Low Resistance of Mi-8

Recommended Posts

Had some damage the last few days, including engine power loss, hydraulic pressure loss and a lot of bullet holes, but I got the chopper back in quite some style. So maybe they really improved something...

In your opinion, isn't the resistence of Mi-8 too low?

Certainly. The real deal has a reputation for being of very stout construction; the one we get in DCS is made of styrofoam and tissue paper :)

Just for interest sake, does anyone know of or seen any examples of the Mi-8 taking a lot of damage and still flying? Most stuff I read on it, it is not heavily armoured.

Cant get into down range specifics, but yes its what you would call the A10c in the rotorwing world as far as taking hits and getting fellas home. No photo or video proof just some other operators testimony about it....

There's a RL video of one eating a Stinger or an Igla and just calmly flying away. According to some sources it did crash land later, but AFAIK the crew survived the incident regardless. So yeah, the RL Hip is indeed a sturdy beast.

Here's a video of one IRL being hit by a manpad, and continuing on like it doesn't care.

I also agree it has a damage model that leaves it out of balance with the other helicopters in DCS at the moment.

Looking back at the tracks, a single ak-74 burst of seven rounds will bring you down pretty reliably.

Now - that CAN happen I suppose, but it should definitely not be "likely" or as it is now "almost certain." And not only in the Mi-8.

I'd fly it a LOT more if this were brought into balance with the other helos.

If I am not wrong, that same helicopter went down after that shot, so I don't think it shrugged it off like it was nothing, it just took a minute or a few for the engine to give out and finally went down.

I dont know if this was the result of that one or another one.

Not the same incident 9L.

Copy, I wasn't sure.

SO far I have watched the latest track here and I will need to talk to the team.

My honest opinion and I am not trying to upset anyone, but I really don't think it's terrible. So hear me out...

One, the Mi-8 probably isn't meant to make multiple passes over a bunch of angry enemy soldiers.

But it did, so it took a lot of shots NOW the current DM doesn't share its secrets about what is going on (enter my token "cant wait for the new DM" statement).

The engine was hit, it was on fire, and eventually failed and the helo crashed, but there was probably enough time to get some distance and put it down safely.

The cockpit took a lot of hits and the glass showed that some of those guys should have probably not been feeling well, or feeling at all.

So anyway, I did a test myself, set up a MANPAD, the teased it in the Mi-8.

So, 1st hit.

attachment.php?attachmentid=219411&stc=1&d=1571294628

2nd hit

attachment.php?attachmentid=219412&stc=1&d=1571294628

aaaaaaaand 3rd hit.

attachment.php?attachmentid=219413&stc=1&d=1571294628

after that, I was still able to land, although I came in quite hard and broke even more stuff. So it's a little tough for me to say, I don't think you should really be getting in close and personal with angry men and AK-47s. But I will certainly ask around a bit.

No, you definitely shouldn't, but there seems to be a disrepancy between the Huey and the Hip as regards the amount of punishment each can take and still survive. Not saying this is necessarily incorrect though, but enquiring minds would like to know regardless ;)

I don't think the damage itself is in question.

It's more of a feeling that 95 out of 100 hits will always strike the engine.

Looking at the bird's silouette, it just seemes odd, given that most of the fuselage is made up of the cargo compartment.

And this concerns soldiers with small arms fire. Not really IR missiles.

I think this is it. The good ol' AI just having a hilariously sharp eye. It's just like a Huey in DCS getting hit is almost guaranteed to lose the VHF radio.

I'd assume a lot of stories of Mi-8s surviving a lot of fire have to do with the fact that most hits are likely to go straight through the mostly empty cargo cabin making a lot of noise but not a lot of damage to the aircraft.

And that is what I was wondering, we just made an adjustment to the aircraft AI aiming and such, I think maybe similar changes need to be made to the ground units.

When the cockpit armor is installed, it usually includes armor plate for the sides of the engines, flight control servos, and the hydraulic compartment. The armor is basically just quarter inch steel plate.

Thats more than enough to stop 5.56 and Ak fire. Hopefully the INF get tuned a little.

Thanks for the info

Although, that's damage on the right side of the airframe ( I think ) & the missile in the vid hit on the left, so.... either way that is a huge amount of damage it handled.

The infantry have always felt more deadly than most vehicles - especially without tracers and superhuman accuracy - so they definitely need to be tuned.

On a surprisingly positive note though, I flew the Mi-8 for the first time ever today, and I really enjoyed the damage model...Getting shot up by a humvee, engine fire and losing power but enough to do a crash landing with the rotors flopping, gear buckled but ended up sliding through the snow, then coming to a stop with the glass having been shot up or damaged in the crash, but alive.

In the Gazelle it's 2-3 bullets, and then "peeeeeeeeeeew" as the engine dies in a split second and you freefall and get vaporized on the ground instantly. Sure, it's weaker, but it acts the same regardless of if its small arms fire or a missile strike, just seems like a lazy Arma 3-level damage model.

its also my impression that the mi8 is to easy to shoot down.

as another simmer wrote somewhere then i also kind of given up using the weapons on the heli since i pretty much get shot down everytime since the heli is so fragile.

What typical take me down is infantry gunfire, sometimes one single hit will just kill your heli, while in rare cases you can take 5-8 hits without nothing happening ( in the side of the heli ).

To me the mi8 feel like its made of glass, and need to be more tough.

example if 1x infantry is standing on the landing pad of an oil rig with a rifle with 7.62mm and you get withing firing range and hit.. The soldier wins and heli crash into the ocean.

( ps.. i love the mi8 its a great heli and fly fantastic in dcs )

My best strategy is to stay away from trouble, always run never fight.. and if I dare bring rockets or gun along i shoot from up high on max range and turn hard left or right and fly away after i fire. But in general i avoid the fight
