Was I an idiot to buy the Normandy Map?

Recommended Posts

All, I have just spent the best part of £50 on the Normandy Map and Assets pack. But I'm not entirely sure why! There doesn't seem to be any kind of missions with it or campaigns. Was I foolish or naive to think it would come with some?

Maybe. :-D

You always need a aircraft module to do any sort of mission or campaign. So, for which aircraft would you expect to come with a map? Yes, Normandy ... WWII piston warbirds, right? But still, the priciple stands: for which one? Bf109? Fw190? Spit? Mustang? All of them?? You see the dilemma?

You can use other peoples missions or write your own or join MP servers, as for the map I find it great. ;)

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

I do hope to enjoy this map. Can you recommend any missions for a novice like myself.

Have you not come across the Epsom campaign for the Spitfire, or Op Charnwood for the P-51D?

To say the Normandy map has no campaigns misses completely the well written, and immersive stuff that has been written specifically for the Normandy theatre.

The assets pack contains some excellently modelled armour too, and with a little imagination, and some time spent learning the ins and outs of mission writing mean you have infinite possibilities. Add to that the B-17, FW-190D and Bf-109K, and you have the ingredients needed for re-creating the biggest, and most costly air campaign ever fought over European skies.

Frankly guys you need to get a reality check!

No maps come with missions or campaigns. I assume that you are flying WWII a/c?

The Epsom campaign was mentioned, also Charnwood is another great paid campaign.

Reflected has made some great free missions that are not campaigns but have a randomized mission type and enemy which makes them enjoyable and replayability is high. They're available in the user downloads or by searching the missions thread.

Actually, the missions, training and built-in campaigns came with the aircrafts rather than with the maps ... tough I admit that most aircraft developers only bother to provide missions for the older Maps (Caucaso & Nevada).

However, many aircrafts at least do provide simple Instant Action Missions for Normandy: TF51 (2 missions), Su-25T (6), Spitfire (5), P51 (5), L39 (4), Blackshark 2 (4), Hawk (9), Su-33 (9), Fw190 (5), C-101 (5), Bf109 (5), Viggen (3) and A-10C (7)

The Su-33 is the most blessed:

Was there any need for that line really ?!

But yes this is a reality check hence why I'm questioning if I've been naive. And as a novice that all sounds rather daunting. I'm going to chip away with the mustang until I feel the need to move on and progress. It would have been nice to have some WW2 based tutorial missions to get to grips with planes of that era. I've only got A10c experience so far.

+1 for the Charnwood/ Epsom campaigns. One of the most immersive sim experiences I've had, well worth every penny!

DCS campaigns are way too hard for casual simmers. I have bought three of them so far, and I haven’t completed a single mission. So money wasted for me. :D

Mostly you just fly rather freely, and if you survive, you can progress to the next mission. They don't have objectives such as "destroy x number of planes/ tanks/ whatever".

Yes, IF you survive. It only needs one 109, and it’ll shoot me down every time..

The purchase of Normandy has had many asking similar questions to be honest. The thread has answered the OPs main question of course concerning campaigns.

However, the OP also speaks to the fact that Normandy as a map still requires a lot of development. ED are already answering this with updates and we're all looking forward to this continuing.

Also as noted, improvements to the WW2 airframe modules have a role to play in extracting enjoyment on the map itself.

SP campaigns are generally good though it must be said that as the modules and map improvements get implemented, the experience of these campaigns may change also.

All in all, from a MP perspective, Normandy has not been a common server choice map but like said already, hopefully this trend will change with ED's current WW2 focus which is producing results already.

...But fixing the cartoonish (too bright) colors, trees, ground etc, in Normandy Map cant be "rocketsience"... I hope that is priority no.1 for the guys at ED. And that soon, very soon it will be solved.

Regards

P.

Hmm...Maybe its just me but It does not look too cartoonish to me but kinda the opposite I find it the most realistic looking map .

Maybe its a screen or its settings.

I am playing on a big screen "high end"(used to be in 2011 lol) plasma TV and the colors are almost feels the same I can see in real life flying above a lush forest and green fields.

My nephew has a 120HZ expensive (recent tech) led gaming screen and its colortones just looks aweful to me compared to this TV . So who knows .

As a VR user love the map, no shortage of things to do, but yes trees are the worst thing about the map. I think, they have improved (Did I imagine that?) but they are still too bright and they flicker around all over the place making me very glad when I get high enough to no longer see them, after which the map is gorgeous!
