The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.

Belsimtek - Development F-5E Tiger II

Continuing working on the “famous” fighters’ line, we are especially concerned about game balance in DCS World. The best rival for the beloved by users MiG-21bis is an American fighter F-5E Tiger II, developed by the Northrop in the second half of the last century.

Consistently caring about the quality of the released product, which is reflected in the “similarity” between the developed module and the real airplane, our specialists, in their work, are trying to only use available documentary data of the original airplane.

Undoubtedly, a wide range of weapons from guided air-to-air missiles to various air-to-ground armament (unguided rockets, various bombs and cluster munitions) and two built-in 30-mm cannons will impress any fan of aviation battles. Professional flight model, implemented as close as possible to the real airplane in DCS World will allow aviation fans to enjoy flying the aircraft.

In the following updates, we are planning to inform our virtual pilots about development progress of this fighter for DCS World.

F-5E Tiger II. The armament that is planned to develop

The light tactical fighter F-5E Tiger II is developed primarily for air combat with enemy fighters, bombers, reconnaissance planes, and helicopters. Two 20-mm caliber cannons with 280 rounds per barrel and two air-to-air heat-seeking missiles AIM-9 can be used for this task.

At the same time, capabilities of onboard weapon systems and the presence of five hardpoints, allow employment of unguided and guided (external laser source) bombs, cluster bombs and unguided rockets in airstrike missions.

The following armament is planned to be available for the player:

  • 1. Two 20-mm caliber M-39A3 cannons with rate of fire of 1500-1700 rounds per minute and ammunition of 280 rounds per gun;
    2. Two heat-seeking missiles (AIM-9B or AIM-9P) (currently we are considering these versions);

    3. Unguided bombs:

  • 5x Mk-82
  • 3x Mk-83
  • 1x Mk-84
  • 5x Mk-82 Snakeye
  • 5x M-117
  • MER-5 5x Mk-82
  • MER-5 5x Mk-82 Snakeye;

    4. Cluster bombs:

  • 5xCBU-52B;

    5. Guided bombs:

  • 4x GBU-12 (buddy lasing or ground laser designator);

    6. Unguided rockets:

  • 4x LAU-61 (x19) (LAU-3 or LAU-60 could be added later)
  • 4x LAU-68 (x7);

    7. Flare dispenser:

  • SUU-25C

All the items, mentioned above, at this moment, have different status of readiness, but we are already sure that it will be a very interesting and playable module!

  • All the aircraft systems are accurately simulated in high detail;
  • The new engine compressor model is implemented based on accurate blade loads calculation. The new model provides simulation of the compressor guiding unit functioning and the expanded range of engine operation modes (high and low compressor stalls, compressor operating in windmill mode);
  • The radar, optical sight, jettison system, possibility of gun firing, launching of air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground rocket firing, flare and chaff ejection are implemented into the model of the aircraft’s weapon system. All the above-mentioned items are now operating properly;

    The flight model: operational range of altitude and speed, acceleration with various payloads and G loads (in sustained turns and at maximum angles-of-attack) are tuned basing

  • on available information on the flight dynamics of the real aircraft; the model behavior at critical angles-of-attack (stalling) and post-stall behaviour (post-stall gyrations and spins) in general correspond to the descriptions in the real aircraft documents;
  • Flight manual in Russian for the game module is developed.

    In order to present this module in the Early Access version, we are to complete the following items:

  • make proper adjustments of operation of certain aircraft systems (for example, to adjust pump capacity, hydraulic fluid mass-flow rates, electric grid loads, etc.);
  • translate the Flight manual into English for English-speaking users. We try to take into account all our mistakes made during the development of the previous modules. At this stage quality translation and localization of the game Manual for English-speaking users is the most significant problem;
  • develop the Quick Start manuals in Russian and in English based on the complete Flight manuals in both languages.

Belsimtek News

After the successful, final release of the DCS: F-86 Sabre and DCS: MiG-15bis modules, the Belsimtek team is now focused on bringing DCS: F-5E Tiger II to Early Access within the next month. In the meantime, Belsimtek continues to edit the F-86F Sabre English manual and prepare DCS: Mi-8MTV2 for its final release.

DCS: F-5E Tiger II Progress Update

F-5E-1.jpg

  • The external model is complete and includes several well-known color schemes.
  • The 3D cockpit is complete.
  • All aircraft systems are accurately simulated in high detail.
  • A new engine compressor model has been implemented based on accurate blade load calculations. The new model provides a very accurate simulation of compressor guiding unit functionality and an expanded range of engine operation modes (high and low compressor stalls and compressor operating in windmill mode).
  • The radar, optical sight, jettison system, gun use, launching of air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground rocket use, and flare and chaff countermeasures are integrated into the model and the aircraft's Weapon Control System (WCS). All the above-mentioned items are now operating as described in F-5E operations manuals.
  • The Professional Flight Model (PFM): operational range of altitude and airspeed, acceleration with various payloads and G loads (in sustained turns and at maximum angles-of-attack) are tuned based on available data of the flight dynamics of the real aircraft; the model behavior at critical angles-of-attack (stalling) and post-stall behavior (post-stall gyrations and spins) now match descriptions of the real aircraft.
  • Flight manual in Russian has been written.

    F-5E-2.jpg

    In order to present this module in for Early Access, several items will be in development during the Early Access period:

  • Adjustments to the operation of certain aircraft systems (for example: adjustment to pump capacity, hydraulic fluid mass-flow rates, electric grid loads, etc.)
  • Translation the flight manual to English. We take into account our mistakes during the development of previous modules.
    Creation of the Quick Start manuals for both Russian and in English, based on the complete flight manuals.
