  1. Jet trainer is coming and it will be excellent intermediate airplane for introduction to military combat flying. What we really need is DCS small prop module (Cessna 172 or similar) for basic flight lessons and newcomer introduction to flying and instrument navigation. With these two and reworked training aspect of DCS, we could happily stop recommending FSX to confused new pilots. :)
  2. The only important thing at the moment is that MiG21bis finally get released and that module live up to expectations of the community. That would be great news, indeed! The rest is the internal thing and personal matter of the team members.
  3. More than 20 kts tail wind approach, mountainous terrain ... looking for big trouble. Unfortunately they've found it :( Should have diverted to the nearest safe airport ... if they had been able to - we don't know the reason why they have attempted landing in that circumstances.
  4. After newest updater update, offline issue is fixed. Thank you ED, for very quick response. You guys rock!
  5. There is no such a thing as "future proof" in computer industry. Basically, it's obsolete right after announcement and promotion. i7 is overkill for pure gaming/home rig. There are hundreds of comparative reviews which back this statement up. However, if the rig will see some video/3d/photo content editing/management use, i7 is much better and faster solution. For example: http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1061&page=14
  6. Manual is excellent. It's what MANUAL is all about: reference. No less, no more. Included training material is lacking though. You cannot train new virtual A10c pilot with couple of hours training. What we need (sooner or later you have to study all of this anyway if you want to enjoy DCS): 1) Basic AFM prop aircraft training (flight basics, VFR/IFR procedures) 2) Basic AFM Jet aircraft training (basic combat flight maneuvers, formation flying, etc ...) 3) A-10C detailed systems and combat training. A-10C is serious simulator. You don't jump straight in combat aircraft in RL. You need years of training to do that. Otherwise it's confusing as hell, and it would probably result in catastrophic accidents and death in RL. So, the recipe for confusion is learning the basics first. It takes time. Let's be honest with newcomers. And that's where the biggest obstacle is - you have to love this to be able to educate yourself. There is no way around this, and no amount of support for someone who don't want to be buried in charts, books and training videos for hours, days and months will compensate for lack of dedication.
  7. Forgot about them! Actually, they could be very, very serious competitor in year or two ...
  8. Known issue http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=119677 Workaround for offline play: start directly via launcher.exe "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\Launcher.exe" Updater has some network issues. P.S. MODS, merge the threads, please!
  9. Compatibility is not that huge an issue anymore. Basically it's Nvidia VS AMD. On the PC platform it will be Mantle low level API VS whatever NVidia come up with (DX will die if MS don't take an action soon because it's slow, inefficient and dated). Consoles are low level API too (AMD), and Steam OS will be NVIdia API. So in a sense, even the consoles don't talk to hardware directly (you have low level API for that) - you don't fill and read GPU registers/memory or whatever with machine/C language routines like real direct HW programming ages ago.
  10. UPDATE: After some troubleshooting, I finally managed to find the reason for slow start (while online) issue. I've disabled Microsoft Virtual WiFi Adapter (link on how to this here) Now everything is quick and fast again while online, however when offline the problem is still there - DCS doesn't start at all (it's possible only via launcher.exe). Updater is definitely having some network issues on Win 7 - everything was extremely smooth in 1.2.6 and earlier on the same machine.
  11. The same behavior is manifested while trying to download training videos. Basically, every time that updater is needed, it's very slow to check for updates. The same 1.8Mb "Downloading version info ..." file is downloaded again before wanted download starts. It is strange that updater is now checking for updates every time when DCS is started via desktop shortcut (and is very, very sluggish in doing so), earlier it was once in 24 hrs ...
  12. Me too - never had any issues running Microsoft Security Essentials
  13. Steam distribution. We have to prepare for more post like this when FC3 hits the Steam, although it's way easier than A10C. I'm somewhere between two dominating opinions in this thread. Although it's harsh to say to someone: "dude, it's better to quit", sometimes it is reality and right thing to say. Been in the music industry for too long and I wish that more people realised that for their own sake. You need Simon Cowell cruelty from time to time ... Anyway, gaming (simming) is supposed to be FUN, and first sign that it is time to reconsider what you are doing is when fun part is gone.. OP is obviously not having fun and feels pressured to learn the complex system in a10c. It's fair to assume that this form of fun is not for him, if he's honest about it.
  14. 1.8 MB file was "Downloading version info ..."
  15. And what about this? http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=119677
  16. [sOLVED] While the computer is offline, "Checking for updates..." popup is displayed, and nothing happens. It just hang there untill I cancel it. Basically it won't start offline via the updater. And when I switch the internet connection on again, the same popup is displayed for about 12 seconds, before DCS finaly start. It starts perfectly directly via Launcher.exe, regardless of network connection status. Reinstalled DCS and all the modules (1.2.7 clean install from the website, I've deleted everything from Program Files/Eagle Dynamics folder before installation) - it is the same. The DCS itself runs fine, when it manages to start. Also while reinstalling the modules I've noticed that it checks for updates for unusual long amount of time and constantly downloading the same 1.8 MB file before each module download starts. My connection is stable 10 mbits one. P.S. No 3rd party antivirus or firewall (Microsoft Security Essentials and Firewall only in the background - it's the same regardless of the operational status - on or off). EDIT: please move the thread to Bugs and Problems section. Sorry!
  17. NVidia enthusiasm about Steam OS tells me that this may well be the case. And that could be the answer to the AMD Mantle in a way (I don't think that they'll entirely throw away Windows performance, though)
  18. Actually a logical and expected question if you take your distribution to the mainstream global service like Steam. You have to play by their rules and by expectations of Steam community ... and that, somehow, is not in tune with how we do things in DCS ATM ... :D
  19. I guess they are waiting for a Steam OS which is underway. It makes sense to promote Steam OS as a platform for serious VR. You basically always want to avoid Microsoft ... if you can survive the move ...

  21. Steam OS could be the next big thing. The best of both worlds. It should bridge PC and console gaming. Basically we should get tailored and gaming optimized OS running on PC which could be upgraded easily. So we will get better performance from hardware (nvidia is Valve main partner in Steam OS project, BTW). Windows is basically office and business optimized environment. And Microsoft is very inert lately in keeping the DX and whole gaming side of Windows up to the newest hardware standards (hint: AMD mantle, nVidia collaboration with Valve). Back to topic ... Do we need DCS port for current consoles? No.
