Some remarks on this mission:

- Units get dynamically spawned using a very interesting algorithm...

- This mission is to combine helicopter pilots with plane pilots. The MI-8 and the UH-1H are underappreciated modules.

- This is a team player mission. The idea is to coordinate your activities with each coalition through teamspeak.

- I've spend hours and hours of time in this mission.

- Wanted to share this mission as maybe others want to run it on their servers also...

Any comments can be posted here...

Thank you.

Sven

ok. I'll do that.I am still improving this mission.

I believe that we should use AI units in our missions. I am so tired of people flying in formation on virtual free flight servers. This is a combat simulator. It is nice to pickup a cargo if you're alone in the air. But can you do it with enemy forces coming up to your side? And how to you coordinate such an event. How do you defend the cargo helicopter from SAMs and AAA as a joint team. That is what this mission is about. It is also about defending the helicopters deploying your units, while doing offense to the other side.

Working now on new scripting routines to get rid of all these triggers to deploy and pickup infantry from client and AI units (i am not copying anybody elses script, rather developing this on my own. It is a hobby).

The advantage of these routines is that it will allow for more helicopter units (clients and AI) to pickup cargo and deploy units within the battle field.

Give it some more time and by iteratively testing/reworking the faults, this mission will be great.

Also, find another mission on the forums:

New version of the mission "Gori Valley"

Hi all,

Just wanted to share this mission before my business trip starting tomorrow.

Take a look at the first post of this thread. I've changed the version of the mission and the description of the mission "Gori Valley".

Just know that this misson is not finished. More work is required on the mission orchestration, but it starts to look now like a real mission and is fun to play...

Eye candy without performance loss. I've had lots of problems with lagging, but got these resolved now by ditching some useless units.

If you like to fly helicopters or like multi-player combat, this mission is for you!

Some additional comments on this mission:

  • Units get dynamically spawned using a very interesting algorithm...

  • I've started to create a framework in lua to orchestrate mission objectives and messaging... Too much to explain now, will make a structured post later about this. Just want to let you know that this framework uses object oriented programming techniques, which allows for quick scripting without much risk to interference...

  • Want to ditch 'mist', as it absorbs performance power... This is in progress... Tables however, are useful, but other code is sadly to say unstructured in mist and a lot of overhead is created using mist for this mission ...

  • This mission is to combine helicopter pilots with plane pilots. The MI-8 helicopter is an underappreciated module. Learn it and you'll love it!

  • This is a team player mission. The idea is to coordinate your activities with each coalition through teamspeak.

  • This mission is in progress, and few other elements will be added. Next version will focus on the cosmetics and look and feel, ... and stability ...

  • I've spend hours and hours of time in this mission.

  • Wanted to share this mission as maybe others want to run it on their servers also...

To those who joined the server on a regular bases last week: we've been playing together on this mission for about a week now on the DCS Belgium Server. The DCS Belgium Server will be down now for the next couple of days, because i won't be home. However, feel free to host this mission on one of your servers.

I would like to thank you for your patience however and your kindness sharing ideas and thoughts on this mission, as we were discussing on teamspeak.

kind regards,

Sven

Looks cool and like a lot of work went into it. Glad to see a mission really take advantage of dynamically spawned AI.

I'd be interested to know how much performance impact it had on your mission to see where optimizations could be made. Admittedly it does have a lot of overhead because it isn't focused on any one thing. I suppose it might be helpful to make a version that is split up into multiple different files so users can choose want they want ala-carte, because mist has grown considerably since its first release. Keep in mind though that you are free to remove the functions you don't need from it if you wish. See the first post on the mist thread :)

Usage Rights

Feel free to modify or redistribute Mist in any way you see fit (even including it in paid content is OK by us), AS LONG AS you don’t try claim that our work is your own.

I look forward to see what you do with this mission.

No installation text/hint found.

Where to put all the lua-scripts?

In the mission folder?

You can download the mission file in the first post of this thread. It is attached in the mission. The .miz file.

You can open this file like any other mission to play. You can also open it in single player and select one client.

I should have also uploaded it on the digital combat simulator web site, but need more time to sort that out.

Hi Grimes,

Thanks for the appreciation and your feedback.

I don't want to start here in this post a long discussion on mist. However, we can in the mist thread. I am happy to share and discuss the ideas there.

Just want to let know here that my text was a bit blunt... I will remove or rephrase it. There are a lot of useful functions in mist that have hardly any performance impact. You've put a lot of work in mist, so did speed.

Handling files is a real hustle in the mission editor. Every time you change a file, you need to reload these files back into the mission editor before testing it...

It would be good to see some "refresh files" button or function in the DCS world mission editor...

Check the code inside the mission. For the framework, I've added multiple files for the different base classes. I've nicely kept mist as a separate file, but renamed it to a _Sven version because it contains bug fixes and improvements while using your developments.

Maybe run a diff on your version and see what improvements were made, f.e.:

- on the messaging, removed bugs and added the counting timer function.

- a decent error message now given when a scheduled function goes into error... (In the log).

- bug fixes on the event handler that checks the birth and destroy events...

- ...

The (manageable) performance impact of mist is on the event handlers that catch the birth and destroy events etc to keep these tables up to date: you don't want loops there... I've stopped using dynAdd and wrote my own system (set of functions) to spawn units. Not going into details here, but will in the mist thread, if that is okay for you.

Sv.

When hosting this mission, make sure 3D render is off. Never put server in map F10 mode. Best is to let it run in F12 mode, and it should report a framerate of 10 to 30 or higher. Your screen should be blank.

Otherwise the server will generate lag. Amazing that this problem is still there, I know. .. without a decent solution from dcs either limiting lag or explaining why there is lag at all.

2014.08.20.100 - DCSW 1.2.10

New version uploaded. Download from first post within the thread.

Further efforts trying to reduce lag. Also fixed some cosmetics.

I've noticed recently that when boarding an MI-8 you get routing messages only when somebody else has not boarded the ''twin"' MI-8 also...

I need to look into this matter and provide a fix.

Mission looks interesting, and I'd be interested in trying it tonight. I have a question, though:

You mention random AI spawns, yet you have red and blue objectives. Is this strictly a force on force mission where you need both red and blue players, or can this be flown as co-op from either side?

When you fly on one coalition only, the mission orchestration will add more frequently units on the other coalition, depending how much players are online.

Attempted the mission this evening. We really liked the dynamic messages with the copilot providing navigation in the Huey. However, with all of the objects we couldn't get decent frame rates at all. Three of us were running i5 and i7 processors with minimum GTX 660 graphics cards (one of us has a 780), and everybody had sub-10 frame rates (I had 5-10fps in the Huey and 2-7fps in the Ka-50). With all of the objects in the mission, I just wonder how much of this will be fixed with EDGE and how much is the mist overhead you described.

Thanks again for a great mission. Hopefully future improvements (either EDGE or mist) will make it playable for us. We really liked what we saw, that's for sure!
