New Anti-aliasing Option - TAA

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I would like to see the ED team work on some new anti-aliasing options, to include TAA. This gives the end-user another option to choose along with MSAA and SMAA. TAA obviously softens the image, but perhaps with a sharpness filter we can gain some performance back and still have DCS look amazing?

MSAA is too much of an FPS killer for most.

Cheers

I'm running a lower-spec computer than either of yours , and i run 1.5 SSAA , and 2x MSAA . This gets rid of most of the shimmering .

9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2

It's always nice to have the option there.

My computer is pretty low spec and MSAA is definitely more than it can handle, but with SSAA 1.5x and nvidia FXAA it looks pretty good and still keeps my fps around 30.

Yeah , i should have mentioned that i run those AA specs while not breaking Vsync low everwhere except Dubai , and while keeping some reserves for Cpu-Gpu headroom .

With a 2080Ti?

I run a 4K monitor on that as well and can keep 60fps even over Las Vegas. All max settings and 2x MSAA

On an empty map...sure.

What happens in a mission, with other aircraft and ground vehicles?

What is your FPS sitting on the ramp or carrier deck with several aircraft nearby?

Unless the 2080 Ti is significantly more powerful than the 1080 Ti, I don't think you could maintain 60 FPS in all situations with high graphic settings.

With a 1440p monitor, I have shadows low, terrain shadows flat, civ traffic off, MSAA 2x, everything else max...my FPS will dip below 60 in any aircraft on a busy ramp or carrier deck. Flying over Las Vegas or Persian Gulf cities, FPS will drop into the 60's...occasionally into the 50's with the Tomcat. This is without even running a mission of any sort.

On my system, MSAA seems to be "free" as I don't see any increase in FPS with it off. I do see a drop in FPS with aliasing higher that MSAA 2x or SSAA 1.5 though.

A 2080Ti runs any game including DCS very well in 2160p. Well enough that I haven’t needed to test settings, I just have them all maxed. With a few exceptions. SSAA is obviously Off in 4K

I find turning Vsync Off in-game and running “Fast” in Nvidia CP works more smoothly. I’m currently playing the M-2000C Red Flag and the Spitfire Big Show campaigns without any trouble.

Situations like the carrier deck are probably CPU bound and therefore your GPU or AA settings won’t matter. I had a 1080Ti prior and again it ran DCS in 4K really well. It’s the CPU that is the bottleneck in many situations. That 9700K should be a champ in that regard as well.

Really? I've been using TAA exclusively on games that support it (R6 Seige, CoD:MW, RDR2) and the image looks amazing. No jagged edges and no shimmering at all. :)

i agree. TAA looks very, very good, with comparatibely low impact on performance.

i think, however, that it is exclusive to nvidia gpus, which might be a consideration for ED.

i would be very happy, if we could at least get SMAA: minimal performance impact, easy to implement, looks decent, can look very good in combinations with small amounts of SSAA or MSAA.

Blurring of the entire image is not for flight simulators solution, how to get rid of jagged/shimmering effect.

Here are the results I get in some different scenarios and my settings. Even the lowest one, the Nevada Cold & Dark feels smooth with the Nvidia Fast Vsync though. That situation is clearly CPU limited because turning AA off has no effect on the FPS.

Why do you keep the PRELOAD RADIUS to 60000 instead maximum ?

Hmmm. I don’t know. Maybe I should change that. Does it affect performance at all or just load time?

Temperal AA is bad for anything that requires clear text and clear edges,

TAA also uses more GPU resources than originally projected.
