DDR4 prices are insane

Recommended Posts

It is no secret that DRAM is at a high price for numerous reasons but this is getting ridiculous.

My own kit is now at 500€, any decent 3200 AMD Kit 32GB/4x8 is roughly 420€ or more.

Thing is, I am building a new rig for either my son or myself, then he'll get my bare bones.

I was looking for a combo I built before, same 1600X for 220€ and Asus Prime 370 Pro for 140€.

Those 16GB/2x8 (only) for him at 3200MHz/CL14 ( he's a gamer ) is a whoppin' 265€ alone.

Those are insane RAM prices

If I knew what to do

I need to spend a payment I get in hardware, no cash. Somewhere between 1500 and 3600€.

Either I build this 1600X-AsusX370Pro-16GB kit for my son ( he got 750GTX-Ti, 850Pro-SSD, H110-AIO, Case + PSU from Corsair) and I get myself a 1080Ti plus some other stuff to beef up my PC like a 960Pro-NVMe and a Laptop that I can sell to my sister in law, mouse and keyboard for everybody and stuff like that, as I personally actually dont want that 1080Ti NOW, I could wait for a 2080Ti, I am happy with my rig as-it-is. And I dont know zillions of people now that want that much in parts, so I might end up with this:

AMD 1950X

Asus ROG Zenith Extreme 10G

32GB Gskill FlareX 3200 Made for TR4

Gigabyte Aorus 1080Ti Waterforce

Heatkiller IV for TR4

..and pass my CPU-GPU-RAM-MOBO to my son. Luckily my GPU also has fans, hybrid, as he only runs this Corsair Closed Loop H110 thing.

I am most certain that DCS will still perform good enough on 4-4.2G on XFR with a 1080Ti and 1440p, I dont need 144fps, 100-120 is ok too if my lowest fps over Vegas still go up due to the 1080Ti and not down because of the change of CPU, 5G->4G.

I really dont need a 1950X, tho it would be nice to have, but neither do I need 2 x 1080Ti or 3 external radiators. SO I think, if it turns out to be 3.6k and all in Hardware, then I build this Threadripper kit plus a nice little 600€ laptop for my sister in law for which she will pay me out.

That damn FlareX certified TR4 DRAM is 472€ for 4x8/32GB......yikes !!! :(

I don't know XFR, but with an i5 4.3 Ghz and a 1080 I get between 80 and 144+ fps @ 1440 in freeflight in the vicinity of Tsibili airport. I attach my settings.

Early this year I was considering a new build and was reading that memory prices were on the up for the remainder of 2017. So I ended up back in February 2017 purchasing a kit of Corsair Vengeance White LED 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR4 3200MHz Memory for AUD $352.99. The price of this exact same kit now, barely 9 months later here in Australia is AUD $648.98. Not far off double what I payed for it! So in this instance it was definitely a case of winner winner chicken dinner for me.

Normally when I look to building a rig I buy all of my parts at once and have never bought a part here and a part there over a two or three month period as some people do. However in this instance I convinced myself that I may as well buy the system RAM now while I am deciding on a new build. As it turned out it payed off big time because still I am yet to build my rig as I waited based on rumours that Intel were going to bring Coffee Lake forward to a 2017 release. So now I am just waiting on Asus to release their ROG Maximums X Formula and Code (rumoured to release later this November) before deciding on which of the two boards to pair with an i7-8700K. I expect to have built before Christmas.

  • 2 weeks later...

The cost of DDR4 RAMs will go down in later half of next year. As all the electronics now a days are using DDR4 the companies producing the base material are facing problems keeping up with the demands and thus price hike.

Wow. I purchased Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz in June this year from Amazon.com for $136. It looks like I bought it just in time. It's now about $100 more. I also purchased the EVGA 1080 Ti SC2 Gaming at that time as well and it is also about $100 more right now.

600, as Rico guessed right. It's 2 kits with 23% VAT contributing for this madness.

you are INSAAAAAAAAAAANE ;)

..just like me when it comes to RAM.

Tho I know the benefit is minimal in most apps, I think fast RAM with low latency can cut corners in fast fps games, TiR or VR..... for a high price.
