HP's Reverb VR Pro Headset

I’ve just ordered an Aussie one too, they have indicated it will be here tomorrow! I’m slightly daunted by the set up issues but I’m also pretty excited.

Can someone with some experience please confirm some issues lest I have to trawl through 300 odd pages.....again:

1. Best to uninstall Oculus software to avoid conflicts.

2. Make sure there is no power issues as per Wormeaten’s excellent observation.

3. Can someone also confirm that if I’m on Windows auto updates that whichever version is current should be fine?

4. Given I’ve been using stand alone DCS up until now I will need to install SteamVR and then add that as a non native game?

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions in addition to the above, 279 pages is a lot to go through.

I can only answer the Steam question Yes you will need steam VR to run it but not the steam version of DCS. The standalone version works fine it just runs thru Steam

I've just ordered mine from HP due to ship on the 21st. Thank you to everyone who has posted I've monitored this thread closely which has been a huge help for me.

This is my first step into VR is there anything I can do from a software perspective to prepare?

For example should I install SteamVR?

Thank you

No harm in installing SteamVR, plus you will need Mixed Reality for SteamVR (just put that in the steam store, it is free).

Should I also order from HP USA?

I am just worried I may get an old one or one with a clip.

I'll be back from vacation on the 21st so I would have it later. Running a 1080ti and 32gb with an 8700k here.

Or is it better to wait for that guy on Reddit to confirm?

The ones from HP USA, Amazon, and Best Buy here in the US should be "fixed" ones once they start shipping again on 8/21/2019. I would be nervous about old returns being reshipped from some of the other places. We are in the limbo period for a while until all of the baddies are cleared out of the pipeline. Hopefully, the new ones are all goodies. :)

Voodooimaxx on Reddit (Reverb QC Manager at HP USA) has taken a beating on these Reverb's. I have chatted with him quite a bit although he isn't my official tech support contact at HP on the Reverb and he just supervises the final testers. As I mentioned an engineering group in Houston figured out the actual technical problems. Hopefully, this poor product introduction is behind them. For DCS they are the best bet in town and lucky for them Acer didn't release the Ojo ConceptD headset on the consumer side although they have on the commercial side.

Looks like Amazon is back shipping the new Pros (but a higher price :( ). They cleared out the old listings and reviews. Right now they must be drop-shipping from HP and are not Prime.

Best Buy is not but they were only selling the Standard ones. After having both I don't think the Pro is worth the extra $50 unless you plan on using a backpack computer and need the short cable since they now both have the same warranty.

Yep - was that direct from HP then?

I still want to go through Best Buy for all of the benefits I have there.

So, I was able to setup a 'repair' return - was told I'd get an updated unit as described here.

I have a consumer version so I do have to send it back for repairs.

Fingers crossed

Has HP stated what the fixes are to the new Pros? I'm curious on technically what they solved. Also is there a Serial Number or something I can check on the box to see if I'm looking at a new HP Reverb 2.0 or the prior version?

That's basically what I'm waiting for before I order. I've waited this long, I'll wait a bit more.

The HP QC guy on Reddit only mentioned the thermal and flickering issues as fixed. He really didn't go into the entire list.

so what's the currently best way to order one and be mostly assured of getting the new version, how does one tell what version they have and what version is the updated version?

I've heard V1.1002, v1.1, v1.2...

Please advise :)

Yes - stay clear of the third party. I am thinking if these Gen 2's are ok we will see things return to normal on sales in a few weeks. I found out when I return mine to Best Buy I can even get my birthday discount code reactivated so I can use it again on the final one.

Update:

The HP QC guy doesn't get too involved with sales although he did say in response to someone else (in Australia) on Reddit that here forward globally the new shipments should be updated ones.

We should be! The fixes are across Standard and Pro. :)

Thanks RePhil, that’s great.

Does anybody else at least know whether the Windows 10 version compatibility issues have been resolved?

I think you are asking about the 1903 update issues and yes those were resolved with a fix about a month ago.

Now to complicate matters Microsoft just released a new 1903 update today and I have no idea if that will cause a problem. I halted my updates. Has anyone installed it?

Thanks RePhil, that’s great.

Here is the manufacturer date structure for the Reverb according to HP.

Example SN: CCSYWWZZZZ

Y = Year

WW = Week within that year.

Mine came with a cable clip from ShopBLT two weeks ago ordered July 26th and shipped to me on the same day from Shop BLT. My date is 925 so I would sat that mine was manufacturer this year sometime around mid June. I do not have flicker or dimming displays yet.

Here is the serial number of the first one I returned to HP. This would have been a very early one. If that is right then it would have been manufactured in:

Week 21 May 20, 2019 May 26, 2019

Serial number: 8CC921Z01V (if you get this one you know it was refurbished)

Product number: 7DH40UT

I ordered it June 1 and received it on June 10th. If the ship date for the Gen 2's is maybe 8/21 or a bit earlier than I would guess they are being manufactured after about the third or fourth week in July? So 9 30 or 9 31 or 9 32 or later? Hopefully, they are not fixing and shipping the first ones. lol

I haven't had any issues with my headset when it run but if I shut the Reverb down and close WMR and Steam VR, quite a few times I get this error on restarting WMR and I have to reboot the PC to get WMR working again. Sometimes I have to reboot PC a few times which is really annoying. Anyone else have issues after restarting the Reverb again after closing down the initial VR session?

From my recent experience with my Reverb suddenly dying, but then spontaneously coming back to life a couple of days later, I think its a matter of unplugging the Reverb completely and giving it some time for everything to discharge, pretty much the same way you do it when you have to reset a router. That theory seemed to be confirmed by the HP commercial division support rep I talked to last night. He specifically said that sometimes you have to give the headset a little time unplugged in order for things to fully discharge and reset when you experience an error like that. I was getting a USB error on mine, which miraculously cured itself during the time I had it put away pending some free time to call HP.
