The FLIR (both Lantirn and ATFLIR on F18 and Lantirn on F16) does not pick up a visual of trains (self-created ones) until you are at a range of approx. 11NM - I have tried this in SP and MP, adding waypoints, turning Civ traffic on/off, max preload range, etc...always the same result.
However, although not visible, it is possible to "lock" the train with the FLIR (I predicted via F10 when the train would pass at a certain point and kept pushing TMS up until I locked something) - so, the system detects a signature, but the image of the train is not on screen before 11NM (in all modes: TV, WHOT, BHOT). This is very clear in uploaded video.
