DCS World Weekend Update - 2 June 2017

Header2017_720-EN.jpg

DCS World 2.1 Update 1

Today we are releasing the first update to DCS World 2.1, which can include the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map and/or the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map. Over the past week, we have been carefully noting all feedback and we will do our best to address all concerns. For this first update, we have made the following primary changes.

For following week, we plan to add several new DCS: World War II Assets Pack units including anti-aircraft units, beach fortifications, barrage balloons, and several others.

DCS World 1.5 Status

In parallel to DCS World 2.1, we are also creating the next update for DCS World 1.5. The primary addition will be the support for the DCS: World War II Assets Pack. This update will be coming soon.

DCS World War II News

With the Early Access, Alpha release of the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map and the DCS: World War II Assets Pack, the team is very focused on moving these projects from Alpha to Beta, and then Beta to Final release as soon as possible. Our teams devoted to these projects are working hard and making great progress.

A big part of this effort is fleshing out the DCS: World War II Assets Pack. We have included some work-in-progress images of new Asset Pack units coming to DCS World: C-47, Ju-88, Sd.Kfz. 234/2 Puma, and Sd.Kfz.251.

We are also continuing to develop the P-47 and Me 262, as part of the original Kickstarter plan.

This is a huge year for DCS World War II that will continue to grow and improve as the year progresses.

New Damage Model Update

In order to bring DCS World to a new level of combat simulation, an improved damage model system is certainly required. Our team has diligently been working on this new and improved system and it will entail the following features:

  • We have moved from tracking 30 damage variables to several hundred damage variables. This includes such variables as each airframe spars, engine components, fuel tanks, oil, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, control surfaces, ammo boxes, etc.
  • All elements have unique durability values that are used calculate of bullet penetration into the structure
  • There will be no more statistical accumulation of damage, so for example, you can't tear off a wing by simply shooting at its tip
  • All elements can now be torn off by destroying their attachment points or airframe elements (wing spars for example)
  • Damage can be distributed from one element to another by fire
  • All liquids will flow out from holes, and this will result in decreasing effectiveness of hydraulic and pneumatic systems

We have attached images to better illustrate how we will track internal damage to an aircraft.

World War II Bomber Formation Improvements

A key aspect of recreating the air war over World War II Europe will be the creation of realistic bomber formations. Allowing mutually supportive defense in large formations has been an important new feature added to the Mission Editor. Let’s take a closer look at this new feature.

For every formation, there needs to be a formation leader (these were often painted in high visibility colors) that all other flight elements fly in relation to. You will set the formation leader route and tasks as you normally would (a new “Carpet Bombing” has been added in which all members of the formation will drop bombs with the formation leader).

Big formations made up of a number of basic airplane relationships. From smallest to the largest you can set these formation as:

  1. Flight elements (most often 3 aircraft)
  2. Box or Squad - up to four Elements(usually 12 planes)
  3. Group Formation - up to four Boxes(usually 3 Boxes - 36 planes)
  4. Wing formation - up to four Groups(usually 3 Groups - 108 planes)

In order to set the attached flight elements to the larger formation leader element, you will need to select the “WW2 Big Formation” task from Action list of the Perform Task, Advanced Waypoint Actions. You next need to set the Formation Leader by selecting the desired flight element clicking on it or with the “GROUP” drop down list (the formation leader element will then have a line connecting it with this following element). Leaders of "Groups" and "Wing" should follow the "main" leader and members of this "Groups" and "Wings" should follow their leaders. I.e. "Box" elements follow by their "Group" leaders, "Group" leaders follow by their "Wing" leaders and "Wing" leaders follow by main leader.

Next thing you need to set - is flight element position in formation - for members of the "Box"- use "Pos_In_Box" drop down list, for "Box leaders"(members of Group) - use "Pos_In_Group" drop down list, and for "Group leaders"(members of Wing) - use "Pos_In_Wing" list.

Please see the pictures:

1_Box_Member_720.jpg

1. Members of "Leading Box" has "New Airplane Group #001" as leader and their position determined by "Pos_In_Box" drop down list.

2_Group_Member_Box_Leader_720.jpg

2. Leader of "Right Box" also has "New Airplane Group #001" as leader and their position determined by "Pos_In_Group" drop down list.

3_Second_Box_Member_270.jpg

3. Member of "Right Box" has "New Airplane Group #010"(leader of this box) as leader and their position determined by "Pos_In_Box" drop down list.

For best results, we suggest using the Close Formation in Options / Formation / WW2 Bomber Element / Close for Combat box formation, or Options / Formation / WW2 Bomber Element Height Separation/ Close for Javelin Down formation.

Additionally, set the formation leader to a cruise speed (not maximum speed) to better allow attached elements to maintain formation and try to avoid drastic course changes in the flight plan.

For the “Carpet Bombing” Task, you need to set it just to the formation leader and it allows you to set the bombing aim point, the quantity of bombs to be dropped and the length this bombs should cover. These settings will then be carried out by all attached formation elements.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet at E3 2017

This week we had the debut showing of the Hornet at E3 2017. We were fortunate enough to share the Thrustmaster booth to give a first taste of what we have in store. The demo was received very well and all who flew it came away quite impressed. Our demo station never had a moment of down time. We also had the pleasure to share our Hornet debut with the debut of the new Thrustmaster Hornet stick. We are sure this will be a great pairing.

When we are ready to offer the Hornet for pre purchase, we will officially announce the product with fanfare.

DCS: World War II Update

In parallel to the Hornet, other parts of Eagle are hard at work on improving and adding to our World War II series. Some of the more important items include:

We fixed some incorrect textures being loaded in autumn season for the Normandy map. We have also been cleaning up some geometry mesh errors in this map.

We have added Create Fast Mission support to the Normandy map. Our next step will be to add an "era" function to allow you to determine the time period of units that are generated.

New World War II assets continue to be developed at a brisk pace. We are now in the final stages of completing the 155mm Gun Motor Carriage M12 and the A-20 Havoc attack aircraft. These are AI units.

Epsom-Cover-720-Forum.jpg

The first campaign for the new Normandy 1944 Map has entered testing this week, and we hope for it to be available for sale in the near future. This will be a Spitfire campaign and consist of 12 missions that focus on the Epsom campaign following the D-Day landings in June 1944. The missions consist of a combination of armed reconnaissance, intercepts, and directed ground attacks.

Epsom-Maps.jpg

For this campaign, we teamed up with the greatly respected “Bunyap”, who has created an amazing level of detail and content for the briefings and historical background. All missions and flights in the campaign are based on actual missions down to the squadrons, targets, locations, times, weather, flak locations, etc. We believe this will be the most historically accurate portrayal of World War II air combat in a PC flight simulation.

DCS World 1.5.7 Update

Today we have released a new update to Open Beta DCS World 1.5, with the primary new feature being the support for the DCS: World War II Assets Pack.

Although primarily developed for the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map, these World War II period units work just as well in the Caucasus map. We hope this provides you another option for creating engaging World War II themed missions.

Purchase the DCS: World War II Assets Pack in DCS e-shop

You can find the complete changelog of this DCS World 1.5 update here.

Bundle Deals

This week we are happy to over two bundle deals that include both DCS: Combined Arms and the DCS: World War II Assets Pack for a 40% off savings:

These bundle deals start today at 1500 GMT and will last until 10 July 2017 at 0900 GMT.

You can find them in the special offers of DCS e-shop

DCS World New Maps Update

Now that the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map has been released and we are in a tuning and bug fixing mode, some of our map team has shifted their focus to two other maps we have in development:

New Caucasus Map. Based on the existing map in DCS World 1.5, we are working on a huge update that will include:

  • Improved textures for all seasons
  • Improved and higher resolution ground elevation mesh
  • Improved ground object textures for buildings, roads, bridges, airfields, etc.
  • Adding terrain shadows based on time of day
  • New tree system for more and better-looking forests
  • Additional map area in the southern portion of the map
  • Added procedural grass

Caucasus-to-DCS-forum.jpg

Most important though, this updated map will incorporate our new map format and technology that will allow it to be merged into a single DCS World version that includes all of the other maps. The completion of this map is a critical component of moving all DCS World to version 2 and saying goodbye to DCS World 1.5.

As this will update our existing Caucasus map, this update will be for FREE!

DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map. In parallel, our map team is hard at work on the Strait of Hormuz map and making great progress. Using the same map format and technology as the New Caucasus map and the others, this map will also be part of a unified DCS World 2.

Hormuz-to-DCS-forum.jpg

As with the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map, the DCS: Strait of Hormuz map will blend satellite imagery with art-created textures such that it looks good from squirrel-level to 60,000 feet and beyond. We are particularly looking forward to making this a great home for our DCS: F/A-18C Hornet.

News of Su-33 for DCS World

Currently in the Eagle Dynamics update hangar is our Su-33 for DCS World / Flaming Cliffs 3. This carrier-borne aircraft is in the final stages of receiving a big, FREE update that includes much improved flight dynamics and the addition of several new systems. This will bring our Su-33 much more aligned with its real-world counterpart.

Screen_170704_140250.jpg

Screen_170704_140212.jpg

Screen_170704_135927.jpg

Features of this upcoming Su-33 update include:

  • Professional Flight Model (PFM)
  • More detailed and accurate simulation of the wing control surfaces that include the leading and trailing edge flaps and the differential ailerons. In addition to the conventional differential stabilizers, canard behavior has also been improved for more realistic behavior. The Flight Control System (FCS) will automatically reconfigure itself depending on the flight mode.
  • The adaptations that make the Su-33 aircraft carrier-capable have been updated and improved to include the wing-fold mechanism, reinforced landing gear struts, and the inclusion of high-gain nose wheel steering for use on crowded carrier decks.
  • The physical mechanisms by which the arrestor hook engages the aircraft carrier arrestor wire has been greatly improved. Correct physics have been applied to the arrestor wire and its’ interaction with the aircraft.
  • The engines now have a “special mode” that adds up to 12,800 kg of thrust (instead of the normal 12,500 kg of thrust). This mode also includes realistic operating time restrictions.
  • A new FCS mode used when aerial refueling has also been implemented. When in this mode and the control stick is released, the aircraft will automatically maintain level flight. This FCS mode allows fine-control and thus making it easier to make contact with the tanker within a pitch range of plus or minus 5 degrees and of a roll angle of plus or minus 10 degrees.
  • The Auto-Thrust Control (ATC) is used for automatic speed holding and can be fine-tuned with a set speed switch. This can be useful with landing on the carrier.
  • The automatic collision avoidance system (“Uvod” mode) is now included and allows safe nap-of-the-earth flying.

For today, we’re happy to show our updated Su-33 with improved flight dynamics landing on the new Kuznetsov aircraft carrier that is also in development. We believe this will be a great counterpart to our Hornet.

New US Trains for DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map

Although we have inner-city commuter trains in the Nevada map, we’ve lacked the inclusion of long-haul trains. Our team has been working on resolving this absent feature. We’ve included three images of the new train cars and locomotive coming to the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map.

DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map

In parallel with updating the Caucasus map, our map teams have been busy with the DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map. The team is making great progress with completing all of the airfields, adding additional details to the towns and cities, and refining the terrain details. Combined with the new lighting and rendering system, we are increasingly happy with the look and feel of this map. We continue to strive to make this map a close approximation of this region as possible.

Here are three images of the current state of this map.

Owners of DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 will receive the Su-33 for FREE! Upon Early Access release of the Su-33 for DCS World, DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 will be priced at $44.99 USD.

  • The automatic collision avoidance system ("Uvod" mode) is now included and allows safe nap-of-the-earth flying.

Announcing the P-51D: Charnwood Campaign

Created by the same team behind the Spitfire: Epsom Campaign, work is moving rapidly on this historically-based campaign for the P-51D over Normandy in July 1944. The Charnwood campaign reproduces missions P-51D missions flown in support of the allied breakout of Normandy. Given the Mustang’s combination of air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities (bombs and rockets), this campaign will offer a wealth of mission types and challenges. Each mission is based on a real mission, down to weather, times, squadrons, mission tasks, and allied and axis unit placement.

Coming Autumn 2017.

Weekend F-5E Tiger II Sales and Bundles

For this week, we have a couple great bundles and a great 60% off sale! These offers start today at 1500 GMT and will last until 9 October at 0900 GMT:

DCS: F-5E Tiger II at 60% off!

The F-5E was developed by Northrop Corporation in early 1970s. The light tactical fighter is an upgraded version based on previous F-5A developments. The F-5s' combat role encompasses air superiority, ground support, and ground attack. Given its mission flexibility, ease of operation, and low cost, the Tiger II has, and continues to serve, air forces across the globe.

The F-5Е is armed with two 20-mm М39-А3 cannons with 280 rounds per each cannon. The cannons are located in the nose section, forward of the cockpit. Special deflectors are used to avoid compressor stall conditions caused by hot gas ingestion as a bi-product of operating the M-39-A3. Each cannon is capable of firing at a rate of 1500 to 1700 rounds per minute.

Each wingtip incorporates a launcher rail capable of firing AIM-9 infrared-guided missiles.

Five hard points (one centerline pylon and four underwing pylons) allow the aircraft to carry different types of air-to-ground weapons (bombs, cluster munitions, and rockets) 6,400 pounds (about 3000 kg) in total. In addition, illumination ammunition and cargo containers can be attached. To increase flight duration and range, external fuel tanks can be attached to three hard points (a centerline pylon and two inboard pylons). Maneuverability and speed can be maximized in combat by jettisoning all external stores.

Key Features of the DCS: F-5E Tiger II:

  • Professional Flight Model that accurately mimics the performance and flight characteristics of this legendary fighter
  • Highly detailed, six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit
  • Interact with cockpit controls with your mouse
  • Fully modelled weapon system
  • Accurate F-5E model with multiple country markings
  • Detailed modelling of the F-5E instruments, engine, radios, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Single missions and full set of training missions will be created while in Early Access
  • Full and Quick Start manuals in Russian and English languages
  • Extended Campaign for the F-5E by Maple Flags Missions Developer (not included in the module package)

Bundle Deals:

  • DCS: F-5E Tiger II + DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map + F-5E: Air Combat Maneuvering Campaign for $60.00 USD
  • DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 + DCS: L-39 Albatros for $60.00

World War II Ground Forces Update

As part of our efforts to improve and create a more complete World War II experience in DCS World, we continue to add new ground units to the DCS: World War II Assets Pack.

Today, we have Work-In-Progress images of German telemeter KDO Mod. 40 in development.

KDO_Mod.40_3.jpg

More WIP screenshots

The Kommandogerät 40 is an anti-aircraft fire director used principally for major caliber weapons such as the 8.8 cm FlaK 36 and 10.5 cm FlaK 40. The director is basically an analog computer that uses visual observation to solve the firing parameters.

The director computes continuously by using a target speed and angle of approach method, and can handle diving and curving target courses. The time from initial pickup to first round is estimated to be 20 or 30 seconds. When shifting to a new target in the vicinity of the target previously tracked and flying an approximately parallel course, as little as 10 seconds may be required.

DCS: AV-8B N/A Update

Testing of the AV-8B N/A is well underway and RAZBAM has been doing a great job of fixing bugs as they are identified by our internal and external test teams. Both Eagle Dynamics and RAZBAM are committed to releasing a quality Early Access product.

Unlike other DCS aircraft that relied on a three-point landing gear system (tricycle or tail dragger), the AV-8B N/A has a unique four-point landing gear system. As such, Eagle Dynamics has created a new landing gear system to support this aircraft. This and other items are being carefully tested.
