How to change Main Rotor Skin on the Mi-8

    How to change Main Rotor Skin on the Mi-8

    Hello Everyone

    I wonder why parts of the texture are getting recognized while others are not...the yellow cover of the Weapon Pylon was just for testing purposes...DCS is using this part of the Texture file, but completely ignoring others (like the main rotor blades) of exactly the same Texture file...that doesn't make any sense. I don´t get why that is.
    The Tail rotor in example is no issue, works perfectly fine.

    I also I tried setting status to false already, this is what happens when I do so.


    does anyone has an Idea, I've no more anymore.
    I also have extracted the rotor texture liverie description.lua from MV2 and it didnt showed my another file than the one I'm using.

    Been a while since I looked at liveries for the hip, I think there's a couple of rotor or disk texture files that are needed,
    Maybe check out one of Eighball's skins (4 or 5 posts down from this one) he has red & white rotor blades on some his, but you should be able to see which files to edit from those

      Thank you Dingo_Bob, I found the Skinset that you´ve mentioned and downloaded it. I did everything as he did but the result is still the same...except for this...what are these yellow black areas? They look like streched missing Texture parts, but they belong to Texture files that are actually loaded...I dont get this System of Texturing in DCS...

        hmmm, does noone know the reason why the rotorblades wont change its color?

          Hi MemphisBelle,

          Indeed is true that the way DCS handles the texture materials for the Mi-8 might be a bit odd.

          To get custom blades texture you have to add this to your lua file:


          Code:
          {"mi-8_tex_3", 0, "your texture name", false};
          texture name is mi_8_tex_3 by default so just replace it with yours.

          mi-8tex_3 is the name of the material for the rotor blades when they are static.

          If you want to mod also the texture when they are in motion then you have to mod this material like this:

          mi_8_rotors_opa is the texture default name I think.

          For the textures patches that appear in "green" that is the way DCS tells you that does not find the texture, is because you have to edit all the places where numbers go in the lua file and assign them your own texture depending of the place they are:

          Also note that, for what I know, all the pieces of the rotors that join the blades to the main body, sadly, can not be changed with a livery (just the top "cap" and the "wires").

            thats my overall problem.
            I´ve downloaded your SAR Skin and did as same as you did in that one and I still have no colored rotorblades.

            But maybe there´s yet an issue within my description which I simply not see.

                only thing I had to figure out was now how to get the Weaponracks textured properly to make it look like this now:



                you wont believe it, but I had to use the tex_3 texture line twice within the description.lua and the file even twice within Textures AND Liveries

                Do you know by any chance which files I have to editi to change the Cockpit color? The zip file in Bazar/World/textures does not contain any Cockpit Textures apart from the Night Cockpit Textures

                  If you what to change the cockpit I advise you to download any of the "Devrim's Cockpit Mods" for the Mi-8 and do your own modification starting from there.

                      Hi Grajo, Memphis Belle ( fav plane, nice username ! )


                      I'd like to customize rotor discs ( both main and tail rotor ) to look more like what I can see or with a slow shutter camera ( wide blurred main blades and almost disc TR )











                      Do you know which files and how to reach that effect ? Is Photoshop allowing to widen such textures or it would need to be made from scratch ?

                        Hey there Hueyman, great stuff on your Huey open letter, very good read.

                        The Mi-8 textures can be very confusing and illogical if you want to retexture them. Did you check my older messages here in the Thread? A guy called Grajo helped me out. May be our conversation might help you to get your issues solved as well...if not, let me know and I´ll send you my work files for better understanding.

                          Yeah I checked, but will double check ! I understood more about the texture names in the .lua but not really about the modification in the software of the texture itself. Maybe it's more artistic/photoshop related than DCS code handling ?

                          If I remember correcntly, the AI Mi-8, or at least the old AI ( between the time we got the Belsimtek AI very detailed 3D model and the Belsimtek Mi-8 module was out ), the Mi-8 got a nicely blurred rotor texture, much better than the definitive version IMHO

                                Or maybe I’ll have to repair that module, will it delete all joystick and keyboard assignment as well as records, logs and campaigns etc ? Just want to restore vanilla files for rotor texture
