frequent stutter & freeze

Recommended Posts

This unpleasant error is here described in several threads, unfortunately for me the game freezes so often that I'm out of the DCS completely poisoned.

Today is Wednesday so hopefully will finally be the update that removes the problem.

Wrote down the last 10 game freezes I experienced and they were all related to a quick change of view angel. i.e.

- take off, get speed at low alt, pull up and look back

- after a merge pull up and look back to keep an eye to the foe

- attack ground targets, pull up, quick look back to see the trucks burning

- dive on a foe, fire, pull up, zoom out and looking back

- stall at hammer head on a Spit, spin around and look around to spot the Spit

- dogfighting, tight turns and look up to keep an eye on the foe

- zooming out while changing the view back to forward after a quick check six

…. the list goes on like that ….

Made a test where I flew around at Burning Skies server with TrackIR paused with F9 key, i.e. only default cockpit view looking forward.

I did dog fight, I did dive to ground targets, I did B&Z a furball, but always just default view looking forward. Died couple of times as I could not track the enemies, but always just kept the forward view. The server was busy, people were joining and leaving the server but I did not freeze a game a single time for two hours.

Enabled the TrackIR, went for a dogfight with P51, we lost some altitude, a Spit joins the party, looking around hectically to keep track of both targets and the game froze. That was less than 10 minutes of game play with TrackIR enabled.

Also did a test with TrackIR enabled, but with the default TrackIR profile, instead of my more sensitive one that allows more quick change of view angle (more quick check 6) and additionally trying to be as smooth as possible with looking around and I did not freeze the game for an hour. Changed back to my more sensitive profile and were deliberately looking around aggressively -> game froze in the first dog fight I got in less than 10 minutes of game play.

To me it looks like the game freeze is related to quick changes of view, like what you get when you are dog fighting or looking targets, checking 6, looking instruments, checking 6, …..

Just like in the video I posted some time ago in this very thread.

Here I basically do some fighting, get a shot on a Spit, pull up and away checking 6, then keep the view forward for a while and then a quick check 6 and bam! The game froze!

I also have a feeling that changes of altitude or the zoom level (i.e. level of detail of Normandy map ground displayed) might affect this too.

What good is a combat flight simulator that allows only looking straight forward???

Hoping for a quick resolution by the developers, this issues has been ruining the gaming experience for far too long already.

I havent had the crashes, but noticed with latest 1.57 update, that I flew quite a bit yesterday - just performance checks really, that looking around, catching the rear hemisphere, causes a big stutter, like a very quick freeze (milliseconds). Is easily noticeable in VR, cause half the screen goes black kinda thing. Some areas of the map is worse than others.

This is something I have noticed in 2.1 too, Normandy, and just thought it was a Normandy thing.

Joined Burning Skies too a few days ago, had a quick engagement, framerate was quite solid at 45 fps all the time, until I got jumped by a Spit, upon witch I dived while being shot at. Fps just plunched instantly to 30fps, and the entire system became very laggy.

Certainly feels like the memory is taking a hammering, either branch.

DCS/2.1.1.9006 still remains plagued by frequent stutter and game freezes. Simply unplayable to me.

Played for couple of hours and had 3 unrecoverable game freezes.

Below a link to the youtube video of last game freeze as seen by banditcam.

Game simply froze as I was coming in for landing. Perhaps something like ~60 sec game freeze. Then timeout and I was kicked out from the server.

Logs attached.

Please fix.

Another example of game freeze;

Single player mission. Furball, merge w a spit, look back and pull up....

bang! Unrecoverable game freeze.

Stayed frozen >2 minutes. DCS shown as not responding in windows task manager / resource monitor.

Game freeze occured within few minutes in to the mission.

Mission Time stamp (RCtrl+Pause) showed: 161.856 during freeze.

Had to kill DCS from the task manager.

Gameplay as captured by nvidia shadow play;

Mission file used, my in game settings, Nvidia Control Panel settings, logs inc. dxdiag attached.

Dear ED, are you aware of these game freeze problems?

are you investigating these problems?

are you able to reproduce these problems?

is there any estimated time schedule for fixing these problems?

is there any more information that you would like to get from us players or any additional tests that you would suggest us to do?????

On this topic contributed so many unhappy users.

I ask ED to comment to such a serious error.

They would tell You that this is a alpha version and issues certainly will exist.

One can then argue whether it´s good to release stuff fo the public via early acces, when the module isn¨t more mature.

In my personal eyes, it´s kind of bad, since You get tired of the map before it becomes playable - just my opinion.

I personally have posted 14 times my logs of the issue occurring to me on this very thread.

I have posted my settings, dx diag, frame rate analysis, screen shots, videos, descriptions of my configuration and steps I have taken trying to mitigate this problem.

I have not seen a single response from ED here.

I'm not frustrated with the Normandy map. I know it is alpha. I'm frustrated with ED communication with the community. If the issue is know, they should acknowledge it, say they can reproduce it and are working on it. If the issue is unclear to them, they should acknowledge it and ask for further logs / descriptions of the problem.

I was on Burning Skies server today for about and hour. Had game freeze twice causing a disconnect during a dogfight. I have the logs, MSI Afterburner screen shot and some video, but I'm not bothering to post that stuff here as there has not been any kind of acknowledgement from EDs side for my previous reports. I'll just say; The problem is still there. Please fix it!

I understand your frustration. I have reported this and other issues, and get no useful response from ED. Almost always hardware is blamed rather than issues with DCS.

As you say, all that is required is a simple statement to say ‘we are aware of this issue and are working towards a solution’.

Ah, finally! After tens, if not hundreds of crashed and game freezes, I finally managed to benefit from one....

Thank you ED for making this Spitfire pilots game freeze, so I could bag him :thumbup::megalol::megalol:

Just for the record. I'm still having these problems.

Game freeze with DCS/2.1.1.9429 (x86_64; Windows/10.0.15063)

Typically I get a complete game freeze about 1 - 2 times per 1 hour of flying in Normandy.

Attached are my logs, dxdiag, screengrab from MSI Afterburner showing 2.5 minutes game freeze.

Then the Burning Skies server timed out and I was thrown out of the game.

Included is also HWInfo64 sensor log during the gameplay. I have not been able to identify anything wrong in there with my system.

The logs also include a DCS Crashdump from earlier today;

No improvement since the last repair. Even noticed that sometimes when you restart the mission by pressing shift + R will pop up a window to confirm once again releases the key for Normandy 1944 the module, then the game always freezes.

freezes are still happening for me too after the latest update, and it's still random. Had one CTD that I posted logs for in another thread because it's the first actual CTD i've encountered while in flight since 2.1 and normandy. I'm kind of under the impression that logs alone aren't going to point this out as the game doesn't CTD, it's just freezing.

  • 3 weeks later...

just a short update;

I still have the game stutter and complete game FREEZE issue.

Easily couple of times per hour. Just fly some acrobatics and look around (like during a dog fight).

Does not matter what settings, single player or multiplayer, empty map or map with action. Very frustrating.

Logs attached. In this example some stutter, then complete game freeze. Had to kill DCS from task manager. Burning Skies server.

I have noticed that stutters just go away after a few minutes of flight...just want to make you know it. When I start the mission I have some stuttering, after a few minutes when everything is mostly loaded it runs great.

Just my2cents...

I have the feeling that the stutters & game freeze are somehow related to map resources loading. It feels like there would be different levels of detail for map resources. Often after taking off, I get some minor stutters, especially if I look around as I gain altitude. This is kind of annoying, but not really a problem atm. Then it kind of evens out and runs fine. I fly a bit gaining altitude, everything is running fine. After a while I have flown to a different area of the map and start some aerobatics or a dog fight or attacking ground targets or pretty much anything that involves rapid view changes / zoom level changes / altitude changes / course changes, I get some stutters. Sometimes a complete game freeze.

So, yes, sometimes I just get some stutter and then it runs just fine. Kind of feels like it has loaded some map resources and is then running fine again.... BUT, then again after a while it has to load something else and I get stutters again. Sometimes a complete game freeze.

In general, I feel I get a major stutter or a complete game freeze couple of times per hour, which pretty much takes all the fun out of this game for me.

Just hoping the devs are aware of the issue, can reproduce it and will fix it.

If anybody has any meaningful suggestions, please let me know.

I'm sorry for your problems guys :cry:, but I can guarrantee you that I'm not having such severe issues by any means. If your game crashes after a while of flying, probably is due to some other problem in your system...I have been HOURS flying, editing, changing configurations and had barely had a couple of app crashed since the 2.1 first day so make sure your system is running fine.

Also, in my case, once I have been flying for a while, I NEVER have stutter again, even reloading the mission is perfectly fine since first second. Don't know what are your system specs, but you should know that DCS needs some computer power to run correctly. I have a quite powerful system and have no problems running maxed out (and I mean maxed out except MSAA at zero, no DoF and no dirts in the lens).

Something that might be giving you problems is that DCS consumes a HUGE amount of PAGE FILE!, so dont dare to disable it!!!!!, just NEVER disable windows page file no tmatter how much ram you own and let windows to alocate automaticly the amount of memory, defrag your disks, close other apps running at the same time and make sure you LeftALT+Enter to fullscreen... that's my advice. :)

Thanks for the suggestions :thumbup:

Any good ideas how to test my system stability for DCS 2.1?

I have run a whole bunch of generic benchmarks and stress tests including at least;

- Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Stress Test over night

- couple of hours AIDA64

- couple of hours Prime 95

- Memtest 86 and Windows Memory test

- Unigine Heaven, 3DMark Fire Strike and Time spy

- Cristal Disk benchmark

I actually run XTU Memory Stress test, AIDA64, Unigine Heaven and CristallDiskMark together and they all run fine.

Also DCS 1.5.7 runs fine (and IL-2 BoS, WarThunder, Acetto Corsa, GTA 5, DayZ,....)

It's unfortunately DCS 2.1 that is giving me gray hair. I typically get a complete game freeze or two in one hour of gameplay.

Turn down your preload form 150,000, to at least 55,000

Thanks, perhaps I'll give an another try to reduced preload radius. I have tried it earlier and it did not help. Hell, I've tried complete potato settings w 720p resolution and I can still get the game freeze.

I'm currently using settings for Normandy for GTX 1070 thread https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=188477 with some adaptions to my g-sync 3440x1440 monitor.

Anyhow, attached is an another log from DCS 2.1.1 Normandy crash;

Wow, thats a hell of a good testing tools mate, pretty much all good test soft is there so cant give you any more info you don't know buddy...

About your system well, its a top notch one you should be able to play normandy maxed out with 2 or 4x MSAA at 1440p no problems so something might be wrong with your installation and/or windows if other titles runs fine...try installing dcs in other path or different disk (just copy-paste the installation and run it) or make sure there is no driver issues nor some software interfering with dcs which may cause the crash...I know its a pain in the neck but you will have to analize everything (hardware, windows, system errors, antiviruses, drivers, disk,etc) everytime you have a crash anf look for the culprit...hope you can fix it buddy!

DCS update from today DCS/2.1.1.10527 (x86_64; Windows/10.0.15063)

nVidia drivers from couple of days ago 387.92

The game freeze problem still occurring :(

I run my little single player Normandy furball mission (attached) 9 times and every time I got a complete game freeze within ~15-20 minutes. Couple of times very fast within just couple of minutes of flying.

During testing I changed my setup as follows;

- dcs update to 2.1.1.10527...game freeze

- DisplayDriverUninstaller and re-install of nVidia drivers 387.92, dcs_updater cleanup, repair and update...game freeze

- nvidia max pre-render frames to 4...game freeze

- nvidia max pre-render frames back to 1, disable g-synch....game freeze

- removed my OC CPU i7-4790K 4.8GHz & gtx1080Ti 2000MHz to defaults. Load MB BIOS Optimal Defaults (+disable intel integrated graphics)....game freeze

- enabled g-synch again. Removed and disconnected power to my extra HDD, DVD drive and extra SSD. Now only my Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD connected to my system....game freeze

- disconnected TrackIR. Using Joystick hat switch for looking arround....game freeze

- disconnected my pedals, throttle quadrant, only MS Sidewinder II FFB stick, keyboard and mouse connected to my PC USB...game freeze

earlier I have done among other things;

- complete windows re-install

- complete DCS 2.1 re-install (incl. downloading)

- complete windows and DCS re-install on a different SSD drive

- changed my motherboard

- tried a different graphics card (Gigabyte GTX980 windforce) instead of my current GTX 1080Ti

- flew around only with keyboard and mouse, no USB flight controllers connected to my PC

- tried a different monitor (BenQ XL2411z w 1920x1080 resolution)

- I tried under-clocking my CPU to 3.8GHz or 3.6 GHz and GPU by 100, 150 or 200MHz.

nothing seems to help. This game just keeps freezing on me. Other games incl. DCS 1.5.7 does not have this problem.

To me this is some kind of DCS 2.1 game engine / graphics engine freeze.

One day last week I run a test where I run DCS in windowed mode 1920x1080. Next to DCS I had Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 running in windowed mode 1280x960. It all fits nicely on my 3440x1440 display.

The both of them were running fine. I could play DCS normally and Heaven Benchmark was running on the window next to it....until my typical DCS game freeze occurred. As DCS froze up, the Heaven Benchmark just kept running and now it was getting much better fps as it did not have to share the GPU resources with DCS.

That all means to me; it's not my PC, it's DCS 2.1 graphics engine that is the problem.

...but then again, there are people that do not have this game freeze problem. I wish I could find out WTF it is?! ...and get DCS 2.1 running stably also for me.

One more note;

sometimes when DCS 2.1 freezes it is shown as "not responding" in windows task manager.

sometimes it is shown as "running" in the task manager.

When the game is frozen, but shown as "running" in the task manager, I still have the yellow cross mouse cursor and it keep moving as I move the mouse....and it still keeps updating the Frame rate counter + service info ("LCtrl+Pause" to enable).about every 4 seconds.

I'm attaching 5 screenshots taken in this state.

-FPS is always zero

- Time is always the same

- but some service info parameters for example Frame Time, Update, Main, Simulation and Video mem,.... are changing.

no idea what all those parameters mean, but something is still clearly running in DCS game engine and able to display this changing info, but the main graphics engine is not providing new frames to the graphics card. When this game freeze occurs, my graphics card load basically drops to zero.

That really sucks. I uninstalled Normandy and play in NTTR and 1.5.6 for the time being. Normandy has issues, it's not just you.

The only thing I can think of is set everything back to default, use the latest drivers and don't use Nvidia to override the graphics in DCS, just use DCS settings and set DCS priority to 'High' in Task manager.

Also check what I did here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=193126

Wish you luck

I'm definitely seeing an improvement in stuttering issues I had with a Omaha Beach Mission I was building. It had the every second or so stutter and was absolutely unplayable but now runs stutter-free. The air defense radar issue mentioned in changelog may have been the cause in this case. Guess I can forge ahead and finish mission now.:thumbup:
