Triple Screen, CPU or GPU upgrade, what does make sense?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have something I´m asking myself since a long time. Actually I´m using a triple screen setup wit 3x 27” WQHD, respectively a total resolution of 7680 x 1440 (plus the exported MFCDs which have no impact on FPS) . I´m running the hardware displayed in my sig (i7 4790K + GTX 1080Ti) and am getting reasonably good FPS (between 45-85, dependend on the situation, settings attached). Higher is always better.

I read in a PC magazine that at high resolutions the CPU doesn’t matter that much, but also read DCS is very CPU hungry. My GPU is utilized at 98% and the RAM is completely filled when running DCS.

I wonder if a CPU upgrade would be beneficial for my setup. So I´m asking the triple heads outside for their experience. Does a faster CPU and especially DDR4 RAM improve anything, is it better in frametimes instead of FPS? I´m asking this as the new products out in the market are quite interesting. I only can estimate that upgrading the GPU only would run into limits at one point CPU wise. But when?

Any information into the right direction would be very much appreciated.

Thanks and take care,

Xoxen

Here is a post I made regarding my experience upgrading gpu from 1080ti to 3080 on triple 1440p setup. I'm running an 8700k...so it doesn't compare an upgrade to cpu ... But it sounds like your FPS is not far off my 8700k when I was on a1080ti (which is still a beast of a gpu).

Thanks for the answer. I just see in your thread that I left a post as well :smilewink: But this is a good piece of the puzzle. It could be an indication for me to aim for a GPU and gather more eye candy as the CPU is still capable to feed it.

Hopefully I get some feedback from someone who changed the CPU to underline this.

Hi all,

I just wanted to add information I was able to gather in the meantime. I upgraded my PC from i7 4790K/32 GB DDR3-2400 to Ryzen 7 5800X/64GB DDR4-3600. I should have listend to what MSI Afterburner told me. The GPU was the bottleneck as I was not able to improve my performance at all. In general the perception is slightly smoother and on a server I already broke the 32GB. So it was definitely a good buy. But in regards to FPS it was not benifitial. Maybe this helps others to spend the money into the right thing. I needed to spend money 🙂 and GPUs are actually hard to get. So this was the best I was able to do. Great CPU.

Take care,

Xoxen

You are damned right on this 🙂 You got it immidiately, my wife doesn´t know about my further plans 🙃 Maybe I´m one of the lucky ones to get a AMD card from the shop. At least I can dream about it.

Keep looking.  I finally scored a 3090 for my triple 70" setup.  Much nicer than the 1080ti

  • 2 months later...

I was now able to buy a brand new RX 6800 XT for a slightly higher price. At least it was OK for me as I´m sick of moaning at the miners, watch the crypto market and the GPU prices on a daily basis. I´m eagerly waiting for it to arrive and will share the outcome.

Edit: The card has arrived and it is fast in Benchmarks. But in DCS it is not that much of an overkill like I had expected. From a 1080Ti to this one is less than expected. Actually I see appr. 10% benefit. I´m actually thinking about my next steps. First of all I need to learn more about the Adrenaline Software etc. before I throw the towel
