  1. Agree with the OP 100% We're all stuck at home during a pandemic Christmas, can't visit family, can't hang out with friends, and then DCS comes along like Santa and offers a few weeks full of toys for everyone. Whoever decided to do the free trial over Christmas is first rate. It's not only good business because it creates a very happy and loyal customer base, but it's also just kind of a nice thing to do. Thanks DCS. All the best to all of you.
  2. Sorry, kinda noticed that later on. Sorry to drone on. Apparently the in-game difference between a good SSD and an NVME is pretty much un-noticeable. I used a NVME drive just because I was building a new rig and I figured an extra $30 for an NVME was worth it, even if it was just for the fun of it. Running the game on a good SSD that always has at least 20% empty space (or else it slows down I've heard) would be just fine.
  3. I bought the XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB NVME (just for Steam DCS, not my C drive) because it got good reviews that showed it to be close to the Samsung 970 in performance and reliability, but was considerably less expensive. I've also used the Samsung 860 SSD and they're great. Crucial MX500 SSD is almost as good but much cheaper and gets very good reviews. If I was going to clone a drive, I'd get the Samsung because their cloning software is excellent. Otherwise I'd get the Crucial, save the cash, and never notice the un-noticeable dip in performance.
  4. I think if you have SSAA and SSLR on you are going to beat the #### out of your FPS. My rig is a bit higher spec than yours and I get good FPS, but having SSAA and SSLR on together is a killer, lowers the frame rate by 1/2 maybe. I think it's SSLR that does more damage, maybe someone who knows more can chirp in.
  5. Along with a Mosquito of course.
  6. Best DCS PC is the one you can afford, built with parts you can actually buy. I built my rig at the beginning of the pandemic shortages months ago and was happy to be able to get not only some parts at all, but actually good parts. Landed a premium 750W PSU at a mostly reasonable price when very few PSUs were available at all. Same with the Motherboard. Saw the exact model I wanted become available for about $50 more than usual and grabbed it right away. Sure enough two days later there were none. Took me a good two months to get all the parts. And that's already having the GPU. The end result is I have a "good enough" rig. And that's good enough for me. It's the same thing now. A 5600X, a 10700K, a 3800x, an i5-9600, it's all fine if you can afford it and have it delivered to your door. DCS will run well and you'll fly and have fun. On the other hand, a good AMD vs. Intel road rage head bashing can be entertaining.
  7. I'd be more than happy with presets for the moment. It would make all the maps and planes feel new.
  8. No, it will be terrible. You should send the CPU and GPU to me the moment they arrive and save yourself from the impending horror.
  9. I never even thought of that! That's a great idea. I want to swap my 500GB Crucial C drive for a 1TB Samsung (which has excellent cloning software, I've used it before) and I thought I'd have to buy the adapter and the SSD, do the swap, and then my 500GB Crucial would sit in a box unused with the adapter. I never considered using it as an external HD. You da man!
  10. More planes an' choppers an' maps is good planes an' choppers' an' maps! Not sure if I'll buy the Apache, but I'll definitely think about buying it.
  11. I have DCS on Steam, about a dozen modules and all the maps, and I don't have any problems with it. I can't say if it's better or worse than through the DCS site, but I play a lot of DCS and I find everything to be fine. Updates and installs are all done no problem at all.
  12. I want the 4000lb bomb and I want the big azz sub sinkin' cannon underneath. Make it please and take my money! :)
  13. Is there a way to make the carrier much, much brighter? There are no hostiles tonight and I want to be able to see the carrier from outer space, I want it lit up like a nuclear Christmas tree.

That Persian Gulf map is great. Love that nice big fat Dubai airport for some landing fun in the fast movers. The F-16... I already have the F-18 and in a way the F-16 is just more of the same. But I did enjoy it during the plague demo trials. More coffee and more looking.

Scored the Mig-29 right away. Rounds out my FC3 collection. $10 and it looks like a fun and fast little plane. Looking hard at the F-16. Not sure. There are a few to ponder, but that's the fun.

That's a really enjoyable map. Big, lots to do and lots to see. Get the lighting right and it's gorgeous. Now let's have that socially distanced Steam sale!
  23. I want to fly the Mosquito through new clouds. Bring it!
