  1. Hi I suppose we are all guessing here about what temperature is 'safe' and what software gives the most accurate readings. I don't have much to add to this discussion, but I'm sure you will find some of it useful. First of all, I use Intel's own Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT) to read temperatures. http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138139-intel-tat.html I hate noise and my whole PC case has just one 120mm fan, directed at a rather large copper CPU heatsink. My temperature readings are as follows: - 60 degrees celsius idling - 77 degrees celsius under load At some point I was playing with a briskly overclocked setting and noticed the computer slowing down considerably. TAT showed temperature as ">85 celsius" and the protection mechanism in the CPU had undeclocked it to 1000MHz. What have I learned from all this: 1. The most important determinant of temps is ambient room temperature - my computer is stuck in a closet 2. The second most important thing is your cooling solution 3. Polishing, brand name thermal paste etc amount to one or two degrees as mentioned above in this thread 4. 'High' temperatures do NOT immediately kill your CPU. Mine has been under the above mentioned temperatures for a whole year and it's still ticking away just fine. CPUs don't MELT, they're made out of silicon!
  2. That's right, I didn't include the option for 'both' because the idea is to extract the knowledge about which one is more important to people! If we presume that ED is reading this forum (I don't know if they are) this will then give them an idea about which option is more close to the wallets of their customer base - that's as close as it comes to free marketing research for ED!
  3. Right. Reading the other thread about how people are pissed off by low fps and the claim about ED not being motivated to improve the code because it doesn't bring economic gains, I though it would be interesting to know if there actually is an economic motivator for ED to improve fps - in other words, how many would be willing to pay for that compared to something that ED has already judged worth doing in economic terms (BS).
  4. There was a post about FC not being optimized enough and that perhaps BS would not be a hit product because of its hardware (CPU) requirements. So, to satisfy curiosity and perhaps as a message to ED, how many would be willing to pay for a fps-increasing patch rather than BS? In this patch, code would be optimized to provide a concrete speed-up in game play, perhaps even incorporate multiple core support in some way. Personally, I'd pay several tens of €s for a smoother game - I'd prefer this product over BS!
  5. Got it! Yes, finally got it! a) there was nothing wrong per se with the NVIDIA driver b) there was, in my opinion, a lot wrong with the user interface of the 'profiles' section of the control panel :) The thing is that when saving a profile, you get to choose things that the profile will include. Basically these are devided between 'driver' options and 'desktop' options. There was some box in the 'desktop' area that resulted in the behaviour I described when checked. The description of the box TOTALLY did not relate to desktop icons so I didn't get it even though I went over it many times. Finally, using trial and error I found the right box to UNcheck! I won't go over it now since probably this is not interesting to anyone that has not come across the problem - if you want to know, I'll post screenshots. P.S. thanks Viper for the comment. When one is locked up in a problem any input helps!
  6. Hi Has anyone yet gone so far as to put every service on one core, using procaff, to leave LOMAC a clean run on the other core? I was about to do exactly this by editing registry entries at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services but then got cold feet and decided to ask if anyone had done this already ;) Would it be possible to restrain windows services to the other core by just copy-pasting the C:\WINDOWS\procaff 1 [service path] to the beginning of the service's path in registry...? The ideal being that there are practically no other threads running on LOMAC's core :)
  7. thanks for the reply! I tried 'auto-arrange' but this does not preserve my own desktop icon order! Actually, it arranges them according to a rule: -name -size -type -modified None of these rules produces my order of icons, which is to have games in one row, general applications in another and so on... The reason I think it IS driver related is that if I change resolution 'manually' from the nvidia control panel, the icons do not change order. But as I select my other profile (which effectively changes resolution and enables clone mode for my flat screen tv), the icons are messed up!
  8. Hi! After being a loyal ati customer, I finally changed over to nvidia to optimize LOMAC performance! I was looking for a 300€ video card to run LOMAC and ended up with the 7950GT. LOMAC performance is great, but... I have a couple of profiles set up in windows for the forceware drivers: one for playing LOMAC (1600x1200 single screen) and another for using my flat-screen TV (1380x768 clone mode). The problem is, whenever I change between these two profiles (nView profiles), desktop icons get re-arranged!!!! Anyone come across this issue? I'm using the latest 91.47 drivers. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
