GTX1080 TI 11GB vs Radeon 7 16GB on VR performance

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know for VR purposes, how much the VRAM matters on the GPU because the 2070 is an 8GB card. I want to see how much difference it makes when gaming on VR with an older card like a 1080 TI which is 11GB vs something new like 2070 which is 8 or even Radeon 7 which is 16GB.

My Dedicated GPU Memory Usage in the task manager is generally about 8.5GB just loading into a Quick Start mission.. so yeah. 1080Ti Strix + Rift S

Could be an explanation for why the Vega -- even the 56 -- is able to hold its own in DCS, why the 5700 may not be all that (although I'll bet it does OK for the money) and the VII might be pretty good. Just needs to come down a little more in price because the 2070S is probably going to be a very good GPU for DCS. The 1080 is a known quantity and if the 2070S can outrun it for $500, that's gonna be hard to beat

Hek , it's sposta be 1080ti-ish performance-wise . Be interesting to see the partner cards for the 5700xt tho . I suspect there is a beast in there waiting to be unleashed .

EDIT In fact , i just watched a vid on YouTube by Benchmark PC Tech , and the Super went toe-to-toe with the 1080ti . So not "ish" performance , but same . I was particularly surprised at how well it compared in 4k , which i use (absent better info) as a predictor of relative VR performance .

I regularly see the 11gb on my 1080ti maxed out in MP servers. I cant say if the extra 3gb the 1080ti offers over the 2080 makes much difference but I can say it does get used. EVGA has a great warranty program so picking up a used 450$ 1080ti with a few years left on the warranty is hard to beat. As far as the Radeon 7 goes I don't think we have enough data on its VR performance. I only found one review and It doesn't look flattering for team red.

I will add, I fly with a guy that has a AMD setup, (I think) 2700x and Radeon 7 and he says he cant get the VR working smooth enough for his liking. (so 2 strikes?) But then again the 2700x is not the best choice for DCS, so that could be to blame also.

are we sure 4K is the same as VR?

I'm not a Royal :) Obviously 4k is not VR . "Absent better info" means there are not many vr/cards reviews out there . 4k is simply the tested resolution that taxes cards the most , as does vr .

Here is an interesting post

I'd still like to see some more data on the R7, If anyone out there wants to do some testing with their R7 on DCS, Id be happy to run the same tests with same settings. Anyone out there with a R7 and a O+?

I was just looking at GPU load in DCS using HWinfo a couple of hours ago because I had a question about Vram.

In VR with a ss of 1.5, 2xMSAA, most everything on high except for heat blur (low), Shadows (flat), and civil traffic (low). My 1080ti showed 100% GPU load and 78% memory usage. That's 8.5 Gb Vram.
