Not even sure I can get away with one upgrade yet but wishful thinking.

If I can just wondering which would serve me better?

Upgrading my GPU from 2080 to 3080 or upgrading my Reverb from G1 to G2?

(Solely looking at DCS experience here).

Would prefer actual reasons why and thoughts, but for those without the time - I created a poll.

I would wait until the higher memory varient of the 3080 is in production... I suspect it will be a better upgrade, and your 2080 will be "fine" for now the O Ly thing wrong with the 2080 is vram, and you will have the same problem with the 3080... Ymmv

Hmm... good point. I saw the other thread here saying that VRAM makes a big difference with DCS. I wonder how long it will be for the 3080 'super' to come out.

The 3090 is selling for almost $3kAUD (which rolls back to being around $2140 in USD. (A lot higher than the $1,499USD quoted on websites elsewhere), so that won't be an option.

How long do you think we'll have to wait to see a larger VRAM 3080? I haven't followed nVidia in the past so aren't sure of what to expect.

And G1 to G2 only makes sense if your IPD doesn´t match the fixed G1 one because the resolution is the same (better sweet spot and colours on the new lenses and panels though). But you are in the need to upgrade GPU to apreciate that, so: First GPU and CPU to match and, then: wait to G3 and skip this generation.

(Or save money 14 months and do the big upgrade on the next generation 5 nm CPUs + GPUs).... I will do that.

Waiting for 3080 with more memory.

Waiting for G2 material/component quality reports.

for clarity i bought a 3090, and i don't think im going to regret that decision, but i had been saving for the 2080ti FTW3 so the price difference was not that big ... (for me)

I agree with the others about the 3080 maybe not giving you much of a performance increase. As for upgrading from a G1 to a G2, there are all kinds of good reasons to do that, but it depends on what you do with VR. I'm upgrading from the G1 to the G2 not only for the mechanical IPD adjustment, but also for the one-piece, longer, lighter cable and the improved hand controllers. I have been playing Half Life: Alyx at half resolution with my old Rift CV1 just because the Oculus Touch controllers were so much better and comfortable to use than the standard WMR controllers that came with the Reverb G1. If the G2s controllers are similar to the Oculus Touch, that's definitely a major factor for me.

If you are upgrading for better visual quality then I would go for the G2, the 2080 is capable enough to run it. If you go for the 3080 then it will not make a difference to the visual quality of the G1. You might be able to up a few settings in DCS but it is still the same headset.

You probably wont be able to get the G2 until December anyway, so it gives you a bit more time to save to get you closer the 3080 down the road mate.

That's just my line of thought, and the way I am probably going to go.

Buy yourself a new car and enjoy your current rig :-)

Your experience will only change marginally with these upgrades. I enjoy my car a lot.

I stick with my 1080Ti & 3600X until 200% performance are available for a reasonable price. No, neither the 3080 or 3090 provide this. I already enjoy 90FPS modest quality/60 FPS high quality in VR. on my 1080Ti. Even a 3090 would not be good for 180 FPS in VR with current CPUs.

A G2 is a very nice headset, but so is the G1. If you don't own a G1, go for a G2, else stay calm.

From what I've seen there is plenty reason to go from a G1 to a G2. Yes the resolution is the same but the lenses on the G2 are supposed to be superior and much clearer. So you should see a clearer image. That in itself is reason enough, but that's not the only reason with the improvements all around the system.

With that said I have a 8K-X on order that is supposed to come in sometime in Oct...I'll be seeing if that is a big enough improvement over my G1 Pro to keep or if I'm going to sell and go G2 because I've been very happy with my G1.

Also, most likely going with a 3090 when I can find one and considering a system update to a 10900K...guess we'll see but I usually update the rig every 2 to 3 years...

lenses for 500 bucks, I pass

It's certainly not for everyone. But if it's clearer it's certainly worth $600 to me. But I'll see how the 8K-X treats me first.

Higher memory variant of the 30xx cards is just a rumor (and also quite unrealistic imho); nevertheless my vote Is for "other": g1 and g2 share resolution, so it's better to change vga, but it's even better to wait for big navi, just to compare and decide.

G1 to G2 should be marginal upgrade. The latest YT videos seems to show better VR experience than most people thought. So I would prioritize GPU upgrade over G1 to G2.

Either way, you're going to wait (for more VRAM NVDA, or Navi/AMD, or for G1 to G2 reviews) so looks like you'll benefit.

One month ago 3080 was rumor too and when I announce it people laughing at me and say it is just a rumor.

When I fly I have no trouble spotting in vr, vid is a pain in the ass, but spotting is fine.

I m doing both upgrades soon or later.

G2 on preorder.

Waiting to see the 20go vram 3080 to get an idea...

Thing is, neither of these upgrade will provide such an amazing boost of performance to what I run at the moment as long as the code is not improved for VR performance...

An optimisation from ED, switch to Vulcan, Support multi threading etc etc will give us way better perfs then hardware upgrades IMO....

Time will tell...
