everytime the video is recorded, you see that flickering grey before the screen adapts. Maybe its my GPU. I don't know.

Ogg:

... is quirky. Accept it. Go through my posts in this topic to read some ranting :) The artifacts you're getting in the beginning of your ogg vid is nothing unusual. You can also try to convert it to another format to test what would happen. My bet is no ogg=no artifacts.

Uploading FLV to YouTube to avoid re-compression does not work. There's currently no way to slip any type of vid to YT without re-compression. To find out more see videohelp forums.

Aye, I can watch the track with the replay feature, but RAT doesn't work with

client tracks (I've tried 4-5, doesn't unpause).

Can you send ma the track? Was it recorded in WH 1*0.9? If it gets confirmed it might be a good idea to fill a bug report.

The smallest MP track I can find is ~18megs, but yeh, I can pop you the link

a bit later if you want to check it out.

This was recorded in BS 1.0.2 and is indeed the client-side track. I'm pretty sure

the host-side track would work with RAT, tho I've never tried.

Ah rgr then. :(

The issue is the exact same as eXecutor has with his MP tracks (post #50),

so I'd be willing to assume this is happening to everyone who tries to use RAT

with client-side tracks.

I'll make a post to the "Question about upcomin patch" thread in BS section.

Nate seems to be checking that often and reporting new bugs to ED.

Not that it probably needs it as Dowly has filed a bug report, but I can confirm this.

I've been trying to use RAT all day (before finding this post) with the exact same result on client side tracks. They play just fine, but won't unpause in RAT.

Well here's a new problem for Me. I am trying to record a track and the editer will not save the files in the movie folder???? Tried png and wave. also tried theora and vorbis.... no luck. what gives???

Try your Users or Documents and settings folder. Newer DCS versions seem to prefer those locations for some reason.

Well if it isnt dowly from subsim. Hello man! Its commandosolo2009 :D

Bucic, real sorry for the weirdness. Now just so you know, the feat we're looking for is bugged. In SP, its no problemo, but in MP, it is. Unless one jumps into an unpaused server (which I dont think is possible), I think fraps or another IGR is in order.

Alas, I tried loading the track as a mission in the ME, and disabled F10 theater view. Also switched skill from client to player. Nothing worked so far..

Huh? pausing a multiplayer game with no occupants is a feature of ServMan, not of DCS multiplayer. Not all servers use ServMan, which means they run continuously (although the have the disadvantage that they might not always restart automatically etc).

stallturn (disclaimer: my server) does not use Servman, you can make videos there (although on missions with Ka-50 I had to turn external views off, since A-10C pilots would cheat with F5 view to sluaghter the defenceless choppers).
