Turkey for Thanksgiving...?

I think we'll have to settle for pictures. ;)

Even though this was posted on the DCS A10C facebook:

Still a bit optimistic on my part. Still, here are a few "Turkey-ish" Tomcat photos. The Tomcat earned it's "Turkey" nickname mostly from it's appearance when coming aboard the Boat (all manner of control surfaces flapping and big, outstretched wings).

Also, here is a link for a Thanksgiving day article about the Tomcat from last year, it's a fun read (for me at least:) ).

And a few Turkey-ish pictures:

The first picture is ingame screencut? So that means we have a big more progress for now?

and maybe it's still the old fc model in new terrain....

Looking at the small details, I really think it's the old AI model that is currently in DCS (like 95% sure it's the AI model). Doesn't have the refinement of the upcoming DCS Tomcat (even at a distance) - though I could be wrong.

I think we have a while before the Tomcat is really ready (even the first version) - figure late spring or summer 2016 at the earliest. But who knows..... (well a few people do, but they aren't talking ;)).

Well, how about a nice dessert in the form of an article about the rare Iranian F-14s?

With interesting pictures to boot:

It's impressive, keeping OP's article link in mind, how the Iranians managed to keep them flying until now..

You realise the DCS: A-10C facebook page is a fan page right?

Yes, but whoever operates it seems to have insights beyond the average user/forum goer.

Plus, it was a good segue for posting more pictures about Tomcats. ;)

Great pics and article, thank you for posting.

I am amazed that the IRIAF has kept a decent number of Tomcat's airworthy. Quite a testament to their ingenuity since it was one of the most complicated and maintenance intensive warplanes ever built. A LOT of heart and soul has been poured into those Cats!

I wonder how much more time they have left in them?

Wonder if it would be worth it to include an option to enable/disable the cover on the refueling probe if the F-14 is set to Iran.

Iranian_f-14.jpg

for that added realism :D

Frisco1522

The US Navy did this as well for a while after 2001 until most units had transitioned to the Super Hornet. Might not apply to the timeline of this mod, but it would be a nice realism option.

Thanks to all the thread posters for the great "Turkey" material! This was an awsome read, and it has the bonus of the Dackard post on a cool feature! I didn't even know about that practice of removing the cover. The history on this bird is so interesting.

The cover was removed for refueling on the KC135 which has a different basket from the navys baskets...

They used to call the KC-135 basket the "iron maiden", the outer ring of the basket is rigid metal and the refueling door would sometimes contact this outer ring during a refueling attempt. If it contacted hard enough, it would knock off the refueling cover. Conveniently...the line of airflow from the refueling probe leads almost straight into the right engine....so knocking off the door would frequently FOD the engine.

Ingesting fuel fumes into the right engine was also common due to the flow of air off the probe, so it was standard procedure to select the "air source" to the left engine during tanking, otherwise the cockpit starts to smell like jet fuel. The Tomcst had many interesting chsrscteristics, we could talk for hours about this stuff. :)

The cover was removed for refueling on the KC135 which has a different basket from the navys baskets...i thought the Iranian F14s now have fixed refueling probes after they were refit ..they no longer retract

They still retract, F-14s kept their doors on and have been refueling all their lives off of KC-135s, they were removed when the bomber mission came online and refueling off a KC-135 became an every mission task as opposed to occasional training or cross-ocean thing. Just note the F-14 tanked off the KC-135 throughout the majority of its career with the door on. They were removed when OEF and OIF made it too much of a risk to keep them on.
