cichlidfan
That last one really is incredible. I keep thinking back to the moon pics and footage I watched as a kid. How cool would it have been if the quality had been like this? marcos
Looks so much like Earth. Apparently at the lowest points there's supposed to be areas that fall within the triple point of water and water can exist as a liquid there for short periods. Speed
someone please change the thread name (Prove to Probe) No, "Prove" was the correct spelling- the original thread title meant "it will prove its landing method". It used an untested landing method that a lot of people thought was too complex and would never work. Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. Kuky
still doesn't sound like good grammar, shouldn't it then have "curiosity proves landing on mars" or "curiosity proved landing on mars" anyway I see title is changed now I think if they ever start "recruting" normal people to go into space and colonise I think I would want to go :) Edited August 31, 2012 by Kuky No longer active in DCS... 104th_Cobra
This is most probable what in english is called sandstone ("arenito" in portuguese) and coarse sediments. In the most incredible form it can be calcareous, which brings the jaw dropping hypothesis of his organic origin (the chemical origin by precipitation is the least probable hypothesis). This formations are the result of most probable precipitation and runoff erosion in sedimentary terraces. Each terrace is the result of one specific set of conditions, one specific moment in time. This geological formations in Mount Sharp and the geological exploration and cartography of Mars are the main reasons for the landing in this general location. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluvial_terrace 104th Cobra [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Not referring to sediments, but regarding life on mars: recently it has been proven by irradiating meteorites with UV similar to mars atmosphere at mars temps that methane is formed. This is a major blow to the discovery of large amounts of methane in the mars atmosphere one year (?) ago, thought to originate from organisms. Speed
The solar-powered Opportunity rover, which landed nearly nine Earth-years ago, hasn't quit just because it's got a bigger and better sister now. She's found yet another interesting rock scientists would really love to examine in a lab. What the heck are these spherules in this rock? Scientists do not know.
