Here's a Co-Pilot to read checklists

Recommended Posts

I think that checklists are important, even after you've mastered the procedure. There's no replacing procedure with attention to detail, though both are important.

I had created some checklists, formatted, reformatted, burned them all.

I finally created an XML for VAC(voice activated commands) that reads the checklist to you on queue, and I'm pretty pleased with it. This profile does not currently perform any keyboard commands. It reads to you, you reply, it reads more.. that's all.

(See threads VAC Blackshark or VAC FC2 for more info on VAC, a vid, and voice to key command profiles I've created)

This is similar to having a Co-Pilot with you, which is pretty nice as you can flip the switch as it's being read to you. This speeds things up dramatically while ensuring all subsystems are prepped properly.

Checklists I've entered so far are:

  • Aircraft Preparation Checklist
  • Aircraft Startup Checklist
  • Pre-Flight Checklist
  • Aircraft Shut-Down Checklist

For instance, you'll hear:

"Pitot heat switch ON"

you say:

"Pitot heat switch ON.. check,"

VAC will listen to you and know the next step... then you'll hear:

"Flaps twenty percent"

you say:

"Flaps twenty percent.. check,"

you'll then hear:

"Strobe light ON"

you say:

"Strobe light ON.. check"

ETC...

The current voice profile is set up pretty close to the checklists in the manual, though I did add a few things that were left out. This will be a work in progress, as I'm sure the checklists will change due to the nature of beta. Later I'll be adding all the radio and wingman calls to the voice profile, as seen in the threads linked above.

Here's a text file with all 131 commands.

Here's the XML file. Just place it in C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\VAC\Profiles. No voice training necessary, it's ready to use.

Please post if you have problems with this profile or suggestions for future changes.

Enjoy.

Oh.. btw.. this isn't a replacement for RTFM! :music_whistling:

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Very good idea  IMO your commands are to long but very good idea! Try to make all the commands (my readback) 3 words as in your post and it’s superb. I will make my lists activate from my current VAC profile and a command go back to it when finished with the checklist. Smart feature StrongHarm! Thanks

How would you do that? Or better yet, do you mind posting the combined profile when done?

There are duplicate commands between lists. They must be made unique. The less words, the more a command is mistaken. The longest phrase takes right at three seconds (hyd press verification), but I compensated by increasing Microsoft Anna's speed by a factor of two.. in the profile setup. I believe this transfers.. if not just go into the profile in VAC Builder, select any item, select 'success phrase', then increase the rate from 0 to 2.

Also, after a period of time, a fella could replace a lot of this with acronyms.

(Fact Check: Did you know that the Chinese have technically inferior innovation because they have no alphabet, and therefore no ability for acronyms or abbreviations. Because of their superior grasp of science, but inferior ability to express it, there are engineers currently caught in abbreviation rifts that are decades long.)

Sure, I'll post be posting updates throughout the lifecycle of DCS. I do like to share. If you create a profile you'd like to combine this with, simply open your profile's XML file and this XML file, then copy everything between

<!--A10C Checklists command Set-->
AND
<!--Voice Activation Command Set-->

from this XML file into your profile's XML file.

VAC commands can load another profile and return you with another command ;)

This is true. It's very versatile. You can activate another profile with a voice command. You can also pause and resume with voice commands. Personally I use CTRL+TAB to turn it on or off, then voice commands 'open channel' and 'close channel' if I want to pause. I use voice activation rather than key activation. You could conceivably say the words 'start my hog' and have it run through every key command for the entire startup sequence from that single voice command. Though, I personally like to interact with the cockpit, so I only use VAC for radio calls and automation of extremely tedious tasks that need to be hands free (like data link in the ABRIS.. see video)

Altered a few call outs and replies to fix cross checklist confusion of logic to replies.

Been using VAC for a long time and it's very accurate for me. I just use it for radio commands. This is the first time that I've tried the voice sounds. The sound is so low I can only hear it if I crank up the speaker volume. I have the volume adjustment to the top but it only shows the sound coming up about 5 % on the scale when the female voice is talking.

I have 5.1 speakers using soundmax. and a headset for microphone.

Any ideas?? Thanks.

You need to go into the config for your stick.. right click configuration... the deselect the optoin for clutch mode.. the stick tdo dtrim is usually clutch homde. But if you disable clutch mode, you can use that mid key as a regular key instead of a clutch. Doo aw ditty ditty dum dittty doo.

Threshor, forgive the incoherent posts. Go into VAC Builder > Load A10C profile > Select 'Success Phrase' button > increase volume on bottom of screen. The increase is global, not just for the one phrase you've entered to edit.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks StrongHarm, that did it.

Do you happen to have a vac profile for the a-10 and have you updated your blackshark profile, I notice you had some longer commands that you were working on with the datalink.

Another thing, isn't there a file you can rename to turn off you own pilots voice. I know that is around this forum somewhere. I'll search.

thanks.

Generally speaking, you wouldn't read the checklist out loud twice during the response in a "Challenge - Response" -checklist.

If the checklist reads (using your example above):

Pitot Heat..................................AS REQ

Flaps 20.....................................VERIFY

Strobe lights....................................ON

In a two man crew you'd hear (something along these lines):

Co-pilot: "Pitot Heat"

Pilot: "On"

Co-pilot: "Flaps 20"

Pilot: "Verified 20"

Co-pilot: "Strobe lights"

Pilot: "On"

You speak truth LawnDart. I did this for two reasons: 1. Aircraft subsystem familiarization (for my own benefit) and 2. You can't have multiple commands that are the same word to trigger a different response. If I had response "On" it would try to trigger a hundred voice commands. They must all be unique.

I've said "verify left hydraulic pressure between 2800 and 3350" so many times, I now know the threshold by heart.
