Prop/jetwash

Hi ED,

Is it possible to have prop/jetwash effects in the sim? Is it compliant with the present atmosphere model?

It could be a plus, a nice feature.

Thank you for your work and dedication.

Right. The current prop-wash affect the generating aircraft itself but I don't think it affect the surrounding (in the crossing trajectory of course) aircraft.

I don't talk about the visual effect in/over clouds but the physical effect: when me, in my A-10c / P-51d / whatever... I cross the wash of another aircraft, it could be fine to have the shake, the dynamic effect. Maybe a question for the specialists of the atmosphere (air) model.

It's not that hard to do but it requires certain programmer's manpower. It's in our plans though and the materials are awaiting Lancelot to convert formulas to concrete code. :)

This sounds really good. I can't wait.

For helicopters could be really important cause there should be some impact in formation flying... not that much about behind the aircraft, but below it :)

The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.

So great to hear. This proves again that you can count on those guys to gradually expand DCS into an ever greater sim environment. And it´s almost friday again - can´t wait to see what Wags has to say about EDGE (which hopefully he does).

Cheers!

I'd love to see wake turbulence and jetwash but can imagine they would be hard to code. Wake turbulence in particular can extend hundreds of feet behind an aircraft and slowly spirals downwards. In light aircraft you have to fly a mile or two in trail behind the big boys just so it doesn't flip you over!

P-51D has propwash:

whether the helicopters have this, I imagine that too. Now that the latter affects the atmosphere, I think it is a feature not implemented.

Sometimes not?

You make a good point. I watched way more of that video than I thought I would looking for it. Never did find it but now brain hurts from those Pacman "music" noises, ;-) How on Earth did you come across that video?

That link was supposed to jump you to the scene at 2:11 where the helicopter is "shooting" trucks. Just ignore the rest of the scene and watch what the smoke does.

As to how I found that video... Eagle Dynamics made a Ka-50 simulator, and I remembered seeing it posted on these forums years ago.

Ahh ha. I see. I'll go take a look at 2:11 and perhaps turn down the volume this time.

The swirls in that picture are caused by the wake vortices from lift generation, not jetwash. You can see the same effect here:

Impressive (at 2:11) and very funny video - some kind of cross-over between Rambo 2 and the more obscure Troma movies...? The music seems out of place and is more reminiscnet of older horror/slasher movies.
