Red Flag Training Missions - F/A-18C

Recommended Posts

Just downloaded this, and it looks great!

One trivial question though, is it possible to put some kind of mission success message in? Or a score?

Only tried the first mission, but it would be good to get some sort of indication of success - or failure more likely!

In the first mission you will get "mission end" message when parking. Follow the humvee until it stops.

In the other mission you will get it after landing , just before parking.

Thanks for that. The humvee? Didn't see one.

Confused by the NTTR and formation flying mission now.

So, I went on the guided tour of NTTR with my wingman following all waypoints, landed back at Nellis, but no indication of the mission being finished.

What is the condition to get 100 score on this one?

100 score is reached after landing just before parking.

This is how it is supposed to work:

1) after landing at runway 21 Left turn right on taxiway Alpha

2) contact Nellis Ground , you'll be ordered to taxi Foxtrot then park at Foxtrot 135

3) during taxi you'll receive "Mission complete" message - this is when you'll get 100 score

4) park at F135 and shutdown

I know ATC and radio management is not easy at first but it's very rewarding after you get used to it.

Maybe I can make a short video on how it should be done so I can help newcomers to approach this monster :-)

Thanks for that.

I think doing a short video on the ground radio aspect would be useful.

Personally, I don't have issues with radio comms when taking off, in air or landing, but I am confused by the comms on the ground in your missions. Maybe it's because I haven't come across this before, I don't know. Usually, in missions, I get the 'go to parking area' message and there are usually a couple of soldiers and a tanker waiting for me. I park near them and get the 'well done' type message.

In your missions, I am confused as there are messages saying what channel to tune to - and sometimes there are 2 channels simultaneously on the same COMM2 - and there are also messages saying 'press space bar to communicate with xxx' type thing. I find it difficult to know what to do. Should I use the normal COMMS menus, or just press spacebar and don't bother trying the normal ways of communicating? Not sure.

None of this is intended as a criticism as you have done a fantastic job, and this is not a paid-for product. My (and others) main gripe with some campaign/packages is that one can spend an hour flying into 'the situation' and get blown up within seconds, or fail the mission because of some missing protocol.

Maple Leaf's excellent products get round this by providing practice missions for each part of the campaign so that the user doesn't have the frustration as described. You get straight to the heart of the action, are able to practice procedures or techniques before taking on the full mission.

As I said, none of this is intended as criticism of the excellent work you have done, just personal observations.

As I said before, it might seem hard at first, but it's very basic after you get it.

Basically it's just: press Spacebat to interact , follow instructions, go to the next waypoint.

On the ground are instructed to move through taxiways just as IRL. Taxiways have signals like that:

taxiway-direction-sign.jpg

DCS's Nellis AFB might not have a very good signals but you can see the taxiways even on kneeboard.

I'll make a video today or tomorrow.

Thanks. I'm sure it is simple, but I'm still confused!

So, I did the NTTR formation flying again, landed at Nellis, crossed 21 R waited for some instruction to go to F135 parking, it didn't arrive, so I just went there anyway, but no, nothing. Score 0 as always! I don't ever see/hear your step #5 in previous post. How do I contact Nellis ground? There is nothing on the standard 'ground crew' menu re parking.

It happens the same. I Received the message when cross 12L "mission complete!", after following the humwee, but the final score was 0%.

Let me ask again, how do you contact ground in these missions?

Let me ask again, how do you contact ground in these missions?

when you arrive at the last waypoint -> Grab ATIS and select the right information in the F10 menu to contact Approach

around 5nm to Nellis AFB -> contact Tower

After landing -> contact Ground for parking

You have to do all the things listed , in the exact order , otherwise triggers wont work.

If you cant understand from this , please , wait for the video tomorrow.

Thanks, I'm sure we're all looking forward to the video.

As I have said before, I have never had any issues contacting ATC for take off or landing. It's this 'After landing -> contact Ground for parking' bit that I don't get.

Never had to deal with this before, and don't know how to get the 'go to parking F135' type thing.

Thanks for the video. I have not had issues on using the radio triggers before now though. But I could see in this video that I have been taxing to the wrong parking spot.

Please any material on Nellis taxing/parking markings I can familiarize with?

Good job on your missions. I find them very simple, realistic beside the limitation of the sim.

The Hornet in dcs is gradually getting complete,

Would there be full fledged FA-18C campaign/carrier qualification missions from you in the future where all these interesting sensors(datalink etc) and weapons being fused into the hornet would be put to play in missions?

Cheers

The airport diagram is already in the kneeboard , here you can see all the taxiways and many other infos.

For the parking spots you can have a look in the mission editor and F10 map.

For now I planned to create the last mission for this campaign ( "A day over FEBA" ) , adding at least 50 aircrafts ( Red and Blue combined ) with their ATC , Blackjack calls and maybe even a Guard freq.

With that done I can possibly create every Red Flag scenario that can benefit from now toys implemented by ED.

I can also port that with almost all DCS modules ( someone said F5, Tomcat , F16 and F15E ? :-) ).

Carrier qual training? I dont think I'll do something like that.

More probably I can make some standalone combat missions in Caucasus or Persian Gulf using LSO scripts already made by others.

After that I want to create a "Dissimilar Aircraft Combat Training" Campaign for the Tomcat based on the BFM , ACM and BVR mission you have already seen.

We cant have a real "Top Gun" Campaign cause NAS Miramar and NAS Fallon arent in DCS but I think Nellis can do the job!

I've updated the first post with the video on ATC , I also added another one on Emergency landing.

Emergency landing works the same as the other stages , it's available after Departure and you can activate it anytime with F10 menu.

You can contact Emergency ATC at anytime at CH20 on COMM1 and COMM2.

This procedure enables you for direct landing and the escort of emergency trucks.

I got back after a few days away, and gave the NTTR formation mission a go again (and again and again!) and I am still getting nowhere with it.

Thanks for doing the ATC video, but I am no further forward. I don't doubt this is entirely down to me, but...

So, on your video, at 4'00" you see stuff on 'Other' that I don't ever see. Similarly, when on the ground, I don't see any of the items you are showing on the 'Other' menu, and I guess this is my issue. Clearly, if I don't see that, then I don't get the parking instruction. I just get the usual 'Taxi to parking area' from ATC.

All I see is F1. ATC_DECLARE EMERGENCY in 'Other'. This also means I can't acknowledge the ATIS info as that option never shows either.

That rings me a bell. Do you have the latest version of the mission?

Try to download all again and retry.

Anyway, try some other mission and see if this happen also in the them.

EDIT: remember also that in this particular mission , the F-5 Group ( Springfield 1-1 ) is the one that enables you to select ATIS information. This is because you are tasked to fly in formation with that group.

It may sound too obvious but I dont want to exclude anything.

So, what does that mean? I’m flying with the Springfield group.
