The pilot will maintain a sight picture, that is refined with practice. As a team, the pilot tries to maintain his sight references, whilst the RIO gives fine tuning, so the pilot can adjust his sight picture a little on the run up the hose if needed, based on the hit commentary from the RIO. The basket moves up and right due to the Tomcat's large nose and "bow wave", so sometimes a RIO would say "right one, up a half..." BoneDust
If you can't sort through comms you'd never make it as a pilot in real life. There's a lot of chatter and that's the reality of it. I haven't seen the video, but so far I think Heatblur did a great job with Jester; I love it! Where's the video? MRSHADO
Yep. It’s a team. I’m still close with my RIO’s- well, the ones who are still alive... Victory205, Can you help with a question we had in CVW-11 - who calls the ball? Pilot or RIO? We're sure CRM will be important in Tomcat and lots of reference material, books, articles etc. describe the RIO as the guru of external comms - but this one question remains. In the video clip here (1:55) it sounds like the pilot says, "got a ball" on the ICS and the RIO calls confirms it when asked by paddles. i7-8700K / 64GB RAM / ASUS Strix GTX 1080 Ti / (Win 10 Pro) / Oculus Rift S

MooneyTail
I'm not 100% sure about the Tomcat, but in 2 seat Rhinos the WSO will call the ball so I imagine it would be the RIO who calls it.
