I'm not sure he is putting anything down per say... The initial post is what got my attention and while projection is cool, works pretty well; you are just enlarging the monitors. The Fov, SA, and overall experience is not mind blowing. In my case, I realized how much money was invested/(space Req) which made me change my mind. To each his own, but Zahry was trying to make a case against OR in the initial post which is a little misleading. Most of the problems with DK1 are worked out, and come Cv1, it will be a mind blowing experience. Now, will everyone be able to use it... I'm not sure, there will be those who it will not work for. If it was that bad, Ed would be not wasting time adding code to make it work. It would be nice to get Matt's view on the Dk2 version...

Everyone has their opinions... I'm just stating where I see things going! I'm all about immersion and have 300+ hours in level D full motion sims to 7000 hours of real flight time. Also, I have built and tested every home visual option available, including the so called holy grail projection system. I can tell it's okay, but for the money, space, time, immersion... the Rift will be more used than 2d monitors in the near future.

Hi hannibal, yes - the curved screens are most beneficial for people who have a whole cockpit panels, switches, ejection seat and yes - it requires some space.
As per your OCR comments - and I have to ask before engaging in further conversation on that subject - Are those based on personal experience with both systems or are those based on shared belief and expectations created by skilled marketing department and hyped up people on forums?
As I stated earlier comparing tiny OCR displays with big projection surround system is like comparing watching movies on cellphones and watching movie in IMAX cinema.
I would like to back up my claims by some verifiable experiment - Not very many people have a projection system and 3D goggles to compare but following test should be possible for most people:
1) Go to cinema to watch a movie
2) black out 30% of the cellphone screen on each side (60% altogether - it will give you same or better resolution than Rift)
3) Put the cellphone close to your face to make it look same size as the cinema screen and and watch the same movie.
4) compare the experience and let me know which one you think is better
or even easier test - ask your optometrist about watching tiny back lit screens from very close distance through cheap generic lenses - why I mention it? because my experience cost me now about $4000 in prescription glasses and my aviation medical is lot more complicated .... (just my 5 cents)
Have you used the rift... in the current form, new update? I have used both... check out my cube thread! I tested a 5 projection (360+180 vertical) system... was cool, but still cannot compare to the immersion (rift) from a computer chair. That is why I sold all of my projectors and went with seat control mount only option. Plus... it saves so much space, which allows a person to have a fixed wing and helo setup (seat & controls) in a small space. Once Dk2 is released followed by CV1, it will be no contest and a majority of the simmers here will be using it. I called this a long time ago... ask Matt!

I have to say that DCS is one of the top experiences in the rift so far... I'm using the hydra to add 6dot and works perfect.
Good job guys!
Really, I have been a real pit guy for a long time, but the rift allows you to jump between different aircraft without spending thousands of dollars. This is the future!
-
It's cool for a full pit, but I disagree with you about OR... this from years of sim hardware experience, plus the only person to build a full cube projection display.
-
So far looks good to me... Now just need some better res!
-
I had that working months ago... very useful. Once DK2 is out, then we can play ball, because you need 6dot.

Rift support!
-
Just ordered mine!
-
Thanks Matt... I knew you guys would jump on board eventually!

4k might be pushing it, but when the rift comes out , it will be ready. I'm sure custom drivers are in the works to bypass performance issues. It's semi playable now...
Assuming your math is correct... and it works the way you're r describing... there's one more issue that many seem to be forgetting. Performance. You need a PC powerful enough to drive -2- displays at that resolution. We're not there yet. It will be a few years before we get VR resolution on par with today's monitors. Exciting times ahead... patience is a virtue. Maybe FA-18C will be here in time to pair it with Oculus Rift III. ;-D
SNIPED! :-)

It's funny to me how many opinions are posted with a majority of them have no experience with the rift.
I will be solely using the rift.
-
You can make it work with beta 2.7 and nthusim, plus open track.
-
I used an older version on nthusim....
Also, I have the razor hydra for positional tracking using opentrack. Opentrack is 1000 times better than trackir. (using the Rift)
With positional tacking you can lean and get a better view of the instruments/mfd's. I was using the targeting pod just fine.
Ok, so I set everything up, probably I can't get better with current setup.I used stereo.lua setup in DCS to render stereo pair, and I used free tool - Oculus Overlay to make screen wrap (NThusim didn't work for me in DCS)
Eye separation in stereo.lua 0.6 (-0.3 and +0.3 for left and right views), 0-for convergence (you shouldn't use any convergence when render for Rift, otherwise images will not match). And tweaked Oculus Overlay to get image of a right size and so on.
I used TrackIR5 for tracking, and HOTAS + rudder pedals for flying.
First I was very happy that everything works now and I don't have nausea from this setup, and everything is in proper stereo. BUT damn the whole experience is crippled because of super low resolution of current DevKit and bad screen in general - color reproduction, pixel smearing... I mean it is awful, you can't read any gauge in Ka-50 or Su-27, you need to zoom in so the gauge occupy huge portion of your vision to read it. And I'm not telling about looking for ground targets.
I did some ground attack mission on Ka-50, and even killed some targets, but as it is now Rift DevKit 1 is useless for DCS. Sure one can experiment but certainly not playable. So now I'm waiting for hi-rez Rift to repeat my investigation on VR DCS. Shouldn't be long now? ;)

I guess a new Nthusim build came out today.... need to test it out!
-
Would any rift dudes like to try an Mp flight later this evening?
-
Got it working pretty well at .04 separation with an older version of nthusim. the best setup yet!
Flew for a while... I can see where this is going and it will be awesome!
-
burner... any chance you can share your setup file... might do some testing later!

Looks great, much envy here. I'm gonna have to wait a while but I think the 4K route is more suitable for flight sims than the Rift.
Why dump the touch screen though? I'd be holding onto it till I had the GPU power to get helios up and running again.
Lol, wait a year and see how many folks will be rifting compared to buying 4k tv's. I'm thinking the rift will be the winner.
-
Ya, wait...
DK2 is around the corner!
-
Ed is working on it....
We will see a new rift prototype at Ces in Jan!
Rumor... New screen, 6dot , new software
-
There is a big difference between the rift and a desktop monitor! It is guaranteed to be game changer for Eagle and the Dcs series...
I don't fly without it, even in the current state.
-
It has to do with the shader analyzer, must be off in tridef.... but with it off it does cause lag with head movement. When tridef comes out with there dx10/11 update, I'm sure that will help. Hopefully DCS boys can get it going as well.
New material for flat and cylindrical displays

Well, usually I won't waste my time saying anything in post like this, but I assume you have a rift ... Correct?
