Forum Warning Guidelines Discussion

Recommended Posts

Minor and major vulgar words and bad language? Three categories?

Minor spamminig?

Minor and major inappropriate conduct?

Details on these various levels of bad language, spamming, conduct, etc. need to be spelled out.

EDIT:

The post a user is warned about needs to be referenced and quoted in the warning. If the post was deleted and a warning was issued then the user has no way of knowing what post, or content therein, caused the warning.

On one hand they are basically all against the rules, so I assume they aren't desired on the forum no matter the severity. Looking at it this way, what is most important to be made clear is the minimum offense.

On the other hand, when it comes to disputing infraction points, having all the levels well defined is necessary, but it could also lead to people "aiming" for infractions they can get away with without getting too harshly punished.

I agree.

Might be redundant.

• Advertising other games or products

What's advertising and what is not? "Hey guys, new game is out, anyone plays it?" is allowed or not?

This is somewhat confusing:

- Somebody makes thread for ArmA, locked because it doesn't belong here.

- FSX, lock, doesn't belong here.

- There is also Kerbal Space Program thread, which is fine, even though it does not belong here just like FSX. Or does it? What about Assetto Corsa or threads discussing many other games?

- We do have pinned "(news only)" threads for many games though... if I post there, am I not advertising other products? Or maybe it's allowed in those threads but then...

- If I make a new thread about a game, who decides if it'll get locked because it does not belong here? Or if it's OK and we can have a discussion? Or if it's OK but only for news? Or if I should get banned?

Might be redundant.

Copyrighted materal could be a PDF of a book someone found online, some document that shouldnt be posted on the forums as they dont have rights to do so, or it was copied without the owners knowledge.

Advocating piracy is providing links to cracks, or install files, or links on how to get around protected software etc...

so they are similar, but not the same.

What's advertising and what is not? "Hey guys, new game is out, anyone plays it?" is allowed or not?

The problem with discussing other games is many times they result in people here trashing other developers. That, believe it or not, is the biggest reason they dont want other games discussed here. They dont want to have to be asked by another dev why they allow people to trash their software on their boards as it has no relavance to ED.

News and such is fine, announcing a new game and showing updates it are fine, but getting into troubleshooting (which I hope people understand really has no place here) tips and tricks, and reviews just cant happen here.

Word Advertising has been removed, I agree its a little confusing.

The accumulated number of points determines the "level" and thus the punishment, I understand that. But is it really intentional that the listed violations have a fixed minimum point penalty assigned to it?

Example (lvl 2): are mods forced to give at least 11 points for a slipped vulgar word (i.e. describing feces - something that, i'd bet, everyone is guilty of irl on occassion ;o) ... and thus resulting in an insta-1-day ban?

So tell me how you accidentally type in a vulgar word? Re-read your post before hitting submit. You know what is right and what is wrong. If you have any doubts, PM a mod team member before using that word.

By not paying the approriate amount of attention. Sometimes you just chat away - we are not writing essays that are proof read by some editor.

But anyhow, that was not really my point - my question remains, is it intentional/did I understand it right that violations have a minimum point penalty assigned? Mods do have some leeway when handing out points, but they are forced to hand out at least that minimum, according to the level of the infraction?

That's a poor excuse... be more careful what you type. Its very simple. I have never sworn in front of my mom, at work I swear like a sailor... its very easy to control.

IMHO, if there is a limit in the warning box preventing a proper explanation of the infraction then a PM containing an explanation should accompany a warning.

I was given a 1.3 Violation on 4/9/15… still have no inkling why. Nevertheless it states that it is a lvl 2. 20 percent warning that expires on 10/6/2015 which is a six month warning before it terminates. My question is that it states under the new Warning and Ban guidelines that it should expire in 3 months from the original warning. Will these timelines be adjusted on user accounts? I’m trying to be cautious what I say here so I do not get any additional warnings added on, nonetheless I am a bit curious and perplexed by these new rules and how they affect older warnings.

No I think that is misleading, we can only give warnings in increments of 10... so 10, or 20, 30, etc...

Allright. (that puts things into a new(ish) perspective - for me at least.)

With that newly gained perspective, I agree, it will be easy to control from now on.

Again, if you ever have questions about the warnings, you can PM a mod. But your wanring log generally contains what you need to know. if you didnt notice it right away, and you forgot... PM a mod. If you want to see the text of your deleted message... PM me.

I agree... mostly. I have no problem controlling myself (and I come from the region where profanity is very much a cultural thing lol), but by definition (not an linguist though!), vulgar is anything from damn to f-word. Yet I see a great difference between such words. So, are there going to be bans for anything that's on the lowest end of that spectrum and in the real word frowned upon only in kindergarten? :)

Ask. Its simple if you are unsure if its unacceptable, just ask. I think damn will slide... its mostly asking for common sense.

I am not sure whether I understood correctly how those points accumulate, so just to clarify:

A user replies to a post from Wags about a new FC3 module, and I tell him about how much better the cockpit of the A-10C is. That's kinda off-topic of course, so I get 10%

Five days later someone posts about a new Star Citizen Ship (considered news) in the appropriate thread and I respond With something like: "Yeah, new update!" (gets me 30% because not news)

So I created two posts that are... not THAT severe IMO, and I get banned for two weeks? To me that sounds pretty harsh, at least on first glance.

Oh, and this point:

Product feedback that is abusive, insulting or condescending
I hope that you guys aren't easily insulted or feel condescended to. Otherwise it will be really hard to judge whether to post any negative points.

Anyway, nice to see some more concrete rules, I guess that makes some things easier for all of us.

Until now I was - in most cases at least - pretty happy with how moderation in these forums worked. I hope you won't change too much.

Lvl5. – Immediately perma-ban (Username and IP ban)

I think it is a bad idea to ban IP too. These days end-users only rarely have static public IP. Mostly it is still public but dynamic (assigned randomly from ISP-pool by DHCP-server) or even one from private IP-space with carrier-grade NAT implemented (traffic of the whole ISP is routed through a few public-IPs).

If you ban IP, you might ban a few innocent users too (while original offender could easily find way to get different IP). I understand you want to get rid of some users, but banning IP might do more harm than good...

Most people here are well aware of what they post, both good and bad... if you get alot of warnings, then you should pay attention to this, if you dont know why you get a lot of warnings, PM me or another mod. If you dont get a lot of warnings, or none at all, you really dont need to stress this at all, you already get it.

This isnt really new, its just being more transparent, most of this stuff we have already been doing. We just thought it would be good to share how we look at posts and such.

I guess I'm ok with most of the rules, because AFAIK I never got a warning. I always try to be constructive and friendly.

I just wondered if things will change because there are some things on the list I have certainly done in the past without ever getting a warning.

I cant stress enough, if you have a concern about something you are about to post, PM me or others... but just use good judgement, if you have no warnings, you probably have that figured out already :) Mistakes happen too, we can work with people, we arent trying to find more ways to make peoples lives miserable, this is more to help them what the rules are, how they are enforced and how they can contribute to the community in a respectful and constructive manner. There are other forums out there if you want to be mean and disrespectful :)

I am curious to know how posts like THIS will be handled in the future when the initial post is appropriate but the the content of the video is not.

A warning that the content may contain adult language would/should be fine... if the video contains anything worse than that, it probably breaks numerous rules and doesnt belong here.

SO post a warning if your vid uses poor language and it should be fine, if you have any doubts... again, feel free to ask me or other mods :)
