Yeah !!!

More and more screen glaces/ virtual reality helmet begin to appear, more the time pass, more the resolution become close to HD regular screen and more the price are low for the same quality, i'm sure the future of gaming and simulation (before another revolution who will coming in 10 year max) but also movie its this kind of virtual reality helmet !!!

@Aries, the price its really expensive, when we have a huge price for this kind of helmet you have great chance to have a HOTAS like the Warthog or other advanced capable to make the keyboard useless, same thing for the mouse, i have the Logitech G700 and with HOTAS Warthog and i only need the keyboard for communication menu, every function for DCS its programmed into my 9 buttons, including recentering Track IR, and two thing can be done, change the files for make a clickable radio menu, and the other its to use a vocal command system who can completely replace the full keyboard, tou just have to know where is your joystick or our HOTAS and your mouse and the problem its gone, no more problems from the keyboard, you can even create a simplified simpit (rudder, mouse in a simple box at your right, throttle at a simple box at your left and a simple support for the joystick between your legs or at your right like the F-16.

Simpit + vocal command its just perfect for this virtual reality helmet !

Yup... just crossed over this today... it'll be a blast... but there will still be the "I can't see my keyboard" problem for sims and the like...

the keyboard issue is a real point, thats right, but i think specialy for DCS not a very big one, because you have a full clickable cockpit <3DCS

also you can combined that >PERHAPES< with leapmotion (http://leapmotion.com.

I think thats a great thing for people that dont have the skill/room for a own build flightpit with multi monitor or projector setup.

Also i think the Oculus Rift will have a great future and it would be great if EagleDynamic take a look on it and will give us a lil feedback what they will think about it.

At least that thing is in a early state, the developer kits will be ready in december and he consumer version perhapes Q4 2013 <- but thats only my personal speculations

Hey DCS DEVS... Oculus Rift!

I'm not sure if your up to date on this, but the devs really need to look into devloping DCS to work with the Rift... This HMD is starting an entire new trend in gaming and simulation!

4 days to go if anyone wants a DEV kit...

I 'kicked' in. If nothing else, it will make an interesting item to have twenty years from now, when everyone has them. ;)

We still need to see the keyboard, hotas and mfd buttons. Unless we'd have something like minority report gloves, which could be used for manipulating the cockpit

That gets brought up everytime (well not the HOTAS) but there are potential ways of dealing with that too. I don't expect this to be ready for prime time next week but given time and funding, who knows.

Besides, it has a pretty high 'cool' factor! :D

  • ED Team

My personal view and I do not speak for Eagle on this:

I think this is very interesting, but until I see a means for easily viewing the keyboard hands-free, I am not sure how well this would work with a DCS title that often requires heavy keyboard use.

Well, I'm not sure about the keyboard issue, but if your using a hotas and have a mouse near by, then you could use the rift right now without the need for a keyboard. I rarely use the keyboard when I'm actually flying, mostly only to exit or check frame rates...

Anyhow, I can pass the SDK information and do some testing if this interest DCS.

ED has to

A) first fix this:

B) make sure a device like this will be supported and can trigger the V-Cockpit switches.

ED has to *SNIP*

B) Design a head phone set that has head motion control tech for use with flight simulation

Internal Cockpit views so the pilot enthusiasts will have something really worth buying

my friend.

So basically imagine yourself in a combat flight simulator and have the ability to

to look around the cockpit while freeing up an extra hand for porn.

It may not be ready for DCS, yet, but I also do plenty of flying elsewhere, and in DCS, without using the keyboard.

I couldn't watch a movie on my phone in the middle of the woods ten years ago either.

Wags, and anyone else, is welcome to come by my house after Christmas to play with it. :D

Holy cow Peter, that Leap Motion device is stunning! Shocking accuracy and detail. There's videos out there that show real-time in-house visualizations of the tracking of your hand by a point matrix representation of what the sensor sees... it's unreal. Eyewatering.

ED, you should consider supporting both of these technologies! Heck, if you implement, I'm buying both.

Here.

It's pretty amazing but I would wait for the HD version with better screen resolution. Also It doesn't really seem to offer a wide FOV that I get with 3 screens. Situational awareness is king and I just can't see this replacing a triple head setup. Sldo the keyboard issue for sims is a small hurdle but honestly I'd just stick to teamspeak so I don't have to type and use the VC which I mostly do anyways ( excepting the HOTAS stuff ) so keybard isn't a very big issue.

ED would definately have to consider if implementing this would be worth it . At this point I'd have to say no. There isn't going to be enough people to justify coding it.

It would probably take a few days of code to get the SBS view and make it look right... there is already a lot of flexibility in views now. The immersion compared to triple screen can not compare with 360 head tracking and large 1:1 fov!

Also, the res is not very good now, but they will have better screens next year...

Whats pops up in my head is the quiz if a detachable lower part of the Oculus Rift goggles would be a solution to a setup to use in a pit (when/if support for for the headset in sim is available) ?

i.e to allow to see beneath the 'screen' for panels/keyboard etc. The distance Eye-Displays looks a bit tight though but managable. Could maybe be extended a bit more..

Holding my thick thumbs and hope for the best :-) An integrated VR headset with HighRes at consumer price sounds to good to be true

I wonder if there are going to be any eye strain problems with this like with earlier adaptations of commercial VR solutions. If there are, it could really influence whether or not I decide to purchase this. if I can't see well enough outside of a cockpit in real life because of a sim, then the whole point of a sim becomes pretty paradoxical.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

Instead of a removable lower section, what about an included camera, so a "shown through" view of your hardwired 'pit (or, desktop keyboard) could be defined - go more augmented reality with it. Yeah, I know - but there's no harm in dreaming about it.

hehe. why not. And possible an infrared headmonted cam to eliminate the need for panel backlight as backup-cam :-)

Would bring havoc to the TIR accelerated setup but then again, a 1:1 ratio would be a headtwisting experience. Think about adding a setup like that to a Pit on a moving platform (1-2 DOF would make the day) ?

(Wify would kill me if I forgot to bring the 'brown bag' when 'flying')

Sorry for derailing but as you say, no harm dreaming

According to the guys on the UK PC Gamer Podcast the resolution wasn't really a problem because the pixel density is higher at the center of the display, much like the way our eyes work in real life. They also said the image filled their FOV. They were very impressed, and although using the O.R. didn't seem to be uncomfortable, one fellow almost got sick when he jumped in DOOM 3. Another began swaying until they put a chair against his leg to help his body remain stationary. They also agree that simmers will be the people that will benefit the most from the O.R.

I have pretty much given up on first person shooters because I cant maintain a good posture. It doesnt take long before I start to get sore and I know when I have to stop, after not very long, before I will pay for it with a sore neck.

I do like fps games though and this looks like it could be just the thing for someone like me because I dont have to maintain a position in front of a monitor.

Hopefully the resolution is going to be good. Its just the thing I could see slipping on when games progress so we have some sort of arma like integration with dcs. Otherwise just a bit of arma and team fortress in the mean time :)
