Steel Winter

an ongoing series of interconnected missions for Single Player A-10C's & A-10A's

Steel Winter is a series of interconnected single player missions for A-10A and A-10C pilots. This mission was built in Ver 1.5.5 release using the mission editor only, no additional scripting. No mods are required although Starway's Caucasus Textures 2.0 will give you much nicer Winter Scenery.

The Situation:

Our squadron of A-10's are part of a select United States air and ground combat unit that was invited to Russia to participate in a good-will joint training exercise with the Russian military, similar to the USA's Red Flag but fully integrating ground warfare into the training program. Air and ground forces from Germany and The United Kingdom are also represented here for this prestigious event. A few months after our arrival, reports and rumors have come in from various sources and news agencies of a rogue Russian General's attacks on the civilian population and the looting of local towns and cities, even full scale assaults on Russian military units and bases.

After a period of acclimation to the cold climate and feeling confident that we can now work effectively with the Russian forces, this new coalition of the USA, Germany, the UK and Russia has been tasked with locating the General and stopping these brutal attacks on the local population and isolated Russian military units. Hard intel on the General's forces is limited, but he is known to have under his command a division of armored vehicles and tanks and approximately 50 aircraft and helicopters. His troops are loyal and well paid from the spoils stolen from the local towns and cities that have been attacked, and will likely fight to the end.

Our mission is to apprehend the General, alive if possible, to stand trial in a Russian court of law, and to decimate his forces to the point that they disband and are no longer a threat. Reports of attacks and atrocities in the Mozdok area indicate that he has a large presence here and is recruiting from the Russian military units that he has defeated.

Your squadron has been requested at Mozdok Airbase to help drive this rogue General and his forces out of the area. Other coalition forces will be arriving in the next few days so your main objective until they arrive is to maintain control of Mozdok Airbase. Targeting pods for the "C" models were lost en-route to Russia, but we expect them to be found eventually or new ones flown in from the USA. For now we have plenty of IR and TV Mavericks, rockets and cluster munitions, iron bombs and ECM pods.Navigation is simplified using the ATC menu, the MGRS grid system and you will also get direction, by voice, in degrees and distance to a target from a known location.

Kudos to the Voice Actors who provide a unique service by producing recordings to make these missions more fun. Their efforts greatly increase the immersion of the mission. Listen carefully for their announcements as these are your instructions on what to do.

Your Squadron arrived at Mozdok last night greeted by cold overcast weather, light winds and snow. Your A-10's are fueled and on the ramp with a CAS loadout but you will have a short time window to change armament if you want (remember... no targeting pods are available). Get to your aircraft and in your cockpits and wait for an announcment from your new C.O. Rumor has it that one of our Outposts spotted the advancing enemy last night.

Mission 3: The Gauntlet

Mission type: Singleplayer

Filename for alternate (option to end early) A-10A & C mission three: SteelWinterThreeAltVersions.zip (see the included readme for info)

It’s our fourth day at Mozdok airbase and the weather is getting worse. Sorties have been reduced somewhat due to snowstorms and supply problems, but we still fly when conditions allow. We have inflicted much damage to the General’s forces that have attacked us, and are looking forward to going on the offensive as soon as the rest of our assets are in place and our missing equipment arrives. Crates of our equipment, including the TGP’s, turned up in Germany and are one way to us via C-130, estimated arrival at Mozdok later today.

This is a very long mission taking around 2 to 2.75 hours to fully complete, depending on how well you do. You will be notified when the mission is over by the text message "Mission Complete" at the end. If your time is limited, you may want to fly the alternate mission(s).

Yesterday, tanks and armored vehicles of our Multinational Force engaged a buildup of the General’s forces several klicks southeast of Mozdok airbase. The battle is now over and our armor is coming back to Mozdok to repair, rearm and refuel, and to get medical treatment for the wounded.

Mission three will be to escort three Tank Platoons through “The Gauntlet” (the name given to the area just south and east of Mozdok airbase by one of our Tank Commanders). This area is full of natural cover and terrain features that make it perfect for springing ambushes.

I would like to thank all the voice actors again, and welcome a few extraordinary new actors to Steel Winter.

Since we arrived at Mozdok we have beaten back every attack by "The General" and have inflicted severe damage to his land and air forces. It would now seem that he has had enough! Last night a large convoy of his vehicles was spotted leaving Nalchik airbase and another vehicle convoy is, at this moment, departing from Beslan. Scramble to your A-10's that are armed and fueled, and standby for an in-cockpit briefing. "C" models are now equipped with our new found TGP's so use them to locate and takeout any air defenses in the convoys first.

Here's our chance to keep the General from relocating these men and this equipment to another area where he can continue to terrorize the population. With a Predator drone to keep an eye on the two convoys for you, you must destroy every vehicle to complete today's mission. Begin by attacking the Beslan convoy as it is closer, then locate and attack the Nalchik convoy. Beware of the few remaining enemy fighter aircraft. You will have 3 wingmen and one AI F-15C to provide top cover for your attacks. At some point in the mission the F-15, callsign Pontiac, will become available for use with the F-10 menu.

Mission 5: Operation Grand Theft

Mission type: Singleplayer

Filename for A-10C mission five: SteelWinterSingleC-5Ver2.miz

*** You will also have one AI Su-25T in SEAD role if you choose to use it.

It's now Spring and we have transferred to Kutaisi airbase in search of the General. It's taken some time to locate him but we now have good intel that he's hiding out at Kobuleti airbase and in the process of rebuilding and recruiting. Images from one of our Drones show him in posession of a particular Su-34 Fullback Bomber that was recently equipped with a new top secret weapons and avionics package. The Russian military desperately wants that Fullback returned, .... so we're going to steal it for them!

Our task is to attack the enemy forces at Kobuleti and eliminate all threats so one of our transport aircraft can land there. Recon photos show SAM's and AAA vehicles as well as patrolling tanks and armored vehicles at the objective. A few units are stationed in the nearby towns and may try to reinforce Kobuleti airfield as our attack progresses. We will have a C-130 Hercules available to us, on-board will be an SAS Strike Team and two CIA pilots. The mission will consist of 6 phases:

Phase 1. A-10's (or one Su-25T) will attack and destroy air defenses at Kobuleti.

Phase 2. A-10's will then destroy any and all ground forces at and near Kobuleti.

Phase 3. The A-10 Flight Leader will then call in the C-130 to land at Kobuleti.

Phase 4. Once the C-130 has landed and stopped, the SAS team will disembark, move to and secure the Fullback's hangar, and insert the CIA pilots.

Phase 5. A-10's will provide CAS in case the enemy tries to reinforce Kobuleti.

Phase 6. The CIA pilots will steal the Fullback and land at Kutaisi airbase with the A-10's providing escort.

Voice overs:

* Kimi "Sockmonkey" Hahn .... as 'Hercules 95 J'

* Chris “Datek” Poulos ......... as 'Grand Theft One'

* Cen "DarkFire" Blackwell ..... as 'Bulldog Two Zero'

* Maury "Moose" Pratt ......... as 'Coffee Time Actual'

Mission 6: Cut and Run!

Mission type: Singleplayer

Filename for A-10A mission six: SteelWinterSingleA-6.miz

Filename for A-10C mission six: SteelWinterSingleC-6.miz

The General is on the move! Satellite surveillance has spotted 4 identical convoys moving out from Kobuleti in all directions. Intel is positive he's in a vehicle in one of those convoys... but we don't know which one! Your A-10's are armed with Mavericks, LGB's(A-10C), Iron Bombs(A-10A) and, of course, Guns. We have exhausted our supply of cluster bombs. You may start engines whenever you want, but DO NOT leave your hangars until after the voice briefing. The Predator drones will spot the convoys for you as they leave Kobuleti and disperse. Fly towards your waypoint 2 and make contact with the first drone. Once you have destroyed the first convoy, follow instructions and proceed to the next available drone. To contact any of the other drones when they arrive, just fly close to them.

Depart from Kutaisi airbase and with help from the Drones, hunt down and kill the General. At mission end, after landing at Kutaisi, look for the Easter Egg at the NorthEast parking revetment. Taxi to a position near the Comms tower/revetment.

Voice overs:

* Kimi "Sockmonkey" Hahn .... as 'Freak Show'

* ViKe .............................. as 'Big Mac'

* Glenn "Apache600" Lilley .... as 'Viking'

* Bill "Bingo" Clark ............... as 'High Roller 6'

* Micah ............................ as 'Nacho'

Thanks guys! It's nice to know some are still flying the A.

Mission 2 for multiplayer is now in testing. After it's released I'll begin the modifications to a single player version and get it out for testing. Looks like it will be another few weeks for the next single player version of the series.

Honestly i dont fly the c at all. Its very complicated and i have abhard enough time using smart weapons like vikhrs and mavs from a moving plane to hit tanks as is. I like the As simplicity. Same with the su25A. I wish the a10As penny pods worked. Anyways yeah I love learning detailed planes but the A10? My first exposure was years ago on a pirates copy. I learned to fly amd deliver some ordinance but it scared me off. Fast forward with legit bought stuff now. I prefer the A and will leave learning the rlly tough ones to the ones I have like the huey mustang and mig21 and the ones i probably will have.. gazelle f5.. f14 def f18 def.. mi24 or f4 phantom definitely..god i need more cash and a better comp

Quite fascinating feedback.

I belong to the Charlie crowd and always feel like the Alpha model is too limiting because it doesn't currently feature a clickable cockpit. But it's cool to see that both versions are still used by players. In that regard, good to see that this mission appeals to pilots of both versions.

Mission 3 uploaded, see the first post.

Gameplay tips:

1. This is a really long mission taking around 2 to 2.75 hrs to fully complete. If you don't want to play that long download the alternate mission three files and read the included Readme.

2. At some point a text message will inform you of the opportunity to repair, rearm and refuel. Send one wingman at a time to refuel at the Tanker while you land at Mozdok. Tell the other to hold position somewhere so they don't collide while refueling. Keep your eye and ears on them, don't let them RTB.

3. Some voice overs are dependent on the health of the friendly tank platoons. If you protect them they're happy, do poorly and they will ...... well...... I'll let you figure that out for yourselves.

Cool missions, although I almost rage quit on the first one...no TGP ??? !!! ????

Haha, yeah, that's a bit of a complication. ;)

I think Winston's idea was to make it enjoyable for both A-10A *and* A-10C (starting as MP missions). The TGP would give the C model a huge advantage in standoff capabilities, so leaving it out evens the battlefield for the two models. The SP version reflects this choice.

For me, this was a welcome challenge. I'd never used the C without TGP and whenever it was damaged, I felt naked and useless. After having flown the first 3 missions of this campaign, I feel a lot more comfortable using the Mav seeker as a poor man's TGP, much like the real pilots did in 91, 99 and even early on in Afghanistan after 9/11.

Are there any English play through videos of these missions?

Played the first 2 Missions with the A-10A yesterday and had a lot of fun. Nice voice Overs and atmosphere.

When I tell my wingmen to refuel, is there any chance to order them back, before they finished refueling? They ignore the Rejoin formation command and need quite a lot of time to refuel.

Did not have any other issues, but those MIG-23 gave me a good fright. Somehow I managed to down them both.

Comes, I'm not big on singleplayer flying so maybe someone else will advise you on the AI wingman refueling issues. I notice the same thing in testing. The idea here is just to give yourself a bit of time to rearm/refuel without your wingmen landing and despawning. Often it's longer than needed or expected.

Just wanted to let you know, that I completed the 3rd mission and I ran in a few problems with my wingmen (Apart from that, everything worked great, was a nice mission).

I ordered them to refuel and it seemed that both of them were to dumb to connect to the tanker. They tried numerous approches, but sonner or later they gave up and tried again.

Don't know if you can do much there, maybe give the tanker a more straight route to make it easier for them?

And it seems you can stop there Refueling procedure by ordering them to RTB. After that just order them to rejoin the formation and they'll be right back at your side.

Single player mission 6 uploaded. See the first post. Please report bugs, problems and questions here. Enjoy!

There is some randomness in this mission. It has a chance to play out differently each time you fly it. For more info, read the spoilers below but only after you have flown it once.

There's four motorized convoys in the mission.

1st convoy: no chance the General is in this one, but it will set up the mission and let the convoys disperse.

2nd convoy: it's a coin flip (50-50 chance) he will be here.

3rd convoy: another coin flip whether he's in this one or not.

4th convoy: He will be here if not in the 2nd or 3rd convoy.

Don't forget to seek out the Easter Egg after you get the General and land at Kutaisi. Just taxi to the most northeast parking revetment near the Comms tower.
