It is a very well known problem, and ED neither seems to acknowledge it,

nor has done something about it...

Ultra option in the menu is missing, if you want better quality, change the shadows value to 5.

The menu will then shadows as off, in fact, work on the Ultra.

Maybe you're doing something wrong, because I've been using my modified shadow.lua for a long time now. I have a mixture of medium to ultra setup.

I'd hazard a guess ultra option traces visible in lua file are most likely a leftover from pre-2.2 era. When deferred shading was introduced with its severe performance hit, some GPU heavy options were later removed or disabled, like 8x AA or Ultra Shadows, to get some fps back.

So it's not really an "issue" or something to "fix" from tech. point of view, but developer's choice.

Surprising you would write this... Can you explain me why in the shadows.lua of a fresh install the option ultra is still there? Moreover, editing the shadows.lua as described in this forum and as my attachment, does not cause a performance issue whatsoever, but drawa FAR better shadows in the cockpit......

Nothing surprising for me about leftover/unused lines in various .luas. There are lots of them, especially in aircraft related files. Makes modding a PITA.

About "no performance issue whatsoever" I cannot agree. If you've got that powerful PC good for you then. Not everyone does. I tried your shadowmap size edit and in default P-51 and Spit cold start and takeoff missions and in both cases I lost between 6 and 12 fps in cockpit compared to "high". The biggest drops always when looking forward, where we spend most of our flight time and that's "only" at 1440p. Given the fact that I try to stay above 60 fps in every scenario and that edit caused dips below, I don't consider it acceptable and I'm not surprised 8192 is not available as one of stock value anymore.

Look, guys have been manually editing/modding various luas to extract more rendering distance and textures quality from this old gfx engine if their PC can handle it and that's OK, I use some of Mustang's tweaked files as well, but don't treat highest values as something you're entitled to have as a standard in-game option. Devs removed them for a reason. I suspect, however, they will be brought back though, just like in case of highest AA and AF settings.

Exactly. Obsolete codes are like left over mines. Figuring out which codes actually does anything takes biggest time. And I'd estimate over 25% of the codes are obsolete.
