[NO BUG] Autopilot Issues

Wingmate

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am unable to engage the autopilot for more than a second or two. Every time I try to engage it with the Autopilot Reference / Nosewheel Steering button either nothing will happen or it will turn on for a very short time before turning off again, both the A/P REF light and the actual autopilot input reflect this. I have tried mapping other buttons to this and it has no effect. All my SAS channels are turned on and I am attempting to engage it during straight and level flight.

I have tried this from hot start and spawning in the air on the Caucasus, Persian Gulf, and Nevada. I will try cold and dark later today.

I have also tried reinstalling the F-14 to no effect.

this sounds like an input issue to me. that for some reason your autopilot toggle input gets registered and turns it off, unless you are flying outside of parameters. could you share a video and a track please?

I edited your comment so that the video shows you need only this part: "9xSFVM5ndqU" of the youtube link..

I see what you mean. It looks like something is engaging your stick input. do you have any deadzones set?

on a sidenote: AP should not be operated above 400kts, depending on alt I find it ok till 450.

Thanks for editing the comment so the video shows. I have deadzones set of 5 pitch, 8 roll, and 5 yaw, when I am hands off there is no input from the stick or pedals.

wow ok, those are extremely high, I use 2 to 4 (rudder) max. something however seems to be sending inputs. are you running a joystick software? some macros maybe? else I see no other explanation.

Possibly try unplugging the joystick and doing a short free flight using keyboard control and see if the AP stays engaged -might help narrow down the issue

The deadzones are because there is a lot of slop in the stick (an early X55) and the detent in my rudder pedals is nearly unnoticeable at this point. I am not running any joystick software and have no macros set. In the new video I use only trim and have my control indicator showing unable to engage ap at all, part way through I unmap the pitch and roll axis from the joystick and using only keyboard am still unable to engage ap this time. I appreciate all the help.

i never knew the ap wouldnt work above 400 knots, learn something every day

it works also above 600, but try it and you will see the effect. it is not recommended. I use it till around 450ish

Could you try the following please: turn off your PC. unplug your rudder pedals and the x55, both throttle and stick. restart pc without it and run dcs. start the insta flight mission and engage AP with your mouse engage plus alt hold and then use the keyboard command to press the AP reference / nosewheel button. [if it works, you can retry with each 1 of the devices, and see which one produces a faulty input. If none makes an effect, it is something else of course.]

Thanks.

I just tried doing this, using the keyboard by itself worked but I had issues with both rudder pedals, and HOTAS, to check further I dug my old X52 Pro out and encountered the same issue with it.

Thanks.

ok, thanks for tying it. I want to be careful, but I think this is definitely a cross input issue then, and from all what you said I would suggest that it is your rudder pedals. sorry that you experience these issues.

Thanks for all the help Mike. I reinstalled DCS completely today and so far have had no more issues, I was hoping to avoid redownloading 140gbs but figured it was worth a shot. Still have no idea what was causing it but it seems it was with the base game rather than the F-14.

Thanks again.

Ok, but that is actually good news, because broken peripherals are usually a costly fix. Glad it works again!

ive noticed a quirk/bug with the ap.

if i flip the switches for alt hold and switch ap on (regardless of pressing nosewheel button) when im on the ground (possibly in the air with the gear down too but im not 100% on that) then the ap wont work at all for that flight no matter what i do.

also is it normal for the ap to act like fbw when switched on but not activated? i use it every flight for that reason lol, stops the plane porpoising and means i dont have to trim out apart from landing

  • 2 weeks later...

I also have an X-55 so I would ask if you have a powered USB hub for the throttle quadrant?

I only ask as I had issues with mine when I first bought it and using a powered USB hub solved the issue of random control inputs.

I'm not saying that's what's causing the problem but I thought it worth mentioning.

Yes aututrim is not something we ever intended with the Tomcat hence it is very likely to cause issues.

As for the FBW behaviour of AP engaged but not activated: that is correct.
