  1. Alright I am familiar with the mistakes of Viet Nam (consider the missiles during that era with missiles today), however... at some point technology can make ANYTHING obsolete..

We don't use telegraphs anymore.. the telephone replaced that. I just don't see an F-22 or JSF encountering anymore trouble than a push of a button can solve. Another example, sure it's possible that there is a power outage, or there is a solar eclipse, or you are stranded on a desert island, or you have been teleported back in time.... but I do not see the need to use ink and a feather to write again.. I dunno maybe it's just me, or maybe the pen and pencils have made that obsolete.

Now if you can give me a REALISTIC scenario where modern aircraft of two opposing nations of equal mitary power will ever see a dogfight again.. then I'm all ears...

  2. Given the technological disparity between the United States and the rest of the world, and the nature of our relations with other countires and diplomacy, along with the technological advances in long range weaponry, I was just wondering.. do any of you think that there will ever be another dogfight in the skies again? If so, perhaps you can provide an imaginary scenario as well?

  3. After completing the first mission of the Mig29s campaign which involves destroying an Su34 (static object), the second mission appears. However, if I save the game, exit, and then return to the same campaign, it automatically resets and I have to do the first mission again. I do not get this problem with the other campaigns I've tried. Is this a bug and is there a solution for this problem?

  4. hmm not many responses... but from testing I can say I've noticed an overall slight decrease in stuttering by changing the precaching to 200,000 for terrain and 25,000 for objects in the graphics config file. I'll probbably keepit at those settings as there should still be plenty of RAM left. The game still stutters a bit right when I enter the cockpit for the 1st time and start looking around and also when there are explosion effects in water (1st time). Not sure if any amount of RAM will get rid of all stuttering.

  5. A good subwoofer is nice but there is definitely more sensory feedback with the buttkicker. I think this device increases the immersion factor significantly (that is just my opinion). IN terms of peripherals for lockon, I would have to ranks as follows...

    1) CH fighterstick + throttle

    2) Track IR with vector expansion

    3) Buttkicker Gamer

Was thinking about getting the CH rudder pedals, but I don't really feel that rudder control is a necessity in jet sims.

  6. Buttkicker Gamer!

Just got it today, I must say that I am most pleased with the way it works. Even though it may not be entirely realistic, it's reeal nice feeling the missiles come off the rails and the GAU8A gun on the A10 really shakes things up. Been testing it out for a bit and I was literally jolted when some AAA hit the back of my Warthog. it packs quite a punch this thing does!

I do have one question though, how much of a sensation do actual pilots feel when they hit the afterburners? I can keep it minimal by using the cockpit afterburner wav file from zzzspace's sound mod, or I can beef it up with the the aftterburner sound file from some other mods... so far I like the original cockpitafterburner sound the best...

  7. There was another mod by Greb from waay back that allows for the mirrors in the cockpit with no reflection, and thus no fps loss; had no luck finding it online (and it wouldn't work with the newer versions of lock-on anyways so there's no point in getting it). I'd love to see a more updated version of that mod though.

  8. OK is it just me, or does anybody else experience some stuttering immediately after entering a mission? I'm assuming this is from the game having to load all the textures. Once all the textures are loaded the game runs smoothly (what I usually do upon entering the cockpit is zoom my view all the way back and look around in all directions to load the textures beforeI press "S" to start the game. I've got 1 gig of RAM and I'm using some high resolution skins, though I get this problem even with low rez skins. This isn't a major issue with me, since as stated before, the game runs smoothly after i look around initially. Anyways, I was windering who else experienced this and whether my memory might be too slow (I've got 2 sticks of PC3200 DDR SDRAM running at 200 Mhz and 512 MB each)?

  9. hey there snomhf...

As GGTharos stated, the TDC does not tilt the radar up or down at all. The upper and lower altitude readings (on the left of the radar dispplay)expand when you try to search for a target further away because the radar beam must cover a broader area as it searches further away (since it spreads out). For example, let's say that the cursor is in the middle of the display and the radar is set to 20 nm. If you get a reading of 20 over 7 altitude, it means that at 10 miles, the radar is scanning the altitudes of 7,000 to 20,000 feet. Now you will notice that when you move the cursr towards the top of the radar, the altitude coverage will expand. If you move the cursor to the top quarter of the scope lets say, and you see the numbers 30 over 0 altitude, it means that at 15miles, the radar is scanning the altitudes of 0 to 30,000 ft.

You can tilit the radar up and down independent of the radar cursor, however, as GG stated. Just use the shift : and the shift . keys. Hope this clears things up!

  10. Does anybody know why the missile begins that crazy looping movement after launch? Was it purposely designed to function as thus, and wouldn't a straighter flight path to the target be more energy efficient? I don't know a whole lot about physics, but it seems that a straight line to the target is the best one. Anyways, I'm just curious about it - the missile is quite effective at what it does regardless.

  11. I am not a programmer or game designer nor will i pretend to be.. but the current track system is just too cumbersome and faulty the way it is. Wouldn't it be a lot easier if the tracks were recorded and played like movies using a video format? That way, they could still be played no matter what changes to the game are made. Anyways, I think this should be an issue to be adressed with v. 1.2 Black Shark (which will inevitably have some bugs to be fixed in a hotfix), or we will constantly have training tracks that don't work.

  12. To understand why you can't do that, you need to understand how the track system works.

A track does not record the aircraft's position in 3D space - it records a small number of inputs and events and makes the game engine reconstruct them.

This works fine, allows for small recorded flights (compared to, say, avi files . . . which are huge), and on the same version of Lomac is fine.

If you change the game engine, even slightly . . . . then the same inputs do not result in the track playing back the same way.

It's not fixable without spending some serious time doing so - I'm not even sure if anyone's suggested a way to do it.

It sucks that they don't have time to record the tracks themselves, but IMO I'd rather ED spent their time introducing new features. The tracks work with v1.1 and they provide a rollback utility - that is more than we've ever had with any ED patch to a sim.

And if they're working on a new patch again, which will break the tracks again . . . . . why re-record for v1.11 when you need to do it all over again for v1.12?

What ideally needs to be done is a number of generous-minded and competent community members and a download site to band together and create voiceover packs for the new patches. If one community member good at one thing re-records the original tracks with voiceover and emails them in, in a week or so you have a new, voiceover, training pack.

    Job done.

VVS504, S77th and the 169th would seem the right places to start asking for competent training officers.

Very well stated (I understand better how the tracks work now)... and yes, I too, would like ED to focus on bigger bugs and bigger issues.

  13. This isnt in the current 1.12 list, there arent any major addons in this patch.

The patch is to fix a few more of the bugs that have reared their head after lenghty testing, oh and maybe a.......no....i shouldnt say i might get in trouble ;)

hmm what could that "maybe a... no... i shouldn't say" possibly be?

As long as I don't see my mavericks being shot down by hand held IR launchers on the ground  I should be cool with it...
