Well, they explicitly said they're not doing anything of that sort. They also explicitly said no modern Russian fighters from out of them. So, I would say that something that was never mentioned at all is a better shot. The priority must, therefore, be to finish the ATC system (first carrier and then...

They should have some control over how it looks. If they need to rip the damn thing apart to make it look decent, they should. Right now it's hideous.

Yes, indeed. They curbed the waste of horizontal space, but vertical is still bad. And most egregiously, no thread page numbers next to the title. Really? Honestly, I hope this gets sorted out. I want the tight, contrasty old design back.

I knew it'll be a trainwreck ever since they announced...

Well, TACAN will allow everyone with a receiver to home in on you, if they know the channel (although fighter to fighter only gives distance, so it'd be coarse). For others, EMCON would matter if there were other signals intelligence assets modeled. Tactical aircraft can't even detect another plane's...

That's why I talk so much about GCI and AWACS overhaul being a necessity regardless of the MiG-29. Indeed, it would be useful even in WWII, Chain Home was an early example, and the entire Battle of Britain was a triumph of GCI against German bombers of the era. The Channel is perfectly suited for that....

  • It's a bug. It shows a WWII-era HF channel that's no longer used very much. Some planes IRL can talk on HF for extremely long range comms, but the A-10C isn't one of them, and I don't think any of the modern fighters we have has a HF radio.

#2 is pretty much what the F-10 map is about. You can have it now, with the right setting. And I agree, GCI is crap, and AWACS isn't much better. This needs a serious overhaul, AWACS should operate much like an air-to-air JTAC, and require a check-in for fighters. We could also use a JSTARS implementation....

  • Yes, I'd love that, too. I was wondering why BalticDragon didn't use presets in his campaigns. Loaded up the A-10 in ME... well, that's why. Other planes have it, why not A-10? It's much more convenient and realistic than manually tuning these things.

It's still awful, but it started out worse. There are still many issues, the board list looks horrible, there's no easy way to skip to the last page of a thread, and I'm getting this annoying "flicker" when the window can't decide how many lines it should have. If they can get us the old layout...

Those two are closer, though, since both are interceptors. F-4E has a better radar and is bigger, MiG-21 is nimbler in a turning fight. This is a running theme with Western vs. Soviet designs since the Soviet Union was a thing. The latter tend to end up smaller, cheaper and often actually better in...

If that were the case, the B-52 would be roughly equivalent in A/G to the MiG-29. Or inferior, since MiG-29 has rockets and B-52 doesn't. Seriously, though, payload capacity is a big deal in A/G, and LGBs are a huge advantage. F-14B is a proper multirole aircraft, MiG-29 is a fighter.

MiG-29 is by no means comparable to the F-14. The former is a lightweight, land-based, short range defensive fighter focused on IR missiles, while the latter is a heavy, carrier-based interceptor with swing wings, an incredibly powerful BVR radar, long range missiles and significant A/G capabilities....

  • English ATC comms are bad. They use the same protocol as the Russian ones, which might be more correct for them. Now, I don't actually know all that much about about how Russian ATC works, but it sounds consistent with other Russian terminology I've heard, and ED mentioned, when talking about the rework,...

I do hope this is the temporary default and not the final design. No mobile-style giant icons, but it still wastes 1/3rd of my screen. Really, simmers tend to own widescreen monitors, often multiple ones. What's that 4:3 compatible crap for? And no, it doesn't look good on a laptop, either.

  • Except it also affects the diffuse maps, which should stay 4K. There's no separate setting for normal maps, which are the ones that need changing. It also wouldn't affect the size on disk. Depending on how it's implemented, it could also not affect memory use, either, just the rendering itself.

It wouldn't have to be "intelligent" as in, fully capable of replacing a human in this role. To fully simulate the way Soviets flew their MiGs, you'd need a human controller. However, it could make it execute at least the basic tactics in a dynamic way (for dynamic campaign and MP), and have...

Secrecy might be big on that one, though. Remember, it hauled nukes. And unlike with the Viper or Hornet, it was its primary mission. It's quite possible that it has at least some systems which remain classified.

  • ED is planning a rework of land ATC to match Supercarrier comms in realism. How long it'll take, I don't know, but hopefully calling ADF will be more useful then.

Well, it mostly hauled nukes, so it'd not be terribly likely or useful in a sim, either. It looks great, but it had a short service life and wasn't well suited for anything but a full-blown nuclear war. As an RC model, it'd be trouble, too, complex shape and unforgiving aerodynamics would make it expensive...

This is only an argument for developing a proper GCI system, and if ED made a MiG-29A, they'd pretty much have to make it, complete with Lazur, which would also benefit both the other MiGs that we have. Seeing as Razbam is currently working on the MiG-23, it would be good if ED looked into that....
