Laser code change in the loadout window

Hello ED,

Please implement a small enhancement to the loadout window (Alt+'). The window could include the option to change the laser code for LGBs while on the ground (so far accessible only through the Mission Editor), which would still pass for the sake of realism because the laser code is adjusted by the ground crew anyway.

This feature would make multiplayer missions easier (until a proper Mission Planner arrives) with the ability to fly multiple missions against different targets using different laser codes. That could also work on the other airplanes as well.

im not 100% sure but if i recall correctly then its planned that we in the future can open the notebook ( yellow page ) and there change the laser code before takeoff.. Just like in the F5 plane. ( and ofcourse via the editor )

That is not true. It's actually quite the opposite. ED deliberately doesn't want to put this option in the kneeboard, as this is just a workaround used by some 3rd party devs and is not what the kneeboard is intended for. Instead ED wants to implement the laser code in their upcoming data cartridge function (or "mission cartridge" as ED calls it), although I also would prefer to have this in the loadout window.

And please make it the same for all planes... (A-10C, F/A-18C, F-16C including 3rd party).

No need for the data cartridge or a kneeboard function.

Its a mechanical process which needs to be accessible everytime you are at a friendly airbase. -> Rearm window.

IMHO that all should be put to a debrief and prebrief rooms. Not to cockpits, not to kneeboard etc.

The process should go that after you land, you park aircraft and you jump to debrief room where are all the maps, last intelligence, roster etc in the dynamic campaign as in the multiplayer. That is where you get to choose your next sortie, you make the flight plan, you accept/choose your weapons loadout, settings like random laser codes etc gets transferred to kneeboard. After you accept the sortie, you choose the parking slot available for the chosen aircraft. Then you jump to aircraft cockpit. And now IF the aircraft supports data cartridge, you insert that to it, like in JF-17. You transfer the data from it to flight computer and be ready. Otherwise you have all the data only on your kneeboard and you need to program your aircraft for all of it.

For a special cases, like a rearming Viggen, you do it all in cockpit. Because in its doctrine you don't leave the aircraft for rearming etc, you work only with hand signals with ground crew chief. Anyways the usual rearming and refueling when you don't change the armament, mission etc, you are faster than when you do.

In the game-mode (instead sim-mode) there can be a virtual data cartridge for all aircrafts, where you can set those specifications in mission editor or in rearming/refuel window and save/load those as virtual data cartridges that you then can just pick up (like you can now already but only for armament) and get flying.

But going through the debriefing room etc means you jump to one space where are other pilots on server etc. You get all the missions, sorties, available weapons, total fuel available etc. It is the meeting point for all pilots and there you have as well the public VoIP channel for everyone on that room, as well a speaker for the general voice channel among the other pilots, so you might hear people get engaged etc.

If you have spotted ground units etc somewhere, you need to survive back to base, land the aircraft and get to debriefing room. There you see then available button to start adding marks on the map of your spotted targets and their location as well you can remember. And if you had a reconnaissance pod with you, only then all the collected data (like Viggen signal collection) as well photographs you took, are transferred to the debriefing room map and list. If you die, you crash on landing, all of it is lost. If you don't park aircraft properly on parking slot, the data does not get transferred, until some delay like 30 min or until you move aircraft to correct place.

The debriefing room would be dedicated for every airbase, every carrier, and every roadbase. So if you fly to another airbase, there is different debriefing data, different sorties, aircrafts, fuel, weapons etc. The only thing that there is with you is then the data cartridges for the aircrafts as those are per-client saved, and generated anyways on the debriefing room. So you might not want to load a cartridge from wrong airbase that has wrong take-off and landing airbases stored to it, or wrong frequencies for the ATC, GCI, AWACS, JTAC, Ground Troops etc. As all the available frequencies etc are listed on the debriefing wall/computers/maps.

Whoa, I'm afraid you're dreaming a bit too big for the time being. Let's talk about this again in 5-10 years.

The challenges for that really is the 3D models for the airbases debriefing rooms. We already know that the Super Carrier will have own debriefing room.

And 3D model for a roadbase operation tent, so a large tent with couple tables for maps, board for roster list and radio communication devices etc.

And then get the system how to transfer data from aircraft to these localized debriefing rooms once landed. And the main challenge really is question, how is the player in those debriefing rooms? It can't be a 3D modeled soldier, instead I would more likely see a 3D room where you click the stations or parts and you get them full screen on you like mission editor is now. So nothing fancy 3D modeling for user interface eventually. And it would be workable in 2D displays as well VR users.

It ain't much more difficult really than making the whole digital data cartridge. But it requires to have the long term plan that how they will be eventually done, because developing something that gets worthless in next big upgrade is bad.

Most of the work is already in the DCS. What it needs is how to parse all of that together. And that IMHO is the part of the Combined Arms that should offer the stations for ATC in airbases, landing officer etc in roadbases and then its own structure and mechanics for the commanding troops, using the supply transports, planning the routes, reporting etc. All that is mainly from the CA module task, where the pilots would only really be there seeing the available sorties or even planning those.

As ED can't anymore just focus for a aircrafts, they need to start focusing for the RTS game aspects and the CA owners to command large scale wars with realistic troop command structure (instead groups and triggers etc) and so on. And data cartridges are the means how pilots will transfer the data from that system to their aircrafts. And customize their aircrafts to be ready as they like them. As well transfer data from their flight to the debriefing so everyone else in the airbase etc gets that information.

As the pilot main purpose to exist is to support ground units. And that requires that ground units advance, they engage enemy and they gain more ground. And they have their own challenges like a enemy has superior terrain advantage or there is enemy that can't be destroyed, so they need assistance from air arm for that. So the ground units needs to generate a request for air support. And that information is required to be visible for virtual pilots, so they can see where is what, what is needed and what is required to be done to get that mission completed. So when pilot is given that location X has a fortification that needs to be bombed, around that place is somewhere a moving SAM system protecting the air space, and there are numerous MANPAADS in the area at last reported places, and they get to design their flight plan to avoid those or minimize the risk to get shot down. See all the frequencies of the ground troops, JTAC etc. And then choose the payload to just for that mission. And then jump to aircraft and go to complete that mission. Such missions can be designed not just by the pilots, but as well by the CA module users, that has access to wider range of the support and units around the place. So the pilots has less situational awareness than CA commander.

And these premade missions can be simply set for those data cartridges so virtual pilots can just jump to debriefing room, select a mission, see the flightplan, loadout etc. And then go to complete it.

It's much more complicated than just 3D models, which is why the Super Carrier will not have this feature on release. It will come at a later point, which can be much later. So again, I'm afraid you're dreaming too big for the time being and is way above what this thread here is actually about: Giving us a simple, yet somewhat realistic solution for laser codes.

That's fine and all for singleplayer and if you have the time but in multiplayer this just would not be feasible. Real life limitations mean that I have at most 1.5 hours to fly a day. Between INS alignments, Mission designers who like realistic deep-strike missions and now briefing rooms I'd be lucky to get one sortie in. And even if I had more time you'd probably want to get rid of hot-rearms. On the servers I fly people are spread out between at least 4 time zones, so not everyone shows up at the same time. There are very few occasions where we can coordinate strikes to this level. And if we do have FAC I have to shut the A/C down and go to Debrief Room to deconflict the laser codes?

Lets be reasonable here. I like realism as much as the next person and I'm not not advocating changing codes midair or any other Ace Combat type mechanics, but its still a simulation with some artistic license and as such, the loadout window makes sense and a practical compromise..
