How much SSD does DCS require ?

Recommended Posts

Hello !

I consider buying a new laptop since my current one barely reaches the minimum requirement for DCS. I want a decent laptop for the upcoming DCS 2.5. :)

I would like to install DCS on a SSD drive, but i need to be sure that this drive will be big enough. I have the NTTR map, and plan to buy the Strait of Hormuz map.

Do you think that a 128GB SSD drive is big enough for DCS 2.5 + WINDOWS10 ? (DCS 2.5 with Caucasus, NTTR and Strait of Hormuz).

Thanks all for your advice !

Happy flying !

Kind regards,

Vince

On my 128GB SSD I did not have enough space for WIN10 + DCS1.5 + DCS2.0 + Nevada + Normandy + DCS modules... I bought a new one, Samsung 256GB and now i have all my DCS modules installed on it and 118GB free after installation. OS WIN10 is on my old SSD.

So, I think you will not be able to install everything on that 128GB SSD. Consider also that the SSD occupancy over 80% has a performance drop.

I don't thinks so. 256G should be fine (hopefuly, that's what I have now :D).

Currently, my 2.2 install with NTTR, Normandy and most modules weights 85 GB. Add additional maps and Windows to that, no chance you'll squeeze it into 128GB.

I recently asked if circa 100GB would be enough for DCS2.5, with NTTR, Normandy, some campaigns and aircraft, and was told that it was a reasonable number to run with.

Based upon that, I'd guess that 128 is NOT going to be enough to also include SOH and Win10. As already suggested, go with 256GB as a min.

System: 9700, 64GB DDR4, 2070S, NVME2, Rift S, Jetseat, Thrustmaster F18 grip, VPC T50 stick base and throttle, CH Throttle, MFG crosswinds, custom button box, Logitech G502 and Marble mouse.

Server: i5 2500@3.9Ghz, 1080, 24GB DDR3, SSD.

About a year ago I went from 256 GB to 512 GB. It's mostly for Windows (Win 7, though. Not sure how much space Win 10 requires in comparison) and DCS. Then again, at times I had release, OpenBeta and OpenAlpha at the same time, so that took up a lot of real estate obviously.

So +1 for 256 GB, or more if the wallet permits. I'd say 128 GB is going to run out of space sooner rather than later with DCS and Windows.

Alright I thank you all ! :)

I will go for 256GB then !

256GB may suffice but you won't have much space for anything else. DCS does like to take up a lot of room.

^^ This.

I have a 500GB SSD for flight sims only (this does not count terrain and other FSX/P3D addons), and it is over half full. Get the largest drive you budget will allow.

I dedicate a 256GB SSD just for DCS. a 256GB SSD for the O/S and standard apps. Also have a 512GB SSD for Rift/VR games, and a 1TB HDD "Junk" drive.

256GB for DCS is plenty after the merge. Tho the 120 will likely be too small once all maps are available in 2.5.

I use a 256GB for 3 x DCS plus some other stuff, like Ethereum BlockChain and such that only runs off a SSD. Even worse than DCS on a HDD.

One should only use HDD for movies and pics, all the rest is SSD arena

128 GB might be a bit too short for DCS 2.5 + several maps + Win 10. While it may be enough right now I think you might hit the wall in the very near future. I'd suggest to get at least 256 GB, but only if you only want to run DCS. If there is anything else get at least 500 GB. (500GB still have reasonable prices)

Hey guys, I am currently saving money for a new rig. My current Specs are in short an AMD FX 8350, R9 380 and 32 GB DDR3 RAM. DCS is currently installed on a HDD. I wonder if I will have a noticeable boost just by installing DCS on a SSD (looking at DCS 2.5) and leaving the rest as it is....well, yet

I dont want to start a new thread as I think that this one perfectly fit my question though.

Thanks and sorry for Highjacking this thread :D

Yes you'll see a boost by upgrading to an SSD. Your load times will be significantly reduced and i'm sure you'll see less stutters when loading new objects into the game.

I highly recommend getting an SSD, it's a worthwhile upgrade in general for your computer.

Nobody ever wants to hear this, but if you're buying a new rig with the specific intention of running DCS World on it, you're better off getting a desktop PC. :)

A Z370 motherboard, Coffee Lake CPU such as the K (unlocked) Core i3 (4 cores, 4 threads), 16GB DDR4, and a nice video card. Doesn't have to really break the bank, and will deliver outstanding performance.

Desktop = better performance and lower cost.

yep !

Unless you find a laptop with a 7700k Desktop CPU and a 1080Ti.

That thing will be 5+kg, 3 inches thick and have Dual PSU, each roughly 250-300w and cost 4k upwards. Watercooling was nice as this will melt sooner or later.

Honestly, I have run thru a few gamer laptops, all for a hell of money, even SLI once, it's wsted money ! Fore that money you can have Dual Titans in SLI and a Flagship CPU with 32GB and Dual NVMe of the bigger kind. THAT is far better

But if you do need it for portability etc, I guess it comes down to something like AlienWare. To give some perspective, I had to buy an Rift capable laptop. Not so much for gaming, but for Rift use. And an Alienware 15 R3 with 512GB SSD, 1TB SATA drive, 15.6 60Hz G-sync monitor, i7-7820, 16GB DDR4 2400Mhz set me back about $2500 USD.

Desktop Build is about: $2000USD

So 8700K is about $400

370 MB is about $280

2400MHz memory is about $180

1000W PSU is about $160

1080Ti $850

Case $50

case 50$ ?????? eeaahhhh, you dont use 50$ cases, do you ??

150-250 is more appropriate for such high end devices like 1080Ti.

Holy shit, I really hope for you that you´re just kidding...50$ for a case that contains Hardware for 2000$? If I can recommend you a case, so get a thermaltake core v71 (click me), thats a really cool thing and provides enough space for the hardware...but its a monster of a case and demands enough free space to place it properly.

I prefer buying a laptop as i will indeed need it for portability.

I was thinking of the Gigabyte Saber 15 (about 1300€):

Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core 2.8 GHz

16 Go DDR4

SSD 256 Go

HDD 1 To

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050

It seems to be the best i can find for this prices. Also the laptops from HP (Omen) seem good, but for an equivlent build i would have to pay an higher price.

Kind regards,

Vince

No, I don't have a $50 case. I have the opposite: Corsair Obsidian 900D

But I also realize that not everyone needs and Obsidian.
