Question: JTAC

Hi,

What should be the max range of the JTAC unit from tasking A10C, for the JTAC unit to respond to radio calls?

I mean if the A10C has to be nearby, or can be far off from the JTAC?

Anyone??

I would also like to know why only AM/FM is available in Mission Editor during JTAC unit Set Frequency & not UHF?

UHF is reserved for flights only across DCS. There is no max range but you can record yourself as JTAC and play with audacity, to create the same file with differing level of garble (static), then use these with trigger areas. Then depending on your proximity to that area, you listen to the file needed using scripts.

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

You can use a UHF freq. just type one in. The only difference between UHf and VHF is the frequency itself, both can use AM or FM modulation.

Range will depend heavily on altitude. At medium altitude provided there is no terrain in the way both VHF and UHF can reach a couple of hundred miles. At low altitude it could be less than 10 miles.

It's something of a "how long is a piece of string" type question.

If you ask about the general radio ranges, the higher the frequency used (kHz, MHZ, GHz), the smaller the effective range. Low frequency high wavelength (means kHz) transmissions can travel thousands of miles, while your Bluetooth gadget with a GHz frequency can only reach some tens of yard.

In my experience we always had hogs and or f-18 no further out than a variant range of 20 to 40 miles. Depends on how much air traffic and other taskings going on with other manuever elements. Their really is no defined answer from what i have experienced. But one aspect is the Hogs would be much closer in range and have actual eyes on our OBJ when we where on obj. Its really a complicated matter because usually we would have Gun Teams aka Apaches escort us in to obj then the hogs would usually be on station and hand overs would occur.

Its very fluid and theirs allot more to say but short answer is so many dynamics the number one rule in my mind is if your covering somebody you should have visual on them if the environment permits that.

i also wanted to know this.

i have another question about jtac. i watched some videos about jtac.

in some of these videos, pilot doesn't enter gg codes and mfd says "msg" and he can see where the targets are. in onther videos, pilot enters gg coordinats as a new waypoint.

maybe i understood wrong. can you clarify this jtac assists , which is the easiest way?

Im not a jtac but we always had them with us Tacp. They can send the birds the coords via data link and bird accepts it as a message/tasking, or its a read back and pilot inputs the tasking. Fellas with more knowledge will chime in as their is some Jtac's around these forums.

Most situations of been a part of where the classic call in 9-line and pilot would input and read back. We have marked by smoke and also Ir Laser. You can probaly google this subject and will see many opinions and preferences, cant really comment on which is easier as its all situational dependent.

You can do this all in dcs minus the whole guy on ground sending the tasking to aircraft unless their is a way other than the Ai does it. Which if their is please id like to know

When setting up JTAC in mission editor you can either choose for him to use data link or not. If it's set to on, A-10C pilot will get target location on TAD. If not you have to input target coordinates in CDU.

It's easier with data link, you just hook up target on TAD make it SPI and you are ready to unleash hell.

So does that work for a human controlled jtac in game? Would be awesome if their was

No, that doesn't work with human controlled JTAC ingame. I'm a JTAC for my wing and can and will use the bino's ingame together with the F10 map and, if available, a GRG (Gridded Reference Graphics) map which I make myself, based on intel of the location where I will be performing my JTAC function.

A sample of a GRG map can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdyxauj8akz98bf/Dusheti%20100x100m%20mgrs%20rev2.pdf?dl=0

The map will allow for talk-ons using specific terrain features. We usually train talk-ons from Ingress Point, Hasty Key-hole positions and low-level pop-ups. For the last one we tend to use a smoke marker to get the A10 pilot on-target as quickly as possible.

All-in-all, using unguided munitions and no TGP is a real challenge CAS-wise, both for the pilot and JTAC.
