See trackfile. HARM drops to the ground ~90km from target

I'm used to miles when it comes to navigation be it at sea or air so Ill talk in miles.

OK well HARM doesn't have that much range,

I wouldn't be firing it from more that 40 miles and at least 30k feet high going at speed at least mach 1 to be able to reach its target.

When it comes to radars that you see, HARMs seeker will pick up a radar illuminating it, but that radar can be 200 miles or more away it depends on your altitude,

cause radio waves have infinite range, only reason you cant see them on the other side of the planet earth is cause it is a ball, so the surface is curved, and radio waves travel in a straight line.

The higher you are the range gets longer, while on the ground and with a flat surface, you'll have up to 30 miles range with your radio waves. that's why if you fly low, radars pick you up later.

yeah that's obvious, especially from the trackfile.

Please don't teach me radar-lessons in this thread (Especially because I already know all of that.)

The radio waves do not travel in straight line. They bounce from ground and atmosphere differently depending weather conditions and shapes, they as well can even follow the terrain over the mountains and hills.

This is not modeled in the DCS at all. Maybe one day we get a radio waves reflection and refraction modeled, so proper radio propagation modeling. With the maps getting a curvature as well in them (IIRC there is already support but the map needs to be developed using it).

This would really require two kind methods to solve it effectively.

1) Use audio analysis, like EAX library already allows to do all that effectively and very quickly without much at all performance hit. You virtually play an radio emission as audio, run it through a EAX effects at various surfaces and you analyze the audio effect that is received by a unit and convert it to as radio emission.

2) Use a ray tracing, but need to find a clever way to apply a invisible visual effects on each element that ray would be bouncing. And it is much more heavier in processing and doesn't really give so great result for other than simple radar kind functions where you would need to have the direct line of sight, like run a ray tracing only in a 2x3 degree cone and check what would be painted "with radar". Very rough and ugly but workable.

In DCS the HARM is overpowered weapon, it is just victim of the simple targeting systems in DCS that needs to be improved in the future.

The electronic warfare is currently extremely limited model in DCS. And it really requires very big investment to develop it considerable part of the DCS because so many top modules are 2005+ versions and there the EW is very important part of the combat.

What? The flashing rectangle in HUD means "in range", contrary to the static rectangle. (source is a discord user from the famous "Viper Pit" F-16 discord)

AFAIK, in the HAS mode, flashing FOV Box shows that handoff data was accepted and a missile is ready for launch. There is no range information in the HAS mode.

That is how I understand HAS as well. HAS has no range, only HTS can support you with ranges, as far as I know.

Before you call everything a "bug": RTFM & try again! Thank you. :music_whistling:

The missile has no pre-launch range info in HAS, there is no In Range cue.
