Heli
Kent Optronics Inc.,* Hopewell Junction, New York, is being awarded a $47,600,000 Small Business Innovation Research Phase III, firm-fixed-price, basic ordering agreement for wide field-of-view night vision systems, retrofits, and data. The wide field-of-view night vision system uses optical foveal design that features an 80 degree field-of-view without compromising optical resolution or size, weight, and power consumption. The night vision systems will be used by Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, U.S. Special Operations Command, Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy users. Work will be performed in Hopewell Junction, New York, and is expected to be completed by May 2021. No funds will be obligated at time of award. This contract was not competitively procured in accordance with statutory authority 10 U.S. Code 2304©(5) authorized or required by statue (15 U.S.C. 638®). The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, Indiana, is the contracting activity (N00164-16-G-JQ15). http://www.defense.gov/News/Contracts/Contract-View/Article/754040 The WFOV F-NVG, or wide field-of-view foveal-night vision goggle, is developed based on KOI’s proprietary optical foveal design and feature an outstanding, 80 degrees field of view (FOV) without compromising optical resolution or size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP). This increased FOV, along with high on-axis resolution, is attained through the use of a wide angle foveal eyepiece and objective lens without any weight penalty. These night vision goggles work with all Gen III image intensifier tubes. The WFOV F-NVG series cover both binocular and monocular. The binocular version is a retrofit of the standard AN/PVS-15, while the monocular is a retrofit of the AN/PVS-14/-18. The limited 40° FOV of standard AN/PVS-14/-18/-15 NVGs restricts off-axis detection, thus hindering the peripheral vision of the user. They require aggressive head scanning to maintain minimal situational awareness, resulting in user's neck strain, disorientation, fatigue and sometimes mishape and life threating. Our WFOV F-NVG series solved these problems. As compared to the most recent state-of-the-art Panoramic Night Vision Goggle (PNVG), with a rectangular FOV of 40° x 97° brought by four (4) optical channels, the WFOV F-NVG’s circular 80° FOV in each single optical channel offers a much larger area of awareness and observation – true, 2-dimensional coverage in a much lighter and more compact package. http://www.kentoptronics.com/nvg.html Edited May 7, 2016 by Heli

Heli
US Army light infantry units are to be equipped with the Saab 84 mm Carl Gustaf M3 Multirole Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System (MAAWS) as a standard issue tactical support weapon, following completion of a Conditional Materiel Release (CMR) authorisation by the army in late 2015. In parallel, the army continues planning and tasking efforts to achieve Full Material Release (FMR) to the service in late 2016. With the CMR complete, the M3 is now officially an organic weapon system within each army combat platoon, and will initially be fielded within selected Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs), which will now train, maintain, and sustain the M3 as part of the IBCT organisational structure. Going forward, all brigade combat teams will receive 27 Carl Gustaf launchers, about one per platoon. "The CMR allowed the system to be quickly fielded to operational units before the more exhaustive Type Classification [TC] FMR process is completed. This allows IBCT commanders to train and deploy with the M3 MAAWS, pending finalisation of the TC FMR progress," Jack Seymour, marketing director for Saab North America, told IHS Jane's. Select army active duty and National Guard components have already begun receiving the M3 MAAWS, and beginning this year units equipped with the system will be able to train and qualify on the weapon system in their home bases. The US Army's Standards in Training Commissions (STRAC) allocations, outlined in the DA PAM 350-38, will authorise M3 MAAWS gunners and assistant gunners to qualify and maintain combat proficiency annually with live-fire exercises. Originally, issue of the M3 in US service was restricted to US Special Operations Command (SOCOM); beginning with the Army Rangers in 1989, the US Navy SEALS in 1997, and later the rest of the US Special Operations Forces. http://www.janes.com/article/60331/us-army-approves-carl-gustaf-m3-maaws-for-general-use

Heli
M282 The success of the BAE Systems’ Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) is attracting extensive interest from foreign nations, especially now that the helicopter-borne weapon has demonstrated an early operational capability this year on high-performance fixed-wing tactical jets. Speaking to reporters May 17 at the Sea-Air-Space Exposition in National Harbor, Md., Capt. Al Mousseau, the Navy’s program manager for the APKWS, said that the missile is being sold to five nations — Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Australia and The Netherlands — and there are 19 more cases being processed. “The user base has exploded,” Mousseau said. “The interest out there is incredible.” The combat-proven APKWS is a Hydra 70 2.75-inch rocket with an M66 Mod 4 rocket motor, an Mk152 warhead and an Mk435 fuze with a BAE-built semi-active laser guidance section that screws into the midsection of the rocket assembly. It is guided to the target with a laser designator for a precision hit. The APKWS was deployed on the Marine Corps’ UH-1Y and AH-1W helicopters in 2012 and has since been deployed on AH-1Z, MH-60R and MH-60S helicopters, and demonstrated on the Tiger, OH-58, Bell 407, AH-6M and MQ-8B helicopters, the AT-6 light attack aircraft and the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. The missile has now been deployed on the Marine Corps’ AV-8B and the Air Force’s A-10 and F-16 tactical jets and has been deployed on the jets in Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria. Firing the missile requires only a software change. Being deployed on so many platforms “has huge implications in the international market,” said Dave Harrold, director for precision guidance solutions for BAE Systems, at the briefing. Being able to “hang it on an Air Force F-16 is significant for us in the international market.” Mousseau said that more than 200 APKWS missiles have been fired in combat since its debut with Marine Corps UH-1Ys in 2012. Harrold said the all-up round with APKWS costs about one-third the cost of a Hellfire missile. “The modularity of the APKWS is very exciting,” Mousseau said, noting that different warheads can be used on the missile. The M282 penetrating warhead is being qualified for the missile. http://www.seapowermagazine.org/stories/20160517-apkws.html

A confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the issue suggests that the incident could have been a premeditated act planned by the plane's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah. The document reportedly obtained by New York magazine stated that forensic analysis of the five hard disk drives seized from Shah's home-built flight simulator showed that he had practised the suicide route leading to a remote area in the southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the actual disappearance of the flight.
